Watching Tuesday night's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame show left me ambivalent. Every few minutes a new feeling would come over me: disappointment, sympathy, lust, amusement, annoyance, eagerness, dismay, love, pride and indignation. I won't go over the entire show play by play because that's already been done, but I will go over the instances in the show that triggered the emotions I mentioned a sentence ago.
I was expecting to be blown away by my new love interest David Cook. This however did not happen. Neither of the songs he chose allowed him to have a 'David Cook moment.' I preferred the second performance "Baba O'Reilly" to "Hungry Like A Wolf" (although I loved the way he stealthily moved across the stage). The clapping in the mosh pit was so infuriating- I thought Debbie the stage manager told them to stick to swaying?! Inspite of it, I got lost in his voice for the millionth time this season and MAN was he looking fine! I hope he doesn't get rid of the facial hair. Swooon.
My feelings of annoyance exclusively involved Sayesha. To be fair, I'll first highlight the positives. I thought her performance of "Proud Mary" was entertaining, albeit "copy-cattish." She was totally off on the second half of the song, but hey, I'm supposed to be dishing out the favorable aspects of her performance, so I'll say that Sayesha sure has got the moves! She also looked friggin gorgeous!
Now onto the negatives. She was shrieky and off-key in her performances. Once again she came across as fake in her prepackage video. Her spiel about how "A Change Is Gonna Come" not only relates to the civil rights movement but to her own idol journey was barf worthy. What's with the idols this season comparing songs about civil rights to American Idol- not so long ago Carly talked about how "Black Bird" captures the plight of struggling artists in the oh-so-brutal music industry.
Call me a cynic but I have my suspicions about Sayesha's tears being authentic. I have to say the girl knows how to play her cards right. Not only will she get the sympathy vote, but the 'cleavage vote' as well.
Jason Castro. I know alot of you would like to "pack his suitcase" for him and personally ship him off into obscurity. But my heart broke a little tonight for Jason. In all fairness, his rendition of "I Shot The Sherriff" was atrocious. I was hoping he'd give a show stopping performance and put the conspirators...ahem...I mean Idol producers in their place, but sadly this did not happen. Simon hurled ruthless criticism at Dreadlocks, but not once did his smile falter. Kudos to him for that. He even mouthed something that looked like "Don't Vote" when Ryan did the numbers!
Before his second performance, Ryan made a "let's see what disaster he's going to subject us to this time" face when he presented Jason. This was really uncalled for and I wanted to kick Ryan's puny butt. It isn't the first time they've deplored Jason's performance before he even performed...emm PaulaGate. I actually liked his performance of "Mr. Tambourin Man" and I intend to buy the studio version. If he hadn't lost the lyrics, I think it would have been a good performance.
Unfortunately it was what it was. I reiterate, however, it was unacceptable for Ryan to present Jason's second performance the way that he did. I don't blame the guy for wanting out. The good news is he'll probably get his wish tonight.
Arch-Elmo stole the show. He made me recall why he snagged so many hearts (including mine) 3 months ago when he first debuted his exorbitant talent and uncontainable glee. He was back to his old quirky/happy self in the prepackage video -"I sing it to myself in my room (giggles)..i sing it to my dog...whoever." His rendition of "Stand By Me" was absolutely beautiful. He seemed more at east than he's ever been, and even sang the line "beautiful girls" looking flirtatiously into the mosh pit.
I didn't love his second performance of "Love Me Tender" as much as his first, but he still "crushed the competition" as Simon flippantly put it.
Ok now onto the indignation part of my emotional journey on this week's show. The idol producers blatantly replaced the end of little David's "Love Me Tender" with another clip--possibly his performance from dress rehearsal--during the recap. When Archie performed it he ran out of steam as he sang the last note "always" and he looked sheepish before breaking into a smile. However, in the recap, he mysteriously sang the note perfectly and immediately smiled his glorious smile.
Now the question is- am I being distrusting? I think not! THAT WAS NOT THE SAME CLIP! I don't get it...why are the producers pushing David (unethically) so hard when he's already frontrunner and tween sensation? This coupled with back shots of him when he flubs lyrics, is just plain fraudulent. Shame of the Idol producers for disrespecting the competition and the Idol audience. Besides, haven't they heard of the rewind button on Tivo? Best fraud detector ever.
The Idol producers want suggestions to improve the show? Here's one: Stop Cheating!

Based on the EW interview with Jason actually said "Vote" and then said it again to emphasize it. He didn't say "Don't Vote"

I am not an Archuleta fan and usually wont defend him - but they did show shots from dress rehearsal for David Cook too - did you see him crouching and ready to pounce in the replay of "Hungry" he did not do that on the show (oh I wish he had though)
