Chickie's Take on the Top 3

Well next week it's all over, and I will have nothing to write about.

So when they get to the Top 3, the contestants sing three songs. What a coincidence! The deal is that the judges get to pick one song for one contestant, the contestants get to pick whatever they want to sing, and the producers pick the third song for each of the contestants. Got it? There will be a quiz on that later.

Pauler gets to pick David Archuleta's song, and she choses "And So It Goes," by Billy Joel. Now I thought I knew my Billy Joel songs, but I can't place that one. You know what though? I liked it. I really liked it. I think that was the first time I ever thoroughly enjoyed a performance by David Archuleta. He sang the beginning a cappella and was able to keep his pitch when the instruments came back in. He didn't trample the song with vocal runs. I found it quite pleasing and sweet. Well done, little guy. Well done.

Randy calls it a "dope" song. Randy always needing to be hip.

I didn't notice what Pauler said about it. I was too busy looking at her hair. Somebody done the faux well this week.

Simon though it was good and typically Archuleta. Yes it was, but at least it was good.

Syesha is up next, and she's looking stunning! Wow...the stylists stepped up their game for the last female standing. Randy gets the honor of choosing for Ms. Mercado and picks "If I Ain't Got You," by Alicia Keyes. Oh gee, what a shock. My SO (significant other) thinks that Syesha made it to the Top 3 because she's the only female that had sex appeal, and I'm beginning to think that's true. It certainly can't be because she's such a great singer. This song wasn't horrible, but it wasn't great. At least I didn't think so. My feelings echoed Simon's. She sang it well but it was no stretch.

David Cook gets to sing Simon's choice, and that's "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face." Simon calls it one of the "great songs of all time." I remember this song was on the radio over and over again when I was a kid, and I thought it was the most God-awful boring song I'd ever heard. I still do. Perhaps Simon chose it to challenge DC's arrangement skills, although I suspect he may have chosen it because his little discovery, Leona Lewis, also recorded it.

Randy wanted some rock. Pauler thinks both Randy and Simon should get over themselves, and Simon thinks it was one of David's best performances. Of course he does. He picked the song.

All in all, I'd probably choose Cook's version over Roberta Flack's anyday, but that's only if someone forced me to listen to one of them.

Round 2, and Archuleta sings his choice, which is "With You" by Chris Brown. Hah, Disney David sings Radio Disney! It was eh. Just eh, for me. I don't think much of the song, and his version of it was... well... eh.

Randy doesn't think the lyric "my boo" works for little white boys from Utah. Pauler disagrees and thinks it's ok for little white boys from Utah. Simon was just happy that David didn't do a sappy ballad, but his reference to chihuahuas and tigers only masked his real feelings that little white boys from Utah should stay away from Chris Brown material.

Syesha chose "Fever" (natch), and she even has a prop in her act (natch). The chair ain't working, and she ain't working the chair either. Her vocals were weak and unimpressive. I'm beginning to think though that she and Ricky Minor have a little thing going on.

Randy must have a fever because he thought she sang it amazingly well. Pauler can't figure out whey she picked that song. Simon thinks she blew it.

Syesha does look good though.

David Cook sings "I Dare You To Move," which is a song by the band Switchfoot. Never heard of them or the song. I thought it was kind of dull, and his vocals were all over the place. It may be one of his favorite songs, but either the song didn't do him justice or he didn't do the song justice. Wasn't a good match.

Randy said it was pitchy, baby. He was right this time. Pauler said it was too short. Well, duh, but that's not his fault. Simon wasn't moved.

So the producers pick "Longer," by Dan Fogelberg, for David Archuleta. Well, Simon, there's your sappy ballad. Hey, you can't blame the kid this time. To me it felt like Little David took his card, punched in, did his job satisfactorily then left for the day. Badda-bing, badda-boom.

I thought the background singing during his performance was atrocious. Were they really necessary?

Randy thought it was hot. Paula thought it was lovely. Simon thinks Nigel Lythgoe has a hole in his head for choosing that song.

TPTB makes Syesha sing a song from the movie "Happy Feet." The song is called "Hit Me Up," and by the end of it I was hoping someone would hit me over the head. Was it me or was she off key throughout most of the song? Was it me or was the band hardly audible?

Randy thought is was Rihanna lite. Pauler pretty much tells her she ought to pack her bags 'cause she ain't making the finals, baby, and Simon tells Syesha she is past her sell-by date.

Simon is also distressed because he thinks the song is about penguins, and remember, he has that bird thing. His knickers are in a twist.

So it's up to David Cook to clean up, and clean up he does. With the producers' choice of "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" (an Aerosmith power ballad), DC saves the best for last. I loved the beginning of the song - just David and the strings, but I know a Cook moment is right around the corner, and BAM! Lights, guitars, glory notes abound. It ended too quickly for me but not fast enough for me to think that David Cook just might win next week.

Randy wasn't impressed but that's because Randy wants Little David to win. Secretly Randy is loving it. Pauler says see you next week. Simon says DC wins the night.

So it appears we are gearing up for a David-David showdown. Unlike last year when I knew for weeks that Jordin Sparks was a shoo-in, I can't call this one, so I'm actually looking forward to the final results. Who do you think will be the next American Idol?

Thanks for reading!

Uh huh....nice recap, quite balanced, but like my gurl Bitten says, it's DAvid Cook FTMFW all the way. Cougars for Cook!

Avatar-cyan

David C - oh yeah.

I love Cookie. He is the only one who could take 'This Is My Now' and probably make it sound sexy.

Although Syesha may not have the strongest vocals they never the less are hot . Put it together with her performance which I thought was great , to me she comes out on top . That's the way I see it

Avatar-red

Well, Sid, you're not the only one. A lot of people on the AI boards thought Syesha was really good.
