Super Bowl XLII? I mean, really. Yes, I understand that using Roman numerals adds a bit of 'class' -- but, c'mon, we're talking about a sporting event which took its name from a toy. Put it this way: Super Bowl LXXXVIII will be played in what year?

Since this is the closest I'm likely ever to come to studying Latin, I'm in favor of continued use of Roman numerals. It makes me feel smarter when watching 250-pound men collide at full 4.3 speed. Why must you try to dumb everything down, Wook?

Hey, Jay: Julius Caesar called, he wants his language back. Look, I'm all for the study of Latin. I took two years of it in high school. But their numbering system sucked. Big time. Which is why you didn't have to write that you like to watch "CCL-pound men collide at IX.III speed" You want Latin? The word 'super' comes from the Latin word for 'above' or 'on top of' (Mrs. Fowler, my high school Latin teacher, would be so proud of me!)

Really? Super Bowl 42? You want to transform America's premiere sporting event into nothing more than a bad sequel? Think of what you'll do to the economy, Wook? Who's going to want to buy a baseball cap that reads Super Bowl 80? It's confusing. People will take it as a reference to the Steelers/Rams game. But Super Bowl LXXX? That's just money. I'd order that cap right now! If you really want to make Mrs. Fowler proud of you, Wook, then recant this argument!

Don't try and confuse our intelligent readers, Woodruff. The NFL should do away with this silly (and self-important) nominal-numbering scheme, and adopt the ordinal-numbering system that works for most annual events. As in, the 53rd Academy Awards, or the 134th running of the Kentucky Derby. Or, even better, they ought to drop the numbering altogether and simply attach a year to the game, like they do for the World Series and the hockey and baseball championships. Clarity, simplicity, and transparency -- this is all I want. Surely, a professional sports league more known for its obfuscation and opacity, owes this much to its fans.

I hope I never have to stoop, as you've done here, Wook, to pandering to our TVFan audience (our discerning, well-educated, and extremely attractive TVFan audience, I might add) in a desperate attempt to earn their votes. (The only thing worse than that would be to attempt to bribe them with, say, free puppies.) And as for "transparency" and "obfuscation," I would like to bring one thing to the attention of TVFans everywhere: It pains me to have to report this, America, but Wook has been employing dubious tactics to secure votes. I caught him threatening one staff member, saying that he would not provide her avatar with an EW.com editor banner unless she voted for him. Is this the kind of America you want to support, TVFans? A vote for me is not just a vote not for Roman numerals in the Super Bowl - it's a vote for freedom!

Great topic, Wook!

Ok I read the argument- and I do have to agree with Wook- It's getting too confusing!!

I'm with Jay on this one. 'Super Bowl 42' does sound like a bad sequel. One starring Sylvester Stallone...

RE: those "dubious tactics"

I can explain that...........Hmm, no, I can't.

Oct312003_735_lgEW

Sorry, boss, Wook's right. Why? Three words: "Super Bowl C" -- enough said. Well, that and Wook threatened to withhold my EW.com avatar banner, too. Actually, that was the least of his threats.

Mar102006_867_lgEW

Wook!

Oct52007_957_lg

Oh, Come On. Super Bowl C would look incredible on a hat, or whatever it is NFL fans will be wearing in 2066

Mar102006_867_lgEW

I want to get me one.

Oct52007_957_lg

Jay, I have an idea. Instead of bribing voters with kittens or puppies, you should have some Super Bowl C hats made up and give those to people who vote for you...
