So You Think You Can Dance: Cirque du Mark
Angel, Buffy and Firefly are the epitomy of good television. It doesn't matter that they are science fiction, the storylines are still relatable to the average human being. Television would not be the same if it wasn't for Joss Whedon.
I love Buffy & Angel. However there are 4 phenomenal producers/writers who have helped to create Television as well.
*Steve Bochco- Doogie Howser MD, Hill Street Blues, LA Law, NYPD Blue
***Norman Lear-All in the Family, One Day At A Time, The Jeffersons, Good Times, Maude
**David Chase-The Rockford Files, Northern Exposure, The Sopranos
****Aaron Spelling- Melrose Place, Beverly Hills 90210, The Love Boat, Dynasty, Charlie's Angels, The Mod Squad, Charmed, 7th Heaven
With just these 4 prolific talented men, I have listed close to 40 years worth of entertainment that continues to make money and win new audiences. Many of these shows have won loads of Emmys and have had scores of copycats and movies made to try to capitalize on their success. Some of these shows have helped create icons and set the standards of what is cool and fun to watch. Some of these shows are still in rerun today, because the shows remain interesting, relevant, and just plain entertaining.
And I didn't list all their works, just SOME of their more popular stuff.
I agree that Steven Bocho and Aaron Spelling have certainly contributed to television...especially since Joss Whedon didn't start creating shows until the mid 90's. I just think that his contributions with Buffy, Angel and Firefly are better than any other producers/writers out there. I think Greg Berlanti has done an excellent job as well, I just don't think that anyone has came close to the genius that is Joss Whedon.
Forfeited Turn
To sum up...I would definitely consider Joss Whedon's projects to be more creative and influential than any other single creator out there. I know his shows definitely changed my life, and I will always love the guy for that.

What was the best cop show on TV from 1998 to 2008?

Larry David has gotta get some recognition. CYE is alright, but Seinfeld was the best sitcom ever.

*cough* J.J. Abrams *cough*
hmorsey 03/21/08
Agreed, J.J. Abrams pretty much kicks **** as well since Felicity, Alias, Lost and What About Brian are all shows that I have seen every episode of...I just dont love or feel as connected to those shows as I do to Buffy, Angel and Firefly...

Joss Whedon is brilliant. He did things that television has never seen before, such as the buffy episode, "Hush." Honestly, how many people oculd do an entire episode with no dialogue and leave the viewer on the edge of their seats? Answer: One and only one person, Joss Whedon. And Firefly was the pinnacle of innovative (and under appreciated) viewing. A sci fi western that includes a train heist?! It doesn't get any better than that. Let's also not forget that Joss loves to grace the screen with women who can really get out there and kick some butt. I love Joss. He's a gift to television viewers everywhere, so wherever you are Joss, thank you!
hmorsey 03/21/08
I completely agree. It was the positive female characters in his shows that first got me to tune in. And I'm glad that Hush got the Emmy nom, giving Joss some praise he clearly deserved. Although I like Angel best out of all his shows, I definitely agree that Buffy and Firefly were innovative as well as being underappreciated as well.

Let's not forget how the writers and produces that have come out from under Joss. Marti Noxon, Doug Petrie, Jane Espenson, David Fury, Drew Greenberg, Drew Goddard, David Greenwalt, & and that's not all. He's influence is all across TV. I can't tell how many times in the past two years a director, writer, or produced name has scroll across the screen and I think well no wonder I like the show.

If you had said best of the past 10 years I'd find your argument more reasonable, although I'd still side with J.J. Abrams. But seriously, TV has been around for a lot longer than Buffy-all of the prolific producers mentioned by HoneyBunny are important, plus I'd throw in Lorne Michaels, Lucille Ball, and Mary Tyler Moore, plus others I'm too lazy to think of.

I love Buffy, I own the entire series on DVD and still enjoy the show. That being said, I also own the entire series of Seinfeld, Arrested Development (short as it was), and Friends to name a few. I have never forgiven NBC for cancelling Freaks & Geeks either. Some pretty big names are behind all of those series and I watch everything they've created as they've all proven themselves to be industry giants.
demetrithegreek 03/21/08
I can't get through a single episode of Buffy or Angel.
hmorsey 03/22/08
wow...ive never heard anyone say that before and I must admit it makes me sad
randomlove36 03/24/08
I'm torn because although I totally agree that Joss is one of the most brilliant minds I can't turn my back on JJ Abrams so I'm not voting in this one, but you guys have a great debate going on
Moononastring 03/24/08
This one was so tough...it's such a toss-up (for me) between Joss and JJ. In the end, I had to go with Joss. I don't know why but his shows just "stick" with me more than JJ's shows, though I love lost and am a huge Alias fan. But given the choice between Buffy/Angel/Firefly or Lost/Alias/Felicity, I would go with Joss.
There has been a lot of great TV before either of these guys came along, but nothing on TV has ever resonated with me the way their shows have.
Melissalane 03/24/08
Buffy's my all-time favorite show, but I don't know if that's enough for me to say Joss's shows are the best television has ever seen. I can't vote against Joss, though, so I'm staying out of this one. I'm having a blast reading all these comments, though!

I seriously don't get how this has become a showdown between J.J. Abrams and Joss Whedon. TV did exist before 1997, guys.
ConfidenceMan 03/24/08
I definitely do love those shows, but I wouldn't call them the best that television has ever seen.
scarsandstories8 03/24/08
it did exist before 1997, but the two running mates happen to have come afterwards.
although i do like jj's work, whedon's is so much more original. buffy the vampire slayer? and then angel... a series about a vampire with a soul? and firefly... a western in the sky? who can pull this off?--- joss whedon.
scarsandstories8 03/24/08
by the way... is honeybunny ever going to respond? haha. the people that have commented in jj's favor have his work cut out for him.
spikefan08 03/25/08
The only reason that Joss and Buffy don't get the same mainstream approval is because of the movie, plain and simple. They will never get the respect they deserve and that makes me sad. While I am a fan of Lost, I would trade it in a second for a new season of Buffy. And lets be real here, any one who can sell a mid-season replacement show about a blond air-head, cheerleader named Buffy that fights vampires is a genius. Especially after that horrific movie...
hmorsey 03/25/08
I agree with you on trading in Lost for a new season of Buffy...but to tell the truth I would do that for every single one of my shows that are on the air now...while I like Lost, Heroes, Brothers and Sisters and One Tree Hill...I would trade in all four of them for just one season of Angel, Buffy or Firefly...although I think that the fact that in this throwdown Joss Whedon is taking on every other creator out there...and at this point in time, is winning...I believe that shows that Whedon certainly has a cult following...which he completely deserves...

Whedon for life!
