The Hunt is On...

Thunderous applause! Not only for the return of ABC's best show, but for one of the most well-crafted, action-packed episodes of the entire series. Machine guns, explosions, assassinations, hired hits... man oh man did this show deliver! If it wasn't official before, it is definately official now, Micheal Emmerson is getting an Emmy next fall. The Shape of Things to Come saw more suspence per minute than Oscar movies like Michael Clayton did in its entire running time.
Why Lost is So Awesome: Reason #4.09: The Barracks Raid
There's an old saying that I think applies to this episode pretty well: "The enemy of my enemy is my friend." Alot of discoveries tonight. Like the fact that Ben can totally handle himself. He takes out two armed men in the desert, and by the show's end, he looks like Pee Wee Herman's evil hitman twin. He rocks the passports like credit cards, (Moriarty, eh? Nice touch), talks the great Sayid into joining his cause, and can summon the smoke monster like the Hand of God, obliterating his enemies. Benjamin Linus just became the most dangerous man on television.
(side note: I personally think this would have been a great opportunity to see the monster for the first time)
The funny thing about Ben is that 90% of everything he says is true. Yet it feels like he's always lying. Unfortunately, Linus finally loses one: His daughter. Really kind of crazy to see one of Ben's bluffs backfire. I don't think he was wrong in playing the "I know what I'm doing card". Who would have known the people he was dealing with would turn out to be rat bastar**. Poor guy. That one must have stung. And what's worse, the last thing sweet Alex hears is her father saying she means nothing to him.
Special Supporting Actor mention goes to Sawyer. It was really cool to see him in full on Hero Cowboy mode, dodging missiles, saving Claire, and standing up for Hurley. Jack, eat your heart out! His character really reached a new level of admiration from me.
Other discoveries:
1- Sayid finally reunited with Nadia, albeit only briefly. (His love life is so doomed).
2-Daniel Faraday is a bad liar. You, Bernard, are becoming more and more useful everyday!
I wonder if I'm the only one wondering who Sayid was referring to when he assumed Ben was another Spy? I'm also wondering the obvious: Why can't Ben kill Charles? I got a serious tingle down my spine watching their last scene together. I was thinking Desmond was totally marked for death, but now so is Penny! Will Ben do the unthinkable? Can Desmond keep her alive? Oh, Ben, you're so petty. There's another old saying that I think sums up this episode's hook pretty well, too: "Eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth.
Quote of the day: "'When' is sort of a relative term"- Jeremy Davies
Anyway, is it just me or has this show become more fun than ever? I meet every upcoming episode with an anticipation that I haven't felt this psyched about since season 1. Maybe even moreso. Now it's not about what happens next, it's about how it all ends out- and that to me is the more compelling question.
Friggin Sweet! They totally tried to annihilate Claire with a missle!
Ah, Snap! She survived.
Kinda funny: In the beginning, three extras get shot down like dominoes, one after the other.
R.I.P. Alex: I wasn't really a fan, but given the choice, stuck on an island with no rescue... sure, I'd do ya

Ben and Whitmore's conversation was the most intriging part of last night. I think that when Ben went into his secret room, presumably to summon the smoke monster, I think he may have jumped time as well to Iraq. Did you notice that he walked back out of the room, covered in dirt from his trip? Also, when Whitmore called Ben "boy", it made me wonder if he knew Ben back when he came to the island as a boy. Whitmore said that the island was his and would be again, maybe he was the one that started the Dharma program and is out for vengence after Ben destroyed it? Or, a bit more far fethched, Whitmore was the captain of the black ship, and after landing on the island, sustained long lasting life and used the island to grow an empire of wealth and power, eventually creating Dharma and losing Dharma?

I bet Widmore can't be killed because 'the Island won't let him die", just like what Tom said to Michael. Widmore bought the Black Rock diary at that auction, and they explained that The BR had been captained by Tovar Hanso, blah, blah, who died on an Island, where his journal was discovered and returned to his family. That was like, 200 years ago, I think. So anyway, Hanso's descendents (the Hanso who funded Dharma) decided to sell off the journal at auction,a nd Widmore bought it, and who knwos what secrets about the Island it has in it? The only way I can figure out that W thinks the Island is his is something having to do with that diary. Or maybe Widmore can't die because he's immortal. Maybe he learned the time trip thing, too......AAAAAAAARRRRGGGGHHHHH! This is the best show that's ever been on TV! Head frying, gotta stop.

to comment on your wonderment of who sayid thought ben was. I don't think he thought ben was a spy, i think he thought Ben was paparrazi (spg). When Ben sees Sayid on television he is surrounded by photographers and tells them "please, I just want to bury my wife." so, that's my thought on that. I don't think that Ben time traveled when he went into his man cave. when he went into and came out of the room, he was wearing the same outift with the exception of being more dirty. When he awakens in the dessert, he is wearing a totally different outfit. I don't think him going into the room and his flash forward were related. I think he (somehow) summoned smokey. just my opinion.

Rob have I ever mentioned that you are my hero? That recap was awesome. Why if I wasn't married...
Ben is one of greatest developed characters in television history. Never before have I ever been so intrigued especially by a "bad" guy. Though the casting of Alan Dale as Charles Whitmore suggested that this guy is the real bad guy. I mean does the dude play anything else?
Other then that I've got nothing. There is just too much to process. I'm so very glad Lost is back! And Battlestar and the Doctor are on tonight. Do people go out on Friday nights anymore? I mean why?

Great recap, Rob!
Very intense and action-packed episode with high emotional stakes. Poor Alex!
Desmond better be around to save Penny-I can just see it...Ben has Penny with a gun to her head and Des just swoops in and rescues her in some awesome way for their big reunion. Its totally going to happen, right?

I can't believe how awesome Ben was in this episode, either. I know Michael Emerson submitted this episode for his Emmy nomination, so if he doesn't win he'd better sic Smoky on those voters!
With Alex's death, Ben managed to simultaneously become more badas$ AND more sympathetic. I loved how he went back to his "aw shucks" Henry Gale demeanor at first in the desert, but once he'd tricked those guys into letting their guard down, he seamlessly switched to ruthless Others leader mode & took them out. "Oh, so you DO speak English." I will be seriously upset if he's the one in the coffin. (Though I don't think he is)
And Desmond totally has to save Penny. Those two had better get a big happy reunion, or else...
