Best Picture
Will Win: No Country for Old Men
This has Oscar written all over it. It’s gritty, unusual, fierce and period without being too period. It’s won a collection of awards already, and best of all, Oscar voters tend to consider body of work when voting for a film. Its finally appropriate to consider bringing the indie-minded Coen Brothers into the Hollywood elite.
Should Win: No Country for Old Men, but...
Let me say that Juno was my favorite of the five nominees. Its exactly what I tend to like about movies. It’s well written, in a quirky sort of way, its funny and it has a lot of heart. I’m thrilled to think that Ellen Page and Diablo Cody are going to get a lot of work as a result of this film. Its well deserved.
Also, I think Atonement is going to clean up a bunch of awards this year, and deservedly so. If you’ve not yet seen it, I encourage you to give it a chance; there’s more to it than I was expecting.
Best Actor
Will Win: Daniel Day Lewis, There Will Be Blood
The film, itself, was a little underwhelming for me, but he gave a rich, powerful performance. He was Its the kind of performance that younger actors will study in depth, and rightly so. He was in something like 90% of the shots for that film, and he owned every second of it.
Should Win: Daniel Day Lewis, There Will Be Blood
I know, I’m not reaching out too far on this one, but There Will Be Blood was essentially a two and a half hour one man show. The rest of the category just can’t compare.
Best Actress
Will Win: Julie Christie, Away from Her
I have to admit that my knowledge of this category is on the weak side, but it does seem that Christie has all the buzz she needs for this win. Laura Linney is going to win an Oscar someday, I just doubt that it’ll be tomorrow.
Should Win: Ellen Page, Juno
It wasn’t just the script. Ellen Page gave a particularly unique performance, and made it look like she wasn’t even trying. It wasn’t just that she was smart, she was passionate, idealistic, and could move between overwhelmed and capable within the same shot. If she doesn’t win this year- and she could- she’ll have one soon enough.
Best Actor in a Supporting Role
Will Win: Javier Bardem, No Country For Old Men
Bardem’s performance is anchored around one central truth- you’re never provided with any reason why he is the way he is. He’s chilly, ruthless and fortified around his own brutal mortality. His the monster who has no interest in convincing anyone that he’s right or wrong, and I’ve got goose bumps even just thinking about it.
Should Win: Javier Bardem, No Country For Old Men, but...
How is it that Charlie Wilson’s War is really no where to be found in all of this? Not in Writing, not in directing, not anywhere. I must be missing something, because if I were to choose, I’d have had Charlie Wilson in the Best Picture category above There Will Be Blood. So, if only because it’s the only nomination the film has, Philip Seymour Hoffman deserves a chance to represent his team.
Best Actress in a Supporting Role
Will Win: Ruby Dee, American Gangster
Not only did she basically steal the film from Crowe and Washington, I mean, she’s Ruby Dee. That’s not to say it was a weak category this year- far from it- but this is deserved on several levels, and I suspect that even her fellow nominees would have to concede that.
Should Win: Ruby Dee, American Gangster
Yeah, I really don’t have anything else to say. This one feels like a straight forward win.

I'm with you on There Will Be Blood. Definately a one-man show.
I hope Atonement gets some love by the Acacdemy. It really was a great movie, but I feel like it has no momentum going into tomorrow.
Ruby Dee's scene stealing slap was great- good enough for a nom, but not enough for the win. Expect Blanchett to get her second Oscar.

I totally agree with you about how Julie Christie will win, but Marion Cotillard is bringing a lot of good buzz with her and so is Ellen Page. The vote could split three ways and give it to Laura Linney (really, Cate Blanchett has no chance in the category, so she will win Best Supporting Actress. Angelina Jolie was robbed her rightful nomination.)

I just saw all 5 best picture nominess today. Let me just say, Daniel Day Lewis deserves that Oscar he's going to get tomorrow. And now I'm going to bed. Being at a movie theater for over 12 hours has made me quite sleepy.
Rose Tyler 02/24/08
I'm gonna have to argue here that Cate, Amy Ryan and Tilda Swinton all have better all have better shots at the Oscar than Ruby. I'm afraid she'll have to be happy with her SAG award.

We will see Rose Tyler. We will see. My feeling is that this is one of those awards that will be- in this case rightly- given both on the merits of the performance and the body of work that has gone unrecognized until now.

CptSassyPants- very brave. I've thought about doing that the past couple years, Ive been fearful that I'd be so burnt out on sitting in that theater that regardless of the order, I just hate the fifth film shown.

Actually it wasn't too bad. Although it definitely depends on the theater you go to. We had a newer nice theater with comfy seats with good back support. Plus that give you about 20 minutes between each movie and a half an hour between 2 movies for dinner. Which worked out since we brought our California Pizza Kitchen back to the theater and ate it during Juno. But yeah the last movie was tough. That's when I got a little restless. But all and all, I'd do it again.
