So You Think You Can Dance: Cirque du Mark
The NBC Office is far cheerier and happier than the BBC one. I always got the impression that the British characters were stuck in the office; that they couldn't get out. In the NBC one, they're diluted enough to believe that they're achieving important work at the paper company- far easier to make fun of.
My basic problem with the American version is that Michael Scott is written to be so stupid that I find him hard to laugh at. In the British version, David Brent was desperate but clever. He just wanted everyone to think he was cool, and all his attempts to impress backfired miserably. Michael Scott is just an idiot, and it's hard to enjoy laughing at someone who seems to be mentally handicapped.
That's what she said. I'll admit that Michael is swinging more and more to the utterly silly, but in fairness, I think Brent got more crude and offensive as went through the series. When I think of the two shows, I think about the difference between Gareth and Dwight. Gareth is a bit weasel-ish to me, whereas Dwight is just incredibly self important, making him a lot easier to enjoy.
The whole American show is clearly designed to appeal to a broader audience. Everyone on the cast is better looking and more likable, which is what makes it feel to me more contrived. I cringed a lot more watching the British version. Those moments seemed more real - and horrible. I mean look at Michael and Jan. That relationship seems completely preposterous. I guess the British version was more over-the-top desperate, and the American is just more over-the-top silly.
That's a fair assessment; I suppose it comes down to if you like your comedy dark and awkward, or light and less important. Personally, when it comes to Thursday night prime time, light equals good.
This concludes the argument portion of our show. Please vote for me, and I'll make sure we all get puppies!

Dude, you're bribing your own team with puppies to win this throwdown? You must not be too confident in your argument...

I have great confidence in my argument. But I have complete confidence in puppies.
