So You Think You Can Dance: Cirque du Mark
Finished watching the new "Spectacular Spiderman" on Kids WB. (Don't ask). It probably would have been decent if not for the animation. Why do American shows insist of having a Japanese style? Thank you, Pokemon and Yu-gi-whatever...
I totally agree. Kids shows from the 70's, 80's and 90's were MUCH BETTER---the shows today have no coherent plots and very little educational value and honestly just stink!
We must be in some sort of creavite slump right now. Transformers and G.I. Joe were among some of the action-ers with great toy tie-ins. I lovingly recall singing along to Denver the Last Dinosaur, and Dinosaucers. In the 90s we saw a surge from X-men and other popular comic/ videogame adaptations. Disney had some cool stuff with Rescue Rangers, Darkwing Duck, Tale Spin and Goof Troop.
Where are the Dougs of today? The Gargoyles? Even the ladies had stuff like My Little Pony and Care Bears.

When I was a girl (70s through to the early 90s) cartoons ruled!!
Bugs Bunny, Superfriends, Scooby Doo, Gummi Bears, Smurfs, Galaxy High,
Dangermouse, Jem, Transformers, Spiderman, Spiderman & His Amazing Friends, X-Men, Mighty Mouse, George of The Jungle, Dungeons & Dragons,
GI Joe, He-Man, She-Ra, Bullwinkle, Animaniacs, Freakazoid, Rainbow Brite,
The Flintstones, Popeye, Casper, Hong Kong Phooey, Charlie Brown, Daria, Aeon Flux, The Maxx, Tom & Jerry, Woody Woodpecker, Yogi Bear, Fat Albert, Science Court, Thunder Cats, Star Blazers, Speed Racer, Josie & The Pussycats, Thundar The Barbarian, Space Ghost, Huckleberry Hound, The Pink Panther...
Aahhh! Those were the good ol' days.

Duck Tales, wooohooo!
Yes, the cartoons back in the 80s and 90s were the bedrock standard to which every generation's cartoons will be measured against. Virtually every cartoon that came out during that time were instant classics. Aside from the great cartoons already mentioned, let's not forget Inspector Gadget, Dennis the Menace, Alvin and the Chipmunks, and (a little known cartoon that was one of my favorites) Dino Riders.
I would love to feel some nostalgia by turning on the tube and watching some Saturday morning cartoons, but the quality and content of the cartoons they have now are horrible and lack ingenuity. Yu-gi-no, Pokemon, and some variation of the Power Rangers is the only thing on anymore. I feel bad for the children of today

Seriously, what's on now is crap. It's violent and boring. I would still watch cartoons if they were still good. Remember Garfield and Friends, Muppet Babies, Tiny Toon Adventures, Loony Toons, Animaniacs, Tom and Jerry, Rocky and Bullwinkle, so on and so forth? Those were awesome andy funny. The stuff on now just SUCKS. Not funny or entertaining at all.

Haven't seen the new Spider-man series, but if anyone seriously thinks that today's cartoons are better, all they have to do is compare the new Transformers series currently on Cartoon Network, and the original. the new series is atrocious and can't hold a candle to the original.

I mostly agree with Rob-but I'd like to point out that us ladies weren't just watching My Little Pony or Care Bears. I was a fan of neither, but I sure tuned into Rocko's Modern Life, Doug, Ducktales, Darkwing Duck, Tailspin, Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers, Ahhh! Real Monsters, Recess, and the like. And, ok, the series of The Little Mermaid.

And I just forgot perhaps the most awesome of all: Inspector Gadget!

I tend to agree with this statement, though I would argue that it's very hard to judge the quality of modern children's shows objectively, since we're no longer in that demographic and therefore can't judge them fairly against each other. Although I have many fond memories of the shows I watched as a kid, I'm sure that many of them I wouldn't really enjoy now, beyond the nostalgia factor.

Looney Tunes was the best!

I still watch some cartoons - I would totally recommend Avatar the Last Airbender on Nick and Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends. I also kind of like Danny Phantom and The Fairly Odd Parents. The only one I'd put on par with any of the cartoons from when I was a kid though, would be Avatar. It's about as cool as my old favorites: Gargoyles, the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Tailspin, Rescue Rangers, The Animaniacs and Inspector Gadget

I have a young niece and nephew - both under a year old - and thank god I own Ducktails, Rescue Rangers, Animaniacs, etc on DVD. They'll be watching that stuff - none of this Pokemon stuff!

Oh Inspector Gadget! It was such a pure joy until it was lost in a poorly done movie. Boo trying to make our childhood cartoon memories into live action silliness.

As a kid who grew up with the genius of Looney Tunes and Rocky and Bullwinkle, its hard to compare anything that's around these days to those shows. They were just pure gold.

To Rob:
The Spiderman creators had to use a different style because they had a limited budget. Having ultra detailed models like in the FOX Spiderman '90s cartoon (which I consider the best of the lot) wasn't an option. With that aside, just like the recent Batman cartoon, I don't think it needs to be made. Both series already have excellent cartoons from the '90s that should be replayed anyway.
I wouldn't be so hard on anime though. When the style is used right on American shows (like in Teen Titans), it's amusing. Even in the golden days of cartoons, some of the best ones were adapted from Japanese fanchises, like Robotech (notably the Macross Saga), the original Transformers (with Beast Wars) and the Saturday morning Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon, which was quite dark and mature for a kids cartoon (but I could say that for most of the best ones). It's the butchered ones shown on Fox and WB that embarrass the genre and the kids watching it. Compare Adult Swim fare like Trigun, Cowboy Bebop and Fullmetal Alchemist to Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh and it's no contest.

I'm not going to list all the cartoons I think validate that, b/c it depends in what context? Are we talking kids cartoons or adult humor? Cartoons were sooo different "back in the day". Smurfs! Who can ever forget the little blue creatures? I can list them all(She-ra, He-man, Spiderman, TMNT, Rainbow Brite)but I won't.
If it's adult mature cartoons then, I'd have to say now. I don't wanna live in a world w/out Family Guy!!!!!
Fg, South Park, Simpsons...where else is a 30yr old supposed to get their fix?
I find arguements for both sides.
bklynproud 03/22/08
Yes Looney Tunes.....now THAT was what you call cartoons. How can you fault a bunny from Brooklyn, lol! Adult humor thinly disguised as kids entertainment. Bravo!
