So You Think You Can Dance: Cirque du Mark
There. Bring it On!
To begin this debate, let me point out that while Kirk was a maverick captain, sending his ship and his crew across the galaxy at his whim, Picard was disciplined and listened to what everyone had to say. As a result, his crew was more willing to do whatever it took not to let him down.
Kirk was a leader unlike any we have today. He leads by leading not by following. KIrk is the better captain with a wider base of knowledge. only Kirk reprogrammed the Kobayashi Maru thus making him the only starfleet commander in the history of starfleet to pass the test. Picard has done nothign like that.
Yeah, but, I mean, basically he cheated. Oh, I know, you'll tell me got a commendation for his solution of the test, right?
It'd be easy for me to say that Picard didn't have to resort to such 'original' thinking, but I think we saw in several episodes that Picard had a wild streak in his day as well.
Let me ask you this...
Let's say you were assigned to one of two ships, one captained by the shoot em up, do as I say (not as I do) leadership style of Kirk, with the understanding that the probability of death is far higher - especially if you're an ensign eager to go on your first away mission- or to Picard's ship, where he'll listen to the team, weigh the odds of success against the dangers, and see if he find a diplomatic solution so everyone can go home in one piece.
Which would you choose to trust your life with?
Kirk also always tried a diplomatic solutions. diplomacy is the first step always. kirk has a little less tolerance for those who mistake kindness for weakness. i understand the subtext. i know we are really discussing the headstrong leadership of a genral patton versus the colin powell politically correct approach. i would be honored to serve with either man. one thing i know for sure if i am captured by Kardasians i would rather have kirk working the rescue plan than to have picard exhausting all diplomatic channels first. Yes kirk took more risks but the entire idea of space exploration, in an century fictional or not, is going to be at its core risky. who woudl i trust with my life?? kirk any day of the week.
Forfeited Turn
really what else is there to say. both are honorable men. have served with distinction. it would be an honor to be on either crew. that being said i still think the way Kirk handles most situations i would fell better in his hands
What was the best cop show on TV from 1998 to 2008?

Yeah, I agree with outlatrbdr on this one. When Kirk or his team got captured he always got the job done in escaping or rescuing the team. As for Picard, I do believe, his first mate had more balls than he did in get things done.

Kirk will forever have a special place in my heart, but Picard has the edge in this throwdown. Picard was turned in to a Borg and managed to survive, he can hold his own against Q, and at the end of the day he can throw a mean punch when he needs to. Also let's not forget the episode where Picard is tortured and still insists, "There are 4 lights." Kirk would have buckled under any of those trials, but Picard simply goes to his quarters and has a cup of Earl Grey.

kirk would never have allowed any of those situations to get to the point that they did. he would have figured out how to stop Q by the end of episode 2. would never have been captured by the borg or Kardasian. these things would not have happened to a captain like kirk

Picard can use capitalization.
