The Best of Jon Stewart

Yes, I know, it's rather pointless to write a recap of the Oscars when everyone knows who won and there have been a lot of live blogs, etc. What I'm recapping is just some of the great Jon Stewart moments during the broadcast.

The opening monologue was pretty good. I especially liked the comment that any time we see a woman or a black man as president, a meteor is likely to hit the Statue of Liberty. It's true! If Hillary or Obama wins, that means we'll all be living in a disaster movie! There were also a few good lines in there about the writers, especially this: "They cancelled the Vanity Fair Oscar party out of, quote 'respect for the writers.' Want to know how you could show respect for the writers? INVITE THEM TO THE VANITY FAIR OSCAR PARTY."

After mentioning a few actresses who were pregnant, Jon Stewart held a mock ceremony for babies. The baby went to....Angelina Jolie. It came off much better than it sounds, trust me.

A great picture: Jon Stewart and the soloist from August Rush playing Wii Tennis on the giant screen. It has to be seen to be believed.

Referring to what might have happened had the writers strike continued, Jon Stewart said that there would have been a lot of montages. As an example, he then presented "Oscar's tribute to periscopes and binoculars" and we were all treated to a montage of...periscopes and binoculars. It reminded me a lot of a line of his from two years ago after one such montage and he said "and all of those problems were never heard from again."

By far, the classiest moment of the night: Marketa Irglova, the co-winner for Best Original Song was cut off before she could give her thank you speech as they went to a commercial break. When the broadcast returned, instead of moving on with his shtick, Stewart brought Marketa back onto the stage to give her speech. It is by far the classiest thing I have ever seen at the Oscars.

And that's it! Oh, and the rest of the Oscars? Pretty much your standard, boring fare.
