Well...
...that sucked.
Perhaps my expectations were just too high. After all, the last time we had a wedding in Tree Hill, Rachel crashed a limo, two ladies got pregnant (well, not AT the wedding, but still), Nathan almost died, Brooke slapped Peyton, Dan found out his brother didn't try to kill him, and Lucas brooded. This time we just got Lucas brooding.
But, damn it, this was the hundredth episode! We know because it was titled, none too subtly, "Hundred," (remember when Joss Whedon titled the hundredth episodes of "Buffy" and "Angel" "The Gift" and "You're Welcome"? Now that was some great creativity in titling) and because there were a ton of flashbacks.
But other than that? The episode spun its wheels for an hour (more like half an hour if you count the nine commercial breaks) of agonizingly slow, predictable plot development without any of the zest or passion that one usually sees in any given episode, no matter how trashy it may be. Sure, there were some dialogue zingers thrown in here and there (Brooke: "Who takes their guy friend camping?" Peyton: "Jake Gyllenhaal."), but everything we have learned to love about the show was obviously lacking. It was a mess, and not even a hot mess.
Did anyone believe for a moment that the Lucas/Lindsey wedding would go off without a hitch? Anyone? Bueller? So why were we forced to wait through 45 minutes of build-up and one delightful fake-out sequence from Peyton (which was better than the rest of the episode combined) to see the writers take the easiest way out possible by having Lindsey put two and two together and run out of the church in the fabulous dress, too enamored in her own drama to bother stopping Skank Nanny from making off with Jamie by sticking one of her Minolos in her skull.
Speaking of writers taking the easy way out, let's talk Skank Nanny, who apparently crossed the line into Glenn Close territory sometime between being thrown out of her job by her hair and spying on the ceremony from the balcony. Readers (all two of you) may remember that I praised the show for not going the psycho nanny route two episodes ago. Whoops. And then of course no one would think of Skank Nanny as the perpetrator because she was SO two episodes ago and then Dan would save Jamie and * snore *...sorry, I fell asleep just thinking about the plot development.
Did anything we actually care about happen? Nathan and Haley are still apparently on the outs. Peyton didn't say a damn thing to Lucas again. No one got to react to Dan's big return (though I only really care to see how Karen responds). Oh, and Brooke wants a kid...* snore *...wha...I'm awake.
Anything good to mention? Bethany Joy Galeotti (who is definitely the MVP of this season) laying the verbal smackdown to Dan was fun, as were some of Skill's dialogue to Peyton before the wedding. It was good to see Karen again (and happy!), though she seems to now only speak in clichés. And the fact that I'm pretty sure Mouth did not have a single line the entire episode.
But this could have, and should have, been better. I wanted a fight between Peyton and Lindsey that resulted in at least one of them naked and the other falling into the wedding cake. I wanted Nathan and Haley to kiss and make up (for reals, not in some sort of wet dream sequence...not THAT kind of wet dream sequence you pervs). I wanted Mouth to die!
Then again, perhaps my expectations were too high. But really, is it too much to ask for at least one Peyton-inflicted bruise in an anniversary episode?

You know what? I agree!

I don't understand how you could think that. I mean this episode was basically better than most of season 4. The action was down i agree but the drama was up there.

I completely agree with you and kudos on getting your thoughts across in such an entertaining manner!
My biggest gripe about this season is the long drawn out Peyton/Lucas relationship. It's getting old, and is soooooo two seasons ago. They either need to get together or get over eachother.
Also, Brooke having a baby? She is my favourite character on the show because of her independent nature and witty one-liners. Can we honestly see her saying things like "somebody was being a full on diva ****," with a kid in tow?
We don't need another mother type on the show; we've already got Haley for that (Bethany by the way is doing a fantastic job this season).
Overall, I'm slightly disappointed in this season. Maybe my standards were too high, maybe I was overly excited about the fact that it'd skip the played out college years, who knows.
But I do think that we need Dan back on the show permanently so that he can wreak havoc on all the characters lives. We need more drama, more cliffhangers, and more action. Hopefully the second half of the season offers all this and more.
