Alias is the reason I want to work in television, I watch Lost because of Alias and am so glad I do, and I'll get sucked into Fringe next season. When he's really in control of things, can this guy do any wrong?

I have seen both Lost and Alias and said no to them both. I felt that Alias was a bit to violent for Network TV and Lost is pretty much that. LOST thanks to ABC kicking it around as well as making it dissappear from the schedule for weeks on end. I hate watching a show like that.
As for Fringe, I don't know to much about it as of yet to make a decision about it.

I don't find Alias too violent for network TV at all. It's positively tame compared to The Sopranos and on par with plenty of what's on network TV today. And with the exception of fall 2005, when it aired Thursdays at 8, it was always on at 9 or later, which is sufficiently out of the way of youngsters. And I think Lost has proven itself to have more direction than most shows on TV, especially with the fixed end date and flashforward formula. Overall, I think the quality of Abrams' shows is unparalleled. Writing, acting, directing, editing, cinematography, set-everything is absolutely top-notch.

randomlove36 makes a good point--since violence is in the world, why not on TV? I can't even count how many times I've discussed this in various classes; if it can be shown on the news, I'd say it's fair game for primetime. But that's a whole other topic, we're talking about the awesomeness that is J.J. Abrams here!
I have this strange feeling that you're going to forfeit your turn again, so instead of restating my own points about how great Abrams work is, I'm gonna let the work itself do that for you.

I mean, I watched What About Brian because JJ Abrams was involved in it. That's all I have to say.
RobGrizzly 03/14/08
LOL what about Brian! And Six Degrees! ugh. Yep. Looks like we'll follow him anywhere (for now)

The Sopranos in not now (A&E) nor was it ever (HBO) on network TV. Not to nitpick, but that can't be an effective counterargument. And hey don't forget felicity!
The Counteragent 03/14/08
I was wondering if my opponent would bring up What About Brian and/or Six Degrees, both of which I suffered through 10 minutes of because J.J. was in the credits. But he didn't create those shows-he was just brought in to exec produce because of his fantastic track record and the actual creators apparent lack thereof. So basically, those don't count.
Also, I'm well aware that The Sopranos has never been on network TV. I'm just aware that they've hacked up people and put the pieces in bowling bags so basically, Sydney Bristow doing very painful things to Suit and Glasses is hardly of shock value to anyone over the age of say, 14.

Right, but there is a big chunk of people who don't get cable b/c of the violence (i like to call them my parents!) but who would perhaps watch alias cuz 'anything on network tv can't be all that bad!'
The Counteragent 03/16/08
Hey, if the FCC approves, apparently it's not too bad, from a legal standpoint at least.
Oh yes, I'll defend Alias until I'm blue in the face. Hell, I can even defend season 4 if I have to. Anyone remember Sloane Clone? Dear god.

Thought not every one of the shows he has been associated with has been amazing (What About Brian, Six Degrees), I do 100% agree that any show created by Abrahms is at least INITIALLY worthy of attention. There are few writers/producers whom I would say that for...Joss Whedon maybe the only other one who I would DEFINITELY watch at least in the beginning.
hmorsey 03/21/08
I like what about brian...but couldnt get into Six degrees....love felicity and alias and like lost in its first and current season...
randomlove36 03/24/08
Anything J.J. touches is gold, I'd follow his work anywhere! Violence is in the world, why shouldn't it be on tv?

i wouldn't say any show he creates is worth my time--because it's not true... I loved "Felicity", liked "What About Brian" and tolerated "Six Degrees" but find "Lost" boring and horrible and found "Alias" even more boring and grating to watch. so no, not any show, maybe i'd say "some JJ Abrams shows are worth watching", but would not say Any.
