Craig Ferguson as host of White House Correspondents dinner

The news this week that late-night's newest Scottish-American-citizen-with-a-late-night-show will be hosting the White House Correspondents dinner in April has already settled into a too-predictable judgment: He'll be better than last year's host, Rich Little (well, duh--my pet turtle would be funnier than Rich Little) but not as edgy as Stephen Colbert was two years ago. You remember that one, CSPAN-addicts: Colbert turned in some great performance-art that managed to poke not just the President but also the entire weasel press corps with a sharp verbal stick. But I think Ferguson may well prove first-rate not because he'll "go after" the President or the press, but because he'll do to the President, the politicos in the audience, and the jaded reporters what he does to TV audiences every week-night: He'll sucker them in with his playful attitude, his slinky hip-moves and his waggling eyebrows, and then slip in a few zingers--they won't know what hit 'em. Remember, Ferguson may come on garrulous and friendly, but he's a wily devil--this former punk-rocker, former drinker, former belligerent stand-up comic is one tough customer underneath all that charm. That's what makes him such a strong, constantly surprising performer. And when you put a guy like that in a political setting, we're bound to witness something special. Agree? Disagree?

Can't wait. Still amazed at what Colbert did two years ago. Nice to have your voice on this new site, Mr. Tucker. You're classing the joint up!

Ken: I saw your pet turtle at club in Boston two years ago -- he absolutely killed!

No fair setting the bar so high, Ken. I may never post a blog here now. And of course Ferguson is going to be awesome. He is the best late-night host hands down and has an amazing way of sneaking in a really good blow in between making with the funny. And I am not saying any of that because I sometimes stay up late just to see him or because I am lulled to sleep by his Scottish brogue almost nightly.
