My birthday is Monday. I'll be 27 years old. I've also been feeling sick for the past 10 days, so I'm beginning to feel a lot like an old lady--like I've aged so much this week. So, I go to drown my sorrows in a little American Idol, and what do I get? "Songs From the Year You Were Born" week-- definitely not helping my fear of getting older.
First of all, it was beginning to feel like a showcase from the year 1987 as Ramiele, Jason, Syesha, and Chikezie all sang weird songs from that year. I love "Alone", but it seemed like an odd choice for Ramiele to sing. Everything else was pretty forgettable. I don't think the others sang poorly, but I wouldn't be surprised if any of them were in the bottom three.
The next most common year represented was 1983. At this point, I'm feeling like a freakin' grandma! I didn't mind Brooke White's "Every Breath You Take". I was surprised they didn't give her more crap for starting over! I don't think that's ever been done on Idol before. Carly also sang "Total Eclipse of the Heart", which I wasn't impressed with, and David Cook sang "Billie Jean". Everyone LOVED this, but I didn't. "Billie Jean" is one of the greatest songs of all time and I did not like it reimagined as a ballad. I thought if he had brought the guitar back out, he could have really rocked it (especially if he could play bass guitar!), but instead he just copied a Chris Cornell version. I was so disappointed.
So we have a few odd years represented here--none of which made me feel like a spring chicken. David Archuleta was born in 1990! He also chose a song that I had never heard of, which I don't think is going to help him much. Kristy Lee Cook was born in 1984, and chose to sing "God Bless the USA". Again, the judges loved this song choice, but I think they only said that for fear of seeming un-American. Since the government has probably tapped my cell phone a long time ago for buying movie tickets to "Farenheit 911" and being a registered Democrat, I have no problem saying that I felt like it was not the right song to sing on American Idol. I'm a pretty patriotic person, but it felt like something I sang in pre-school in 1984.
Then came my favorite of the night--Michael Johns. I've always been a Michael Johns fan, even though people have been criticizing him a lot lately. Maybe because he was the one and only contestant older than I am (representing 1978!), but I loved that he actually sang Queen very very well.
So I really don't know who will go home tonight. Should be interesting to see!

Tell me about it! I felt like slitting my wrists last night when I realized I was a junior in high school when David Archuleta was still in utero.
Michael Johns was really good last night, and I was happy because I was rooting for him to finally have a good American Idol moment. But I still don't think he's proved anything other than he would be an awesome frontman for a Queen cover band. I still think he has a lot to prove, but I hope he's around a few more weeks..
