On television today, you will see over-done dramatizations of what a real family is. When Roseanne debuted back in the '88, the world grabbed onto this show with both hands, and didn't let go for 9 years, because it was so real. The reason it seems so real, is because we can all put ourselves in any of their shoe's, and still feel like we're a part of our own, real life family. These characters yell at eachother, make fun of eachother, express hate for one another, yet still drop everything if one of the family members is in need. The love of a family can make you angry, and can make you cry, but it can also make you laugh and smile- Roseanne embodies this exactly.

Great points Kev. Roseanne definitely provided great commentary on the nature of American families. However, I disagree with you that it's the most accurate depiction. Instead, in my opinion the most accurate depiction of a real American family is found in Married with Children. At least it's the most accurate depiction from a husband's perspective :)

What a poor argument, should have gone with The Simpsons...at least when Lisa walks in the room you don't hear loud "Wooos!" from the audience...

I like that you chose Married with Children as the counter! I would have thought you'd pick some TV drama. Rosanne was pretty realistic for a sticom, though.

As long as we can ditch that final season I'm all aboard w/Roseanne!

Oh, come on. Arrested Development, anyone?

I'm not sure what it says about us Counteragent but the Bluth clan is more familiar to me than the Conners.

I'm not sure we can really say what show is the most "accurate" portrayl of an american family considering their are so many different kinds of famalies liviing in our country--to me from my perspecitve a show like "family ties" or "growing pains" much more accurately reflects the typical american family--maybe the shows themselves were a pit too hokey and sappy but i feel the actual famalies portrayed came much closer to anything i've ever seen in real life than say "Roseanne" where all the characters lacked any sense of class, drive to succeed and "married with children" where all the characters were cliched stereotypes that were so far fetched they couldn't possibly come close to being real.

We can't say what is accurate becuase everybody's perspective is different and everybody's view of what american famalies are like is going to be totally different.

some would aruge that drama series like "my so-called life" or "life goes on" or "the wonder years" are more accurate than a sitcom like "roseanne" or even "family ties" which i cited above.

Roseanne had issues with unemployment, high school drop-outs, battered girlfiends, abortions, homosexuality, working poor people, angry confused kids, overweight people who enjoy eating, random acts of violence or unfairness happening to major characters (like being robbed, car accidents, bar fights, getting arrested, being drunk, etc.) trailer parks, going to the mall, constant bickering but the miracle of love keeping people from killing each other.

Yeah- Roseanne did okay, much better than Married With Children which was like a live action cartoon (But I watched & laughed). Family Ties and Growing Pains were way too clean and safe to be realistic. Those shows were dominated by the teen stars while Roseanne was about the adults more and the kids transitioning to adulthood.

KevJeff-how right you are!!!
No other show has portrayed a mother like Roseanne. Never before had a mom used dry wit & sarcasm to speak to her family & friends. I've seen every episode, all of em. Can recite lines. I know, but in a weird way, she's 1/2 the mother I aspire to be. Sounds weird but think: she loved her family, she loved her husband, her family loved her back. I'm very sarcastic also, and people often mistake it for being mean. It was the last REAL family, living in a real blue collar town w/ crappy jobs, and didn't end up arrested, in jail, in rehab...

"Accurate" is in the eye of the beholder. "Roseanna" didn't reflect my life at all.

Mar252005_812d_lg

And neither did "Roseanne" (oops!).

Oct192007_959_960_lg

i'm with you melissalane, Roseanne had never once come close to relfecting my life or lives of anyone i've ever met, which is why i cited Family Ties and Growing Pains, because those famalies seemed to have the same types of problems that me and my friends have---we didn't grow up rich, but weren't poor either, they were reflections of the typical middle class family whereas Roseann was about the working class family... and just because they were working class doesn't mean that perspective is more accurate because everybody has a different expierance.
