I am admittedly a big fan of Ellen Degeneres, but Jon is the man!

So according to you, it's between only Jon Stewart and Ellen Degeneres? What of Billy Crystal, Steve Martin, Whoopi Goldberg, and Chris Rock? Stewart is not an actor in the sense that these other names are, and has nowhere near the same personality as Crystal, Martin, or Goldberg. Yes, Stewart is a nice guy and quite the witty politico, but does he do full-fledged Best Picture dance numbers like Crystal did, or wear complete Victorian garb as did Whoopi? Stewart is a great host, but NOWHERE near the best (especially if the timeframe here is the last decade).

I have seven words for you...
He brought Marketa Irglova back on stage.

Yes, he's a real gentleman. One admirable act is hardly enough argument on your part to support someone who bests a decade of fabulous hosting.

I'll sum up: I'm not saying Stewart is a bad host, nor is anyone else who has commented. But he's just simply not the best of the last ten years, and that's what this argument is about. Crystal, Martin, Goldberg, and Degeneres have all proved themselves much more interesting and watchable than Stewart. I'm not saying who alone IS the best -- I'm saying who isn't.

I have to agree with Mr. Strong - Billy Crystal is far and away my favorite host in the past 10 years. I did enjoy Jon, and I hope he does a good job tonight.

NO! No! No! Look at the ratings, Billy's show had 55 million, Jon's 30 million only. No comparison

I think that the numbers going down can be contributed just as much to viewers tiring of award shows in general as they can be to a particular host. The numbers for the Grammys were down this year too. Maybe we just don't want to see Hollywood types congratulating themselves anymore. The times they are a changin' and award show and the like need to catch up.

They're all funny to me.
Moononastring 02/25/08
The numbers going down is also probably due to the fact that there are so many more ways to get the results now - DVR, online, on YouTube...on every entertainment site and blog out there... it wouldn't make sense of ratings WEREN'T going down.

Also the movies that were nominated, except Juno, were not blockbusters. That too had an effect. If you didn't go see the movie you probably won't watch a 3 1/2 hour awards show to see if it will win. It's not like 10 years ago when Titanic was all the rage.

Although Jon is witty and funny I don't think he's the best Host in the past 10 years. The Oscars are getting a bit boring.....AND what's up with omitting mentioning Whoopi as one of the past hosts. First Woman and Black. - in addition to being very funny. SHAME on the Academy for also neglecting to include Brad Renfro from the memorial tributes. He was one of your own and should be remembered....SOMEONE DID NOT DO THEIR HOMEWORK.

Since the last ten years don't include the most impressive of people, it's easy to be a fan of a guy who brings someone back onstage to give her speech and still keeps the show under 3 1/2 hours. Kudos, Jon Stewart.
Tropical_Woman 02/27/08
The best? Not by a long-shot! Yes, he comes across as very professional and classy onstage. However, while he does provide snappy political commentaries and knows how to keep the presenters and the public happy, he is no showman. Billy Crystal's monologues are the stuff of legend. Not only are they funny, they are laugh out loud every time you remember them funny. He provided snappy comebacks and kept the show in a smooth flow.
I like Jon Stewart, but I LOVE Billy Crystal. My hope is that one day he will come back. Please, please, please!

Also, HE didn't bring Marketa back on stage -- the producer of the Oscars told him too.
