Osment did amazing not only by the standards of him only being 11 at the time of filming. He made his character completely believable and I believe he, hands down, should have won the Oscar for Best Actor in a Supporting Role that year.

Great movie, great performance, but not Oscar-worthy over the other gentlemen nominated that year. I do "believe" he played a great 11-year old because he was 11.
In my book, Tom Cruise should have smoked Michael Caine for his performance in "Magnolia". You have to remember that at the time, we didn't know what loopy Tom was like. We didn't know how much that character was like his real life Scientoto persona.
So now, you might say that it was easy for Cruise to play himself, but I say hell no my friend. In the media, for years and years he had to play All-American normal good guy Tom. Then to bust into this role and let his true freak flag fly (without us even knowing it at the time), it took all he had within him. Amazing guts and even more amazing to see it all play out years later on Oprah and in the same media that once adored him.

There are honestly few moments when I'm watching a movie, and I think... "Wow! He/she is a good actor." During this movie, however, that's all I can think about! Of course, I think that there are a lot of great things about the movie-- specifically the ending, but Osment did such an amazing job! His performance was not just believable, but UNbelievable. He may not have displayed the best acting ever, but I certainly believe that that year he deserved the supporting actor award.
Whether or not Tom was loopy then doesn't effect the fact that it was a good acting job. Sure, it was good (I would at least hope so as he was nominated), but I simply believe that Osment's was superior.
You can't play a great 11-year-old by being 11. I honestly don't think that anybody could have done a better job playing Osment's role. He actually managed to give the audience chills and delivered a speech talked about almost, if not just as much, as Mel Gibson's in Braveheart.
Plus I believe it's harder to portray a kid who can interact with dead people than Cruise's. But, at least we agree that Caine should not have won. :)

Apparently if you don't reply by a certain time, they forfeit for you.
Eff you EW and eff Haley Joel Osment. Wait, actually, I think I just passed him at the drive through. Damn good guy. Obesity rules.
