I used to watch, but after Melinda Doolitle was robbed, I was sure the voting was rigged. Now I look back on this show, listening to fanatics talking about people like David Archuleta (honestly, he's the only one I know), and laugh. It's a shame people follow this show around like Catholics follow the Pope. It's not that big a deal, but it seems, by the look of the thousands of recaps, predictions, and blogs devoted to it, that American Idol isn't really worth the hype: where's Reuben? Justin? Taylor? Sure, a lot of them have made it, but many of the stars are lost. Why hang on to such an incompetent show?

I wonder if you would feel the same if there weren't so many Idol copycat shows out there. That's what sort of burned me out. That and the fact that I hate Ryan Seacrest. And Paula "I always have to be nice" Abdul. And all the dragging out they do on Results Night. And that it made Lost change timeslots! And all the punk kids who gets shots at fortune and fame while I bust my butt at work! Arg! (breathe, Rob) What was I saying? Oh, yea, I'm actually tryin to defend this show...
There's a reason this show is popular. American Idol is sort of the gold standard of what this country is all about. People get to make their dreams come true. Undiscovered talent can find exposure, and we the people get to decide who wins! That sort of interactive democracy was unseen on television programming back in 2001-2002.
I wouldn't go as far as to say there's a "Catholic-like" devotion to the show. The fact that the audience can root for complete strangers, cry over someone they don't even know, is compelling TV. It brings out the good in people everywhere. Even you, double_agent

Yes, and only ten thousand others are forgotten again. The fact that people are crying over a *rigged* singing competition is a bit sad. Wouldn't you agree? And by rigged, I mean Jordin Sparks had an extra makeup artist and a completely new staff making her look prettier than the competition by the final four. Coincidence that she won that year? I think not. I see what you see in the whole "dreams coming true" part, but is it legitimate? Are the people really deciding? They can say what they want to convince me: the voting isn't legitimate. And, on another note, during the auditions Simon brutally shuts down many competetors, reducing them to tears. Is that having your dreams coming true on TV? And about the people who just stand in line for hours to get on TV, don't get me started. I totally disagree: dreams come true on Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. Not American Idol.

Damnit, you're right! I'll be honest, I don't even know who Jordin Sparks is. I hate American Idol, and I haven't watched since Clay was screwed! There! Ya got me!
I didn't want to touch this throwdown because I completely agree with you.
But I still stand by what I said. The show is (sigh) something good in world full of bad. Besides, 30 million viewers can't be wrong. or can they....?

Based on what many of those viewers also watch (American Gladiators, Survivor, America's Next Top Model, Big Brother, Celebrity Apprentice, Top Chef), I doubt that they make the show any better. Besides, for every person whose dreams come true, there are at least 15 more that were shut down by Simon. It glamorizes fame, and that is the opposite of good, and it's not what people should be watching, in my opinion. End of story.

I think AI actually brings out the worst in people-that is, teaches us that what's valued above all in American society is fame, and that somehow even the William Hungs of the world are more important than your average Joe because he's been on TV.

I can't stand Idol. Just hearing about it makes me sick. And I don't watch the copycat shows either. I agree that the show celebrates mediocricy and cruel voyuerism. Yuck!
RobGrizzly 03/21/08
Simon ruining someone's dreams is the best part. I love that guy

Oh, and did I forget to mention Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader? I was shocked that it lasted more than three weeks. Ah, the American mind.
Salemskeeper 03/21/08
Why wouldn't a show like that be rigged? Are you saying there's np way they'd dupe the american public like that? Ha!!!

How can you not like idol ! We need some entertainment with all thats going on in this world, shows like idol are something to look forward to every week .There is a lot of television that dosen't even deserve air time!!

Have to agree with RobGrizzly-never will understand the Clay/Reuben deal-how in the world could anyone put Clay anywhere but first ? If based from a
pure talent standpoint, the track record of both these guys speaks for itself.
Too many of the contestants have been given too many props to keep them going. The really talented ones seems to be busted on in a regular way. I
really liked the voice of Kristie but even more I liked her attitude-it may have helped to to be on AI but she acted like she knew the deal from the start. We
will hear more of her in her world. As for AI, it's all about ratings and which network can get the most ratings. The real contestants are the networks and up to now are competing with no holds barred.
