America's Best Dance Crew: Is anyone better than Jabbawokeez

Mario Lopez kicked off the Season 2 premiere of America's Best Dance Crew with bad news: Someone's going home.

Why are we already talking about top and bottom 5s? Why were people voting after only the audition special? This was a werid decision from producer Randy Jackson. Maybe the lack of a results show forces everything to be more compact. But this definately gives Dance Crew the feeling like its going to fly by. Shane Sparks commented on the bottom 2 at the end of the show, saying America needs to pay attention to who they vote for, because neither of these teams deserves to be here. Well yeah, except who's fault is that? We didn't get a chance to really see the top teams show their best, so our only impressions are from the auditions. Next time, save your elimination votes until after everyone dances.

Best Dance Crew is sort of the MTV offspring of So You Think You Can Dance. They take my favorite aspect of that show, hip-hop, and highlight it in full glory. I loved last season (which was only a few months ago). We got to see Break Sk8t, a team that dances only on rollerskates, Kabba Modern, young Asian teens with sick isolation techniques, and Jabbawokeez- the masked masterminds that are probably the best dance crew I've ever seen. They will all be hard to top.

Okay. Down to business. The challenge this week was "Crew's Choice," meaning everyone just gets to showcase their originality and strengths as a team. Let's meet the crews:

SoReal Cru:

They're from Houston, TX and their mantra is "Explosion!" Shane liked them alot better than I did. He's already predicting top 2!

Supreme Soul:

The cockiest team in the competition. They compete regularly against The Jabbawokeez. They're good, but tonight JC Chasez (N*Sync) was right- they didn't use the stage.

Xtreme Dance Force:

Pandering to judge Lil' Mama, they danced to one of her songs. They were superfast, they were sycronized, and they hit everything. I liked them! Shane Sparks said they were "whack!" He hated it! Shows what I know.

A.S.I.I.D:

That guy in the middle there? He's completely deaf. Really. It's amazing what he can do.  The ladies did a cool dog-leash thing that was pretty hot.

Boogie Bots:

I hate the name, but they say it was inspired by shows like Transformers and Voltron, so they can't be all bad. Solid performance.

Super Cr3w:

A-May-zing. They dressed as ninjas. That's 500 points right there. Then they did this "falling tower" thing... Shane declared, "Yall just sh** on everybody!"

Phresh Select:

Some really cool hat tricks. They did an old-school showcase to a Boyz II Men song. Good team, I think they've got potential.

SASS x7:

The all-girl crew that's like a basketball team dance squad. They hate being called that. JC: "If you don't want to be cheerleaders, don't do cheerleader moves." Well, said, my friend. Well said.

Fanny Pak:

So named for the popular 80's  accessory fad. (I remember fanny packs in the early 90's) They are a unique group that JC called "true artists." They gots skillz, but I call them: kinda weird.

THE ELIMINATED:

Distorted X:

Honestly, they were damn good. Neither they nor Fanny Pak should have been up for elimination.  JC praised them for playing up the sexuality. "No one wants to see a beautiful girl succeed," he complained- right before he voted them off the show.

It's fun to see Shane Sparks' little spin off find a life of it's own. How much judging could he really do on Salsa and Interpretive dance anyway? Speaking of judging, N'Sync-er JC Chasez is turning into a very insightful, very picky critic. I'm impressed. Did anyone else even watch this show?

When the season began, I despaired of any crew living up to the standard set by S1 crews Jabbawokeez and Kaba Modern. But I have to say, I think Supercrew has what it takes to be that stand out crew for this season. They have a totally different feel than Jabba and Kaba, but I loved their ninja flavored funk! And there's no crew that I want off my screen as much as I wanted Breaksk8te to go away last season. (Although Sassx7 can go away any time now. They're not even a particularly good dance team! I've seen HS squads who can turn it out better than those girls) Overall, I think we have the makings of a solid second season here.

Sassx7 and distorted X were really my choice for the bottom 2...they were both far more "cheerleader-y" than dance crews for me....DX, sure they were sexy, but technically they fell waaaay short of the other crews...Supercrew is amazing they really did **** away, but right now i'm really into fannypack. they are totally original, they certainly are something no one has seen before and i fear they'll end up in the bottom more often than not because people don't know what to make of them....

I wish the bottom 2 teams would just have a face off and battle each other. Audience cheers would determine who stayed. It would be fresh touch to eliminations, and it would make the "nature" of this particular dance program more authentic.

bring a little bit of that weirdo dance party 360 flavor to it (please tell me i'm not the only one who watched that show!) it clearly would make it more interesting...i like that idea, especially if they had to do something different than the routine they'd just done, make it much more like an MC battle....

Dance Party 360!!! Does that still come on?

Jan122007_915_lg

Dance Party 360 ruled! And it would totally bring that You Got Served/Step Up 2 Tha Streets feel to the show if they made the crews actually battle at the end of the show rather than just do the choreography they'd prepared for that week. Am I on crack or did they do that a couple of times during S1? (Well minuse the audience vote, but I definitely remember a battle - maybe that was only in the audition round)

I liked Fanny Pack a lot better this week than on the audition show. I thought they married their quirky vibe with some real hip hop attitude, whereas during the audtion show, they just looked like a contemporary dance group. I'm still not sure that I like them, though. I think with a little more time, I'll kinda fall for Boogie Bots as well. And ASID proved that they were more than just a sob story, which I was happy about.
