Losties pt 2: the best of the rest

Posted 5 months ago, 484 Views, 7 Comments

Sorry for the delay, folks. They've got me strapped to a bed in a big white room, because I won't stop mumbling 4 8 15 16 23 42 over and over...I don't think I'm gonna make it. Before the doctors shot me full of seditives, I was able to throw some of these questions together:

Who's the smartest?

  • Ben: It takes quite a bit of brains to run an entire community and keep your enemies' heads' spinning at the same time. The man is perhaps the best master manipulator TV has seen in a while.
  • Locke: The guy is full of anecdotes about everything. He seems to be able to deliver just the right quotes at just the right times. He reads, he philosophizes, he hunts. The dude's a walking encyclopedia.
  • Sayid: Get his hands on technical gear and watch him work his magic. Besides communications, the man is sharp-minded when it comes to strategizing and military tactics as well. Oh, and he has an uncanny ability to sniff out a liar.
  • Faraday: Mathematician. Physicist. Super genius. But don't call him that, because he doesn't like to be pigeon-holed. May have broken the code for freakin' time travel...

Face Off: Best new/breakthrough character?

Desmond, initiating the lockdown sequence ("Live Together, Die Alone")  (promotional still) V.S. Juliet at Ben's operation ("I Do")  (promotional still)

Desmond kicked off season 2, disappeared, and then returned for the heartbreaking finale that nearly pushed all the island on-goings to the back seat for one of primetime's most epic love stories. Between newbies like Eko, Ana Lucia, and the other Tailies, he proved to be the only one with true staying power.

Juliet kicked off season 3, and bested Nikki and Paulo for actually being interesting in Lost's third year. As an ambiguous "enemy", she gave us an insider's look at who the Others are, and still maintained "good-guy" status. Check out her magnetic performance in One of Us, that probably locked her spot as a series regular.

BEST MAKEUP

  • Kate cleans up pretty nice in her flashbacks/flash forwards
  • Sure looks like Ben's been beaten to a pulp! Oh, wait...
  • Richard's eyeliner
  • The many wigs of John Locke

BEST SONG USAGE

  • ‘Make Your Own Kind of Music'
  • ‘Walkin' After Midnight'
  • ‘Moonlight Serenade'
  • ‘Downtown'

BEST ACCENT

  • Naveen Andrews
  • Henry Ian Cusick
  • Dominic Monaghan
  • Emile De Ravin
  • Adawale Akinnuoye-Agbaje

Face Off:

"Folks are much more inclined to hear that one percent chance that things are going to be okay.". ("Man of Science, Man of Faith") V.S. Image:Locke dad.jpg

Christian Shephard is the chief of surgery and pretty hard-nosed when it comes to raising his son. He's got a daughter in Sydney, too. The man gets around. Anthony Cooper also gets around. That name is just one of many aliases from this con man who doesn't really acknowledge John as a son. Get too nosey and he'll throw you out a window.

  • Shephard's pros: Respected in society
  • Shephard's cons: Jack Daniels
  • Cooper's pros: knows how to hunt.
  • Cooper's cons: money and debt.

Heads Up! The best quick thinker award: Sayid

  • -Short on time, he uses gunpowder to seal Charlie's head wound
  • -He still decided to dig up Henry Gale's grave, and discovered the truth about Ben
  • -Bound and gagged, he still snapped a guy's neck with his feet!
  • -Still managed to kill is lover after finding out she was an assassin

CUTEST KID

  • Lil' Jack (White Rabbit)
  • Lil' Eko (The 23rd Psalm)
  • Lil' Sun (The Glass Ballerina)
  • Lil' Sawyer (Confidence Man)
  • Lil' Ben (The Man Behind the Curtain)

Face Off: Charlie vs. Hurley round II

Click to view full size image V.S. Click to view full size image

Yeah, but let's say they were kids.

  • Kid Charlie pros: He got a piano for Christmas.
  • Kid Charlie cons: Afraid of a sodding swimming pool.
  • Kid Hurley pros: He's not fat yet, so he's got a chance.
  • Kid Hurley cons: His dad is Cheech Marin

Face Off:

Walt gazes out at his estranged father Michael from the window of his grandmother's house in New York. V.S. Alex pleads with Locke not to kill Ben. ("Confirmed Dead")

I liked this suggestion! Ah, kids! They can be a pain in the butt. Just ask Micheal and Ben, two dads who have a hard time keeping theirs under control.

  • Walt's pros: throws knives, arsonist, "special"
  • Walt's cons: uncontrollable growth
  • Alex's pros: mad slingshot skillz; powerful pop
  • Alex's cons: might be too nice for her own good

BEST TEAM

  • -Locke, Sayid, and Kate (with Rousseau) are going to rescue Jack (Par Avion)
  • -Alpha male team Jack, Sawyer, and Locke go in search of Micheal (The Hunting Party)
  • -Jack, Kate, and Charlie head the initial expedition into the Jungle (Pilot)
  • -Sayid, Jin and Bernard stay behind as sharpshooters (Through the Looking Glass)

BEST EFFECTS

  • The smoke monster
  • The plane crash
  • The hatch implosion
  • Location flashbacks (recreating Iraq, Sydney, Korea, etc)

Which character has had the best story arc/flashbacks?

  • Sun and Jin
  • Mr. Eko
  • Juliet Burke
  • Michael Dawson
  • (write-ins welcome)

4 8 15 16 23 42...flipflipflipflipflipflip...
Just saving the world...

