Let me start by saying what a avid office fan I am. I think it is ingenious comedy. And I hated tonight's episode.
Every once in a while, we are reminded that, while Michael is an oblivious, insensitive idiot 95% of the time, about 5% of the time he is an office manager of a struggling company in a medium-sized city, and his awareness of his own mediocrity is shown through the jokes and the office antics. Usually the writers, if they choose to show this side of michael, wait until the last few minutes, and then gives him some redemption at the end to lighten the mood. But I felt as though the entire episode was spent showing the viewers not only how incompetant michael can be, but that he does recognize this shortcoming, and is painfully sensitive about it. Taking the air out of Michael's pomp and circumstance, while showing more of his character, also sucks the fun out of the episode.
That being said, every time he calls Stanley "sassy" I crack up. And they need more derrick scenes.

Thanks for the post. I just got into the show recently and found a bunch of great stuff online about it. Here's an interesting interview with Stanley:
