I don't really play alot of games, but I am obsessed with Metal Gear Solid. Like most Metal Gear fans, I have been counting the days until the release of a big screen film based on my favorite franchise. No go yet, but I remain hopeful. Next to the script, the most important thing to making a good adaptation is the casting.

In honor of the newest PS3 game, Metal Gear Solid 4 (which just released on my birthday) I have decided to take a look at the best possible candidates to play the game's hero, Solid Snake, in a Metal Gear film:

THE ORIGINALS



Michael Biehn
Audition Tape: The Terminator
Why? Obviously Snake's original look was modeled after Biehn's likeness.
Why Not? Snake has changed over the years; now they're nothing alike.


Kurt Russell
Audition Tape: Escape from NewYork
Why? He inspired the character. The eye patch, the attitude. Even the name.
Why Not? Russel's a little old now to be starting franchises.



David Hayter
Audition Tape: The Metal Gear Series (VG)
Why? Because he actually IS Snake. Time to put him on the big screen! He's provided that iconic voice for all the games.
Why not? He may not match what the hero needs to be physically.



THE FRANCHISE PLAYERS 


 
Christian Bale
Audition Tape: Rescue Dawn
Why? Because he's a bad-****
Why Not? He's already Batman. 


 
Hugh Jackman
Audition Tape: The X-Men trilogy
Why? He can emody Snake's character in every way.
Why Not? His solo actioner, Van Helsing, sucked.


 
Kiefer Sutherland
Audition Tape: 24 (TV)
Why? as Agent Bower, he basically plays the exact same character. Why Not? Playing the exact same character doesn't always translate- see: The Sentinel


TRY THESE GUYS 


 
Colin Farrell
Audition Tape: S.W.A.T.
Why? He's a really good character actor who doesn't have a franchise yet.
Why Not? He's losing notoriety with the public.


 
Russell Crowe
Audition Tape: Gladiator
Why? He's one of the best/toughest actors working today.
Why Not? Being in a video game movie might seem silly to him


 
Viggo Mortensen
Audition Tape: Eastern Promises
Why? Any dude who can fight off 2 hitman while being naked is hardcore.
Why Not? He's got Lord of the Rings. He's set for life.



OUTSIDE THE BOX



Guy Pearce
Audition Tape: Memento, The Proposition
Why? An excellent Actor talented enough to surprise everyone in the role
Why Not? Is he a big box-office draw?



Eric Bana
Audition Tape: Troy
Why: He buffed up and went toe to toe with Brad Pitt in an amazing fight.
Why Not: Stinkers like Hulk


 
Ryan Reynolds
Audition Tape: Smokin' Aces
Why? Crazy?! I know. But when he's not goofing off, he can be a convincing tough guy.
Why Not? That may not be enough to win my vote.

• Why? Passed over for James Bond, this could be the bounce back actioner he needs.
• Why not? Can he do an American accent?