Ah, a new blog? Awards choice? How could I miss such an event? Ethan showed up at the hospital I stayed at. I looked up at him with bloodshot eyes, and he said "You have a job to do." He got me out of my straightjacket and I escaped, just in time to submit my picks for RobGrizzly's acclaimed blog. Here they are:

Who's the smartest?

Ben: As much as I trust John Locke, it couldn't have been smart for him to let Ben out. He is a genius in more ways than one. I don't think I need to explain.

Face Off: Best new/breakthrough character?
DESMOND!

BEST MAKEUP
Sure looks like Ben's been beaten to a pulp! Oh, wait...

BEST SONG USAGE
???Make Your Own Kind of Music'

BEST ACCENT
Emile De Ravin

CUTEST KID
Lil' Eko (The 23rd Psalm)

BEST TEAM

Locke, Sayid, and Kate (with Rousseau) are going to rescue Jack (Par Avion)

BEST EFFECTS

The plane crash

Which character has had the best story arc/flashbacks?

Mr. Eko

Sep292006_899_lg

Yay, thanks Rob!

Smartest
Ben is 10 steps ahead of everyone else.

Best new/breakthrough character?
Desmond, hands-down. Great reveal that really the whole thing is his and Penny???s love story.

BEST MAKEUP
Richard's eyeliner. I wish I could wear eyeliner that well.

BEST SONG USAGE
???Walkin' After Midnight,' but only because Nathan Fillion was in the same scene.

BEST ACCENT
Henry Ian Cusick. Sexy? Aye!

CUTEST KID
Lil' Ben (The Man Behind the Curtain). I like geeks.

BEST TEAM
Jack, Kate, and Charlie head the initial expedition into the Jungle (Pilot). Classic

BEST EFFECTS
The plane crash, though they do a great job with the location flashbacks too.

Which character has had the best story arc/flashbacks?
Juliet Burke

May192006_877_lg

oh, and for the other ones?
-Li'l Charlie
-Walt...he's one freaky kid

May192006_877_lg

Whoops.
Shepard beats Cooper. The first time a drunk beats a con man. That would be interesting to watch. And...may I make a suggestion? Rosseau vs. Naomi. Both tough and dead. Both suspicious and strange. Who would win?

Oct52007_957_lg

hmmm...
I think Rousseau takes Hot Hot Naomi, because I don't think she'd get knifed in the back. And if someone did catch her by surprise, she'd probably pull it out and patch herself back up, all by herself; she's that hardcore

Apr152005_815_lg

Who's the smartest?
Ben, no question. He's so far ahead of eveyone else that not only does he know what they're going to do next even before they do, he knows what they'll be doing five years from now.

Best new chracter
Desmond. Who could have guessed from his first scenes as the crazy hatch-dweller that he'd become the heart of the show?

Best Makeup
Richard's eyeliner -- maybe that's the source of his eternal youth? Plus, special shout-out to Claire for managing to pull off full makeup everyday despite being a single mother living in a shack on the beach.

Best Song Usage
"Make Your Own Kind of Music" Nothing says 'secret underground bunker tasked with saving the world' like Mama Cass.

Best Accent
Henry Ian Cusick, aye brutha.

Face Off: Battle of the Bad Dads
Hmm, I'd have to call this one a tie. Cooper wins the World Father Ever award for stealing his son's kidney AND trying to kill him, but Christian Shephard knows everyone on the Island -- including Jacob.

Cutest Kid
Lil' Ben. He looked like Harry Potter, had a pet bunny, & wasn't evil yet!

Charlie vs Hurley
Lil' Hurley. Even as a kid, Charlie was a bit of a whiner.

Face Off: Problem Children
Walt. Sure, Alex has the best aim with a slingshot since Dennis the Menace, but has she ever potentially conjured up a polar bear just to spite her dad? I didn't think so.

Best Team
Locke, Sayid & Kate (+Rousseau) rescue Jack, even though he didn't want rescuing. That C4 sure came in handy!

Best Effects
The Smoke Monster. It looks just a real one!

Best Story Arc
Tough call. Out of those four, I'd pick Juliet for her transformation from meek scientist to cold-hearted Other. But a write-in for Desmond, since so many of his episodes are near the top of my favourites.

Apr182008_987_lg

Smartest: Faraday. Anyone can manipulate--not everyone can do advanced physics.

Best new character: Tie. Love 'em both too much.

Best makeup: Sure looks like Ben's been beaten to a pulp! Oh, wait...I don't know if anyone here has tried to create a fake bruise, but trust me, it's way harder than putting on eyeliner.

Best song usage: "Make Your Own Kind of Music" Duh. <3 Desmond!

Best accent: Naveen Andrews. Out of all of them, he's the only one fakin' it, and who would know?

Face off: Christian Shephard has more real world power AND freaky showing up in Jacob's cabin power.

Cutest kid: Lil' Sawyer was ADORABLE!

Face off Charlie/Hurley II: This time, my money's on Hurley. He was a kid from the hood, and Charlie plays piano.

Face off Problem Children: Alex is pretty raw, but Walt is wayyy scarier.

Best team: Jack, Kate, and Charlie (Pilot). Don't bet against a classic.

Best effects: The plane crash seemed pretty damn real.

Best story arcs/flashbacks: Desmond, duh! Maybe the Odysseus thing isn't that original, but it is compelling!
