Live Blog: Saturday Night Live is back!

I'll be live blogging the first new SNL since the Writers Strike. Come along with me, won't you?

11:38 - They just finished the opening sketch. Not so funny. It was about a debate between Hillary and Obama and how much the media loves Obama. Feh, I somehow expected more.

11:39 - Tina Fey is hosting! Yay!

11:40 - Tina's monologue is detailing the deal made by the WGA. It's funny because it's too technical. And she just got whacked with a boom mike. Nice.

11:41 - Cameo by Steve Martin! And he just 'slapped' Tina!

11:44 - OK, the fake commercial about having your period only once a year was pretty funny. Especially the disclaimer.

11:49 - Ooh, a 'Rock of Love' parody. This could be interesting.

11:51 - Oh no, the Amy Pohler character with one leg. This cannot end well.

11:55 - Tina Fey as a clueless blonde is pretty funny. But overall, this entire sketch merely reminds me how much Rock of Love sucks. And also, this sketch is way too long.

11:56 - Digital short! About how some old guy's grandkids get digitally inserted into movies to explain things or warn him about violent/graphic/chaotic scenes. Hmm. Started out funny but got conceptually stale towards the end.

12:02 - A game show called "What's That **** Talking About?" The hell?

12:06 - Apparently, the premise was that Tina Fey can understand women speaking while the male contestant couldn't. Not great, but points for calling the bonus round "Who does that b**** think she is?"

12:09 - Carrie Underwood performs. No comment.

12:16 - Weekend Update is back!

12:18 - Holy crap, Mike Huckabee is on Weekend Update explaining why he hasn't dropped out yet. And this is really funny, as Seth tries to explain how it's a mathematical impossibility for Huckabee to win. Awesome.

12:20 - OK, now they're driving the joke that Huckabee isn't leaving the set into the ground. Whew, they just wrapped that. It's was starting to get annoying.

12:23 - Weekend Update puts Tina Fey at the desk! Nice!

12:27 - Tina just had a great bit about why Hillary is better than Obama. I cannot do it justice by repeating it here, but I can assure you it will be on YouTube in the next 24 hours.

12:30 - A lot of Celebrity Apprentice gags. The impression of Donald Trump is, as always, spot on. And the impression of the crazy money guy and the dancing Six Flags guy weren't terrible. But the rest of the impressions are really bad.

12:38 - Some sketch about a best man's speech. Totally not worth repeating.

12:41 - Some fake commercial about hot air balloon rides. I suspect it's only to cover a costume change.

12:42 - Heh, a joke about Food Network. Unfortunately, it segues into a weak sketch about drinking milkshakes. But you gotta love the giant novelty straw.

12:44 - It appears to be a joke about "There Will Be Blood." But since I haven't seen the film, I'm only guessing.

12:51 - Another Carrie Underwood performance. Another opportunity for me to passively listen while I do something else.

12:58 - I think only Tina Fey could say "Now step aside, I have to suck a family of raccoons out from under a Dunkin Donuts" while holding a giant oversize vacuum and make it sound funny.

1:00 - Aw, Don Pardo just turned 90! And he's been at NBC since 1944!(?) And now he's blowing out a huge cake. It's very sweet.

And that's the end of the SNL return. Frankly, it wasn't all that great. There was no one sketch that made me laugh out loud or tell people about. Some good cameos by Steve Martin, and especially Mike Huckabee. If you only watch one part of this week's episode, watch the Huckabee cameo; it's totally worth it. Otherwise, it's just another relatively mediocre SNL episode.

The only skit I like was the "There Will Be Blood" spoof. Yeah, I feel asleep during the second song.
