So You Think You Can Dance: Cirque du Mark
Using some of the greatest songs of the 20th century and trying to add something new will be a dissaster for two reasons:
1-When you tamper with the best, the best you will get will be medicore
2-When you butcher the greatest rock bands songs-people will get mad
Using the Lennon/McCartney song book is going to be one of the greatest weeks ever for American Idol...or at least the most exciting.
Case in Point: David Archuleta's performance of "Imagine" was one of the best I've ever seen on American Idol. I watched it with my sister and witnessed her shed a tear during the small 2 min performance. And it wasn't just because it was David Archuleta, but because it was one of the most beautiful songs ever written. And I think we can all agree "Imagine" wasn't the only beautiful song ever written by either Lennon or McCartney.
Long have I waited for someone to reprise Ferris Bueller's performance of "Twist and Shout."... My prediction: David Hernandez
Sure, we might have to hear Amanda Overmeyer butcher "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" (which would be hilarious if that's what she picked)... but I'm sure the Idol Producers will wait until only the best singers are left before they make an attempt at performing Beatles music.
I can't WAIT for Beatles night!
The only reason they could use imagine is because it of course wasnt in the book. I think Jennifer Hudson's version could of topped David's. But groups are never a good theme, especially the Beatles. Even the groups that have tried to redue Beatles hits have bombed for one reason : because they are not the Beatles. We are going to be looking at some corny performances and i sure as hell wonder who is gonna coach them because i dont think Paul or Ringo will. Paul stills wants his book back and this could be insult to injury. And the comment about Amanda, her singing style and her sould is the only one who could possibly do the Beatles any justice.
First of all, of the 72 finalists we've already had on American Idol, only a handful of them have turned out to be successful artists. That being said, that means we've already watched 67 finalists perform songs from Artists who were way better than they were.
So why not have them sing songs we enjoy, like The Beatles? I'd much rather hear 12 Beatles songs than the other crap I had to listen to last year during "British Invasion Week" Gag...
Also, you just started two new arguments which I have to address first, which shouldn't be counted towards the voting, but I have mention them anyway...
1. What's with this Jennifer Hudson fixation? She was 7th in her season and got a resurgence when people found out she could sing a Dreamgirls song... which is EXACTLY what Lakisha Jones could do and yet no one's talking about her. Wait for Jennifer Hudson's acting performance in Sex and The City, and we'll all find out she has nothing except a typecasted role.
2. Amanda Overmeyer butchered Kansas. There's no way I trust her, her pants, or her gyrating legs with ANY Beatles song. If so, PLEASE tell me what song you think she would sing? I Am The Walrus?! Ku ku ka choo...
So before i go back to my original argument-Yeah I am the walrus would be perfect for Amanda and i am not fixated on JH, i just think that she did a better randition of Imagine.
Now back to my original argument. These people are supposed to make the songs "their own". When you do that to a Beatles song you will ultimately scew it up royally. They will make pop songs of some the best rock and roll songs in history. Basically the contestants are screwed this comming week. If they change the songs they will be butchering the song and if they sing it. it will never live up to original. I would rather listen to the originals because no matter how good they are they can never be the original. Look at what they did to queen, no one can ever measure up to freddy and that made that week really suck.

Here's a Question: Then why watch American Idol?
Why watch Blake Lewis sing "Shot Through The Heart?"
Why watch Katherine McPhee sing "Somewhere Over The Rainbow?"
Why watch Constantine Maroulis sing ???Bohemian Rhapsody?" (oh wait, is that a Queen song?!?)
Why watch Fantasia sing "Summertime?"
I could keep going... (btw, those 4 performances were all amazing and only one of them was done by an eventual winner, showing that anyone can put on a great performance)
And why do you keep saying if you do a Lennon/McCartney song you will ultimately screw up royally? Aren't we ALSO having an argument of who did a better job with "Imagine?" I'm confused how these go conflict with each other...
Covering the Beatles isn't THAT hard...it's not like their voices were too unique to copy (like Freddy Mercury can sometimes be)... That's why EVERY artists covers the Beatles (See: Rufus Wainwright, Ben Harper... or maybe this huge list

btw, could Overmeyer do this? doubt it...

What was the best cop show on TV from 1998 to 2008?

Well, Amanda could do "Hey Bulldog" or "Come Together". As long as the contestants use their imagination and don't pick the same over covered songs I'm willing to give them a chance. However, they had better leave well enough alone. I may be in the minority but I didn't like what little David did with Imagine.

Did anybody see the movie "Across the Universe?" I believe that the American Idol performance will be a few steps down from that movie.

A read an article that compared, "I'm Not There," to "Across the Universe," and why so many artists have been successful with Dylan songs, but Beatle covers are nearly always horrible. Dylan's own recordings were pretty sparse - he left it to others to take them to a different level. Hendrix's version of "All Along the Watchtower," for example. The Beatles used the studio as their lab -- you can't really take those songs further than the recorded versions, unless you do something horrible like make a hip-hop version of "Drive My Car," complete with video full of pimped-out Escalades.
As for releasing the catalog to this crop of Idol contestants because they are the best ever is complete BS. The owners are also opening certain songs for commercials -- new versions but I still get sick when I hear, "All you Need is Love," "Anytime At All," or "Hello, Goodbye," while I'm watching the morning news. In the words of Sir Paul, when it comes to the Beatles cataloge, just Let It Be.

Listen, this is an awful idea. The Beatles were genius, writing and performing some of the greatest music ever made. Giving the idols the opportunity to add their own take on this music would be a disaster. Let's face it, the majority of these idols are good singers. That's it. The Lennon/McCartney catalog should be respected and left alone. None of these American Idols will ever come close to achieving what the Beatles did with their music and they shouldnt be allowed to use the Beatles as their stepping stone. That muppet's version of Imagine was so-so. If Lennon were alive to today he would have HATED idol, and probuably would have thrown up upon hearing that cover.

I am a huge Beatles/John Lennon/Paul McCartney fan. I'm also an Idol fan, surprising to some of my friends. :) I think it could be cool to see a Beatles night, but this particular group of contestants are not that great this year. I have been pretty unimpressed with the performances so far and I have a feeling they will butcher The Beatles, which is what makes me nervous about it. I think better performers could make this better.

I think a Beatles night could be great once the competition gets down to 10 or 8 total remaining. Of course some people will probably murder a song or two, but isn't that the nature of Idol. I look forward to the Beatles cover show being either a) awesome or b) awesomely bad.

If you're looking for honest Beatles covers, look no further than the Smithereens' stab at the entire Meet the Beatles album: http://crawdaddy.wolfgangsvault.com/Article.aspx?id=5848
