Exciting TV? Not on your 'quarterlife'.

Unlike most of America, I actually watched the premier of NBC's exciting new show "quarterlife."

Well, 'watched' isn't exactly the right word. More like listened to. Because there isn't a lot of action in "quarterlife." It's mostly talking. The main character, Dylan, spends half the episode talking to her laptop as she records her vlogs for the world to see. Unfortunately, it's a concept that would work better on radio than the small screen.

So Dylan records her thoughts about her friends and associates and major 'secrets' get out. Dylan is in love with her neighbor? Gasp! Her neighbor loves her roommate? No! Lisa is an alcoholic? Shocker! But none of these themes are explored in any depth whatsoever.

Here's an example of how it could have been more interesting. What if someone bothered to explore the fact that a so-called alcoholic spends her time working IN A BAR. Or how Dylan's editor-in-chief reacted when Dylan told on her boss for stealing her idea. Seriously, any of this would have made slightly more captivating entertainment.

To be fair to 'quarterlife', the lack of exploration worked much better in its original medium as an Internet series. Lacking a serious writing staff or perhaps a larger budget, the expectations were much lower. But it never should have made it to television. The target audience of young adults won't be watching TV. They WILL be surfing the Internet. Even the co-creator of the show, Marshall Herskovitz, said in an interview that it should never have gone to NBC.

Still, it was an interesting experiment to say the least. That a network would even consider putting on TV a series based on the Internet gives hope to those people that would otherwise never think they had a chance to make it to broadcasting. The star of 'quarterlife', Bitsie Tulloch, can relate to it, since she was discovered through appearing in the Internet series 'lonelygirl15'.

Sorry, 'quarterlife', but unfortunately, this is one show who's life has come to a very sad conclusion.
