Need I really say more?
Yes, actually, you should say more. I can concede that he wins for character most shrouded in mystery (unless we're to count Jacob as a character now). But to call him the most interesting is completely subjective. One of the compelling draws for Lost is it's diverse, complex ensemble of characters. All appeal to different people--I'm sure even Nikki and Paulo were fascinating to someone--and to boldly say that Ben is the most interesting is nothing more than opinion. If all we're going to do is throw around opinions, here's mine of Ben: he's one-dimensional. He's evil, creepy, and manipulative, but what else? I'm far more intrigued by Juliet, Desmond, Sayid, Hurley, Kate, and Christian Sheppard.
Alright...if I must. Ben is, by far, the most interesting, because there is such strong foreshadowing that Ben is actually the hero, but he seems to be so the opposite. Understanding the whole Ben story is key to understanding the entirety of Lost, I am convinced, and I cannot say that about any other character.
I am not convinced myself. As abrasive as he's become, I think it's still clear that Jack is our hero, and I'm willing to take the fact that he wasn't killed in the pilot as evidence of such (among other things). I do think "The Economist" made Ben appear more relevant than I'd care to give him credit for, but on the same note, it made him less of a mystery to me. Ben gets off the island and keeps doing what he always does-manipulate people. Imagine that. Juliet has him pegged right-he's a liar. That's all. I find tormented, Scottish, Odysseus-like psychics more interesting than liars, but that's just me.
Forfeited Turn
Also, as far as understanding the entirety of Lost in concerned, I'd venture to say that Walt is the most important. Or at least the most special. Also captivating: Scott and Steve. Yeah, you know you miss them. Take that!

I am a Ben Linus fan, I'll admit it and I'm not ashamed of it. But to call him THE most interesting character on LOST is intangible. The world of LOST has numerous characters, all that are interesting in their own ways (enough to devote episodes to). I would find more than a couple sleepless nights if a question was posed to me on who IS the most interesting character. By the way, John Locke is my favorite and he is pretty interesting.

Counteragent makes an excellent point. If Michael said Ben Linus is the most manipulative character on the show, or even ONE of the most interesting characters on Lost, you won't have any argument here. He certainly injected new life during the meddling season 2 as Henry Gale.
However, solidifying that claim marginalizes the fascination factor between the other characters. None of us will ever forget the moment Lost revealed that Locke was bound to a wheelchair before crashing on the island, which made us want to learn how he ticks (though season 2 Locke wasn't my favorite version of him). Desmond certainly got my attention once I watched the season 2 finale and from that point on. Even Jack, a protagonist I didn't really care for over the course of the show, gained an interesting side of him during the season 3 finale.

I think that what is most interesting about Ben is his motives. What are they? I can't wait till we learn more. Each new bit we learn about him does enhance my interest in him. I still have to say that he's in a race for most intersting with Locke, Hurley and Juliette. Desmond needs another episode before I lose my interest in him again.

Counteragent, I kind of agree with you in terms of the argument at hand, but one thing you said makes zero sense. Of COURSE Michael's point is subjective. It's a throwdown. You don't debate facts in a throwdown.

I actually think Ben is the most interesting person on the island. He's the one guy who I can honestly say "I wonder what he's thinking," or "I wonder what his angle is," or "what is he really trying to accomplish?" Everytime he opens his mouth.
Everyone on Lost is complex and interesting. But the guy who claims to have lived on the island his whole life? They guy who runs the show, manipulates others, and shows intillectual strength while seeming so physically harmless? Not even the best John Locke flashback can beat that!
Maybe it is only because we know so little about him, compared to the other castaways we've followed for 4 years. So naturally, there will be more intrigue towards the more mysterious characters on the show.
If we got 3 flashbacks from Ben per season he wouldn't be nearly as interesting.

Ben is the most interesting character because we really don't know his motivations. Is he Evil? Is he Good? Who is he? I mean we know his back story but when he joins the Others, we don't know much else except it appears he becomes their leader.
I also think John Locke is interesting. And what did he see when he viewed the 'monster'?
My fave character though (not because he's interesting) is Sawyer. He brings great comedic relief and I love that he never calls anyone by their actual name. Plus it's great to play the drinking game when ever he gets hit though Ben seems to be taking the getting hit each episode title.

Ben is certainly among the most interesting characters on the show, but like some have said, I think a lot of that comes from the fact that we know less about him than many of the other characters. He is the most MYSTERIOUS character on the show maybe...I think "interesting" may be too subjective a term. For me personally, I think Locke, Sawyer, Juliet are all extremely interesting and I want to know more and more about them.
