Keep your mind wide open:
There were no survivors of Oceanic Flight 815.
My theory: The Island is really heaven, or something to such an effect, and a quite imperfect one at that. Why not? Locke can walk, miraculously, as soon as he touches the island. Rose's cancer just goes away. Kate can escape the law. Claire can raise her son in a healthy environment. Jack has challenges where he can act as leader/fixer. What could be better? People still "die," there are still "villians," and still problems and challenges and mysteries to be solved. Perhaps Desmond's phone call to Penny is something like a "religious experience" for her on earth. Maybe Ben is a permanent inhabitant, put to challenge the others on their way to perfection. Perhaps the flash-forwards are just another "level" past the island: Jack and Kate have a life of love with Aaron. Perhaps they have "graduated" into the near-perfect level of heaven, while other survivors, i.e. Jin, Sayid, Hurley, still have something to fix, to make right, before they can do the same. Charlie? Perhaps he's gone to a whole new section. Locke? Sawyer? Claire? I'm not sure. It's very complicated, and even I cannot explain half of it (I'm quite confused), but it is a general idea that others can use as a springboard. But, keep in mind we never saw the plane impact the island: they all just...woke up...
