SYTYCD - Back to Reality

Aaaaaah.  That's better.  Last night's show felt just like slipping into my favorite, comfy heels and cocktail dress.  (What, you thought I'd wear sweats to watch this show?)  Cat was ready for her night at Studio 54.  Mary was loud and obnoxious.  NappyTab were there.  And Nigel was a rude and tasteless moron on a power trip.  And he's still led around by l'il Nigel 99.9% of the time.

Matt and Kourtni went home, just as I predicted.  And Gev and Courtney got their first taste of B3, even though I still maintain that it should've been Jessica and Will.  I'm not gonna claim it, though, because this week I wimped out under the pressure of my streak.  Now, I've got an asterisk next to it bigger than Barry Bonds'.

But enough about me.  What about the show?

After four fabulous group numbers, this week's kid-stravaganza disappointed.  Do y'all think Cabaret and Chicago are the only Broadway shows Tasty has ever seen?  And the somewhat underwhelming choreography wasn't helped at all by the fact that the cameramen are apparently back on the sauce.  Horrible camera angles, weird cuts to dead space or extreme close ups on dancers faces?  Just say no, SYTYCD cameramen.  I expect to be one of the first people that you apologize to when you start your 12 step program.  And while I enjoy Will, putting him at the center of that group number was criminal when you had Mark just sitting there waiting to out-creep Joel Grey.  That two seconds of him jumping out from behind that door was the best two seconds of the piece.

On the bright side, the solos were more solid this week on the whole.  Matt continued to display that gorgeous, pure technique that he has and this week he seemed to have more of an emotional connection to the music and the piece, a sense of joy in dancing.  Maybe knowing that he was going home (because really, who didn't know that it would be him) freed him up to just let go and dance.  Kourtni pulled out another nicely choreographed piece.  I'm going to ignore the hair and the angel wings because it's wrong to speak ill of the dead.  And at the end, Nigel and his pants were overruled and she was sent packing with a nice little grace note to finish up on.

I thought Komfort's solo this week was her best one yet.  She's getting better at using the stage and projecting.  Sadly, friends and fans, it's much too little, too late.  Barring a miraculous Thayne/Comfort performance next week or a complete meltdown by one of the other couples, Komfort and Guy Smiley are definitely on the way out.  At least, Komfort will leave a nice impression.  Thayne's solo was almost as painful as those too tight, acid washed jeans he was wearing.

And my little lovebugs?  Well, Gev brought it last night.  I think that might be my favorite solo by a breaker ever.  It had fun choreography and great tricks.  It looked like he'd really thought about it.  Yay, Gev!  Courtney's solo was a little bit manic.  She fell out of some of those turns and it was right on the edge of the hair flinging, flaily solos I hate.  Hopefully she can pick it up before next week when she and Gev inevitably land in B3 again along with Thayne and Comfort.  I did enjoy how Nigel basically told them from the jump that they weren't going home this week.

So on to the top 12, kiddies, with a spot on the tour on the line.  Nigel says he's looking forward to turning it over to Ameriker and so am I, quite frankly, cause you never know what you bitcas will do.  And this year, the judges have been so predictable, a blind howler monkey baby could tell who's going each week.
