So You Think You Can Dance: Cirque du Mark
The Flash Forwards are genius. They consistently answer questions while bringing other ones up, something that no season before it has done. I've been on the edge of my seat every single episode. It is exactly what was needed to get Lost out of its slump.
I would argue that while this season is incredible, the first season was just fantastic. Now that we're used to the flashbacks, we've grown tired of them, and flash forwards appear to be the great new invention that has saved the show -- but don't forget that almost four years ago, when the show premiered, it was the content of the flashbacks that were equally as inventive and intriguing.
The first season brought up questions that went unanswered, yes, but it was back in a time when questions were welcome. Season two, on the other hand, was arguably unsuccessful because it didn't offer anything new from season one (more, more, more questions, but that's another throwdown). Season one had all the intrigue and character development (BOONE!) that made the show so fantastic, and keeps us glued to the TV today.
Quite frankly, if season one wasn't as great as it was, nobody would have continued watching.
I think season one was excellent as well. And I enjoy flashback immensely...as long as they are of characters that I enjoy. And with so many characters being added every season to this show a lot of the original characters are being pushed further and further into the background to make way for new characters. Season one is the only other season that I actually wanted to see the next episode for every week. I just dont think it had the same shock factor or answered as many questions as the greatness that is season 5 does. Kate's episode this season had a sensational ending. As did Sun and Jin's and then Michael's this season. Episode after episode resolves so many questions while still keeping my interest in the show. And the new characters that they added are actually interesting as opposed to the last few season where a lot of characters I could care less about were added.
But if I may point out, you said a lot of the original characters are being pushed back to make room for new ones. Back in season one, nobody was pushed back because nobody tried to push them back. THEY were the only characters.
Also, I agree that season four (it's four, not five) answers questions, yet I think a bigger shock was the posing of the questions, rather than the answers. The shock in finding a polar bear, in hearing about 'Others,' in seeing the possibility of a monster, in finding a hatch?! Finding another facility on this island is nothing new, whereas back in season one, the idea of an underground hatch was about the most inconceivable thing you could imagine.
Back in season one, every character was new, and every character worked.
I'm glad we both love Lost, though. :)
I agree about season one being good and not pushing the characters to the back like season 2 and 3 do. I was just commenting on why I didn't care for season 2 and 3. And this is main reason why we differ because I much prefer resolution than I do new questions popping up. I think season one would have been better if they ever answered any questions about the island, which they really didn't, which is why a lot of people didn't care for the season one finale. I agree about loving the mutual Lost love ;)
True -- I'm more of an "OH MY GOD WHAT THE EFF THAT WAS AN AMAZING CLIFFHANGER!" kind of guy, whereas you prefer the resolutions to the questions I love.
This one's just up to personal opinion, I suppose. I think the shock factor is the same in answering questions and posing them... just depends on which you like better.
Vote away, spectators!

This season has been great, but I feel Season 1 is still Lost's strongest (followed by the second half of season 3)

I couldn't possibly pick just one season: it's all too good.

I'm torn on this one, but I'm going with Season 4. When you read a good novel, the beginning gets you hooked, but it's the middle where all of the action is that makes the book wonderful. I look at Lost like a giant novel and we're now getting to that awesome climax that makes you not want to stop reading/watching.

Too soon to judge. Talk to me at the end of May.
