Top Five Performances-- Part 1, Performances Only

Alright, I'm going to critique performances and then get down to the REAL hulabaloo.

~~

First off, my clothing ire is saved for the hideous duo of Ryan's skinny tie and Brooke's entire outfit. Pastel, deadly dull blue pirate shirt with a too-big black belt and... glitter pants? She must've gotten Carly's stylist. But as I see the intro tape, I begin to understand. It's a shout-out to Neil's shirts!

Jason 1= "Forever in Blue Jeans". Please, I pray as he steps onto the stage, please don't forget the lyrics. I know the judges slammed it, but I heartily enjoyed it. The performance was easy, pleasant, joyful, comfortable (in a good way) and just heartily him.

DC 1= It's "I'm Alive" or something like that. I'm too distracted by the ugly jacket and the obviously scripted banter with Ryan. The guitar intro was awesome, the "Innocent" like growl? Not so much. It's just all so low. Shake it up! Throw me some high notes as a treat. I'm waiting for a variation that never arrives.

Brooke 1= "I'm A Believer"? Ohhhh, you have got to be kidding me. Out of all the things to pick, she chooses a campy song made ridiculous by a singing donkey and ogre? It's too low for her register by far, AND SHE WHOOED! She admitted it was a mistake and yet she does it again? Does she not learn? It's just painful. She can go home now. I'm through. I'm done. At least it picked up a bit near the end, but not enough.

DA 1= "Sweet Caroline"... Is he trying to be sexy? Well, to accomplish that, the little boy needs to stop bouncing up and down like a hen. But I think I like it. Maybe. It's happy, peppy, eager, energetic. My goodness, I just described a puppy.

Syesha 1= "Hello Again". Everybody wave! Well, she's wearing a very pretty dress with a flattering neckline, but who could tell with all those stupid hands in the way? The cameraman must be incensed. The beginning was gorgeous, but I flinched a little when she went harder in the middle. When she reaches for the power notes, her voice just becomes so strident. And there's too much vibrato on the "o" of "hello". Just keep it clean and pure. But it's pretty. I enjoyed it very much.

Jason 2= "September Morning". Oooooh. I caught my breath during his opening. It, to borrow from Randy, is smokin'. It's brilliant. It was so beautiful. Not just pleasant, but beautiful. I think I'll buy it. The ending stunk, but I thoroughly enjoyed the rest. And the judges are all ridiculous.

DC 2= "All I Really Need Is You". It's pretty with the high notes I longed for in the last performance. Yet... yet somehow I'm bored. It was just okay for me, certainly not "blazin'" or "brilliant". I did like the end with the falsetto, though.

Brooke 2= Ryan Seacrest! Tasteless man. If Brooke had pointed out to us that she had her lyrics on her hand, that would have been one hting. But HE pointed it out, HE put her on the spot, HE'S angling to get her sent home! BOOOOO!!! Happily, in spite of his faux pas and the fact that she's stuck behind that monstrous piano, she did beautifully. It was very pretty and I liked it. THIS is the Brooke we love.

DA 2= Ah, he's stolen a page from KL's playbook with "America". Patriotic, sappy... who's gonna dare vote him off on this song? Anyone who's sick of the judges' favoritism, that's who. First he botches his lyrics last week, and this week puberty strikes back as his voice cracks mid-lyric, and not ONE calls him on it. David, at least, took it well, nearly laughing in the middle of the song over his goof.

Syesha 2= No shoes again, eh? Well her performance of "Thank the Lord for the Nighttime" was thoroughly enjoyed, even barefooted. It was very catchy, very fun, but there were a few times where something about her manner still screamed FAKE! And she should've danced some. But in no way do I think she's "in trouble" as Simon put it. I even tried to vote, but the lines were busy.
