Apart from the Beatles and John Lennon as a solo artist, I can honestly say that Bob Dylan is my favorite music artist of all time. And since both the Beatles and John Lennon aren't around any more...
But why is Mr. Zimmerman the greatest? He never had a "pretty" voice, and these days his voice can be downright radio unfriendly, yet he packs so much emotional resonance into everything that he sings. His lyrics are monumental and poetic, and in that regard, I can't think of one modern peer he has.
There are great artists today, there's no doubting that, but not one of them can match Bob Dylan.

Say what??? Greatest living musician??? I don't think so.
With all due respect to Bob Dylan, I think a strong argument could be made for Bob Dylan being one of the most overrated musicians living today. Dylan is a great poet, and his songs usually have a beautiful message, but his voice is beyond excruciating. Calling Mr. Dylan the greatest living musician is like calling Calvin Coolidge the greatest president of all time. I wouldn't say Dylan is bad, but there are far more talented musicians still working today, including Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder, Tina Turner, Aretha Franklin, and Tony Bennett.
Sorry UnpluggedCrazy, but Dylan is far from being the greatest living musical artist.

I'll give ya greatest living songwriter for sure. I'll have to think about the artist part. I do dig on Bob Dylan though.

Bold...I'm gonna have to go the other way, though: there are too many other close candidates in this race. It's too close to call.

Sorry but I have to disagree with you, Dylan is not and never was the greatest living musical artist. He was in the right place at the right time/era and managed to touch a nerve during a very vulnerable time for our country. I am not saying he isn't a great songwriter; just not a songwriting god. For what it's worth if he was still alive I would have to rank Warren Zevon a bit higher on the list.

Whoa, another Zevon fan! Dylan couldn't hold a candle to'em. Reminds me of that scene from the movie "Dewey Cox: Walk Hark" where Dewey is going through his Dylan phase, singing onstage about squirrels with guns eating pasta or whatever it was. Off stage someone turns to a band member and says "what the hell is he talking about?" and he replies "it's deep man." LOL, exactly!
