It's easy to win this argument by just listing his films and how consistently good they are, but I will not make it that simple on myself. There is no better director that exemplifies the auteur idea placed in directors. From placement of the camera, to lighting, editing, and etc. every frame of Scorsese's movies has his fingerprint on it. A crane shot may seem simple enough to most directors, but Scorsese uses this angle to tell a specific story within the frame. Film is art and if you've ever seen "A Personal Journey with Martin Scorsese Through American Movies" you know that Scorsese lives this, and that a movie can move a person for the rest of their life. John Ford is probably the greatest director ever and I doubt you would get much of an argument from Scorsese himself, but Scorsese is the current Ford. His movies don't make a lot of money, but occasionally they do and this was the same with John Ford. From his themes of betrayal, greed, lust, evil, religion, and etc. he can purely capture what may not be so pure about our society and the beauty surrounding that. He is the best, enough said, I'm out of room.

I appreciate your affection for Martin, but that's a tall order. Greatest living director? Wow. Pure opinion. (never mind that this is TVfan, not MOVIEfan)

Some people may find Scorsese's overusage of adult language a bit off-putting.
Also, he uses the same actors over and over.
He's great, but I think there are too many great directors out there to single out one solitary guy as the best. *cough* Spielberg *cough*

Based on a single movie, you could argue Francis Ford Coppola. He made The Godfather. Arguably the finest American Film ever made.

Based on body of work, you could argue Steven Speilberg. If you look at the best movies ever made, Steven has made like, 30% of 'em.

Based on popularity, you could again argue Steven Spielberg. He knows what audiences like, and he can deliver drama as well as thrills, and capture our imaginations.

Based on originality, intellegence, and craft, you could argue any one of these fine filmmakers.

Quentin Tarantino, Ang Lee,Michael Moore, Wes Anderson, PT Anderson, the Coen Bros, David Lynch, David Fincher, Gus Van Sant, Clint Eastwood, Oliver Stone, etc.

I think what I'm saying is that there is no BEST. But we have a handful of greats

With movie tickets at $12 bucks a pop I'm more than reluctant to watch movies where I'm uncertain I'll enjoy or get something out of. That said, I'd pay to watch a Tarantino movie without second guessing. His movies are creative, fun, entertaining, and just sheer genius. I place a premium over crisp, witty dialogue over anything else and nobody comes close to Tarantino when it comes to that.

Wow Rob good list but did ya mean to forget Woody Allen? It's interesting though as I get older who directs a movie has become much more important then who stars in it. For example it doesn't matter who is in the movie if it's made by Michael Bay, I'm not gonna see it.

Holy crap! How could I forget Woody! Good call, Rose! I'm sure there's alot more that I couldn't think up just then

I do love Scorsese, but under the realm of Rob's "etc." I'd like to remind everyone that Mike Nichols is still alive and kicking. Kicking ****, that is.

While Marty is definately a phenominal director, I wouldnt say that he is the greatest living director because you really can't say someone is the best. for someone to be "the best" they have to constantly make great movies. Now Marty has had many great movies, but on the other hand he has made a handful of average nothing special movies. Every director has their greats and their not-so-greats, so not a single one can be called "the best".
