I'll start by saying, I didn't want this throwdown -- I didn't create it, I clicked to disagree with it, but through oddball Internet script, I ended up being in favor of it. SIGH.

Anywho, I would have said that there are much worse PEOPLE on television who happen to be mothers, but as far as motherly duties go, Susan just sucks. Then there's Celia from "Weeds" who very well is one of the worst mothers on television, both in terms of being both a mother and a person.

So I basically agree with you, Melissa, in disagreeing with me, which isn't really me anyway. BAH to the Internet!

Well, I commend you on debating for debating's sake, then, Mr. Strong!

My first point is that, while Susan's "We're BFF!" take on her mother-daughter relationship is not fair to Julie (who more often than not is stuck in the mothering role), I wouldn't call her the worst mother on TV (neither would you, it appears!). I wouldn't even call her the worst mom on her own show. No, I don't mean Lynette, though she does get points for pretending her kid had cancer so she could get into a booked yoga class. I don't mean Bree, either, though it was pretty horrific of her to tell Andrew she was afraid he would go to hell for being gay.

I am talking about Edie. From the moment her son Travers (who lives with his father full-time) showed up on her door in Season 3, she had no use for him unless it helped her get closer to Carlos. Her behavior with him is deplorable--while Susan's with Julie is misguided and selfish at worst.

Let's begin!

SIGH. Time to forfeit, because I completely agree with your argument. Stupid Internet scripts.

Aw, that's no fun! I understand, though. It'd be tough for me to argue something I didn't really believe myself. Perhaps we will have a real throwdown sometime.

what about Bree, come on, she kicked one kid out for being gay, paid so little attention to her daugther that she got pregnant and slept with her teacher and has tried to use her son to get a contractor to fix her house. Bree is a terrible mother, cold, distant, and self-involved.

and what about the many terrible mothers on daytime soaps---Monica Quatermaine on "General Hospital" for one has to be among the worst mother's to ever live---she constantly favored her adopted son Jason over her natural son AJ, to the point she drove him to go back th alcholisom; alientated jason to the point he has disowned his entire family... Also Dorian Lord on "One Life To Live" is a horrendous mother; she drove Cassie so nuts she had a nervous breakdown and eventually moved to Georgia to get away from her; she hired someone to stalk and kidnap Adrianna just because she doesn't like her boyfriend and has on countless ocassions slept with her niece Kelly's boyfriends. Also the horrible things she did to ex-step daughter Viki continue to esculate, starting with hiding for years the fact that she knew viki was being molested by Victor Lord and repeatedly attempting to kill her.

and don't get me started on GH's Felicia Jones who has abandoned and neglected her children for so long that in real life she would have been arressted for child abuse by now. then of course there is Tracey Quatermaine who not only kidnapped Dillion from his father Paul but for most of his life dragged him from one city to another and treated him as cold and emotionless as she treated everyone else--then dumped him with a family he never knew because she was fed up with him; only to come back and post nude pictures of his girlfriend on the internet, because she was from a lower class than he was--and of course all the terrible things she did to her other son Ned, including running his girlfriend over.

tv is full of awful, horrible mothers but Susan is not one of them--susan acutally seems like a real mother and the relationship does seem rooted in care and concern.

I would also mention Whilemena on ugly betty, she clearly has no use for her daughter.
