Wow...I am really surprised that Welcome to the Dollhouse is going to premiere on Fox in the fall considering Whedon and Eliza Dusku's track record with Fox. They treated Firefly horribly, airing the episodes out of order and cancelling it way before its time, and they treated Tru Calling just as bad. Im thinking that Welcome to the Dollhouse will join the ranks of Firefly, Tru Calling, Dark Angel, Point Pleasant, Wonderfalls, Reunion, and many others by being prematurely cancelled by FOX and I gotta say I'm surprised that he's even giving Fox a chance

First, the title's "Dollhouse", I believe. "Welcome To The Dollhouse" was a mid-90s movie and completely unrelated.

Second, where should it run? I'll buy into Fox's poor track record with new series, canceling them before their time, but if not them, who? ABC probably would just see it as a new attempt at Alias and NBC would be hesitant to take on something even remotely similar to "Bionic Woman". Besides, it wouldn't really fit into those networks' public images, or CBS's for that matter, that they try so hard to craft.

No, the only network apart from FOX that seems like it would accept this show the way Whedon wants it is the CW, and it's not without its drawbacks. You either go with Fox, who might cancel you early if you don't get over 10 million viewers per episode, or you go with CW, who is happy to get 5 million but doesn't have the pocketbook of or reach as wide an audience as the other networks.

Third, I doubt people go to a network and say, "Hey. I've got a show, and I want it on your network." You lose your bargaining position. You pitch it to all and take the best offer.

My bad, you're right about the title. Never seen the movie but I must have read an article lately about it with that as the title and it just stuck. I think that Fox by far has the worst track record with new shows....I would prefer it to basically go anywhere other than Fox....the CW would be good...I wouldn't care if it would mean less of an audience or less of a budget...Buffy and Angel got along just fine on the WB. They still have a very strong cult following. The CW would be the best place for it, I think. ABC would be good as well...and I don't think they would see it as an Alias ripoff...unless having a female lead character and being in the sci-fi genre would count it as such...

I'm not really saying Fox is the best choice, just that apart from the CW it wouldn't really fit in with the other networks. I do think ABC could see it as an Alias ripoff. Besides, I can see ABC deciding to wait until Lost finishes its run before starting a new sci-fi drama with series-long mysteries. I think all the networks may be a little leery of such a show following Lost's loss of viewers and Heroes's lackluster sophomore season.

Not that I agree; I think the writing is largely to blame for the Heroes slump and, to a lesser extent, the dwindling ratings on Lost. If anyone has the chops to create and sustain a good serialized drama, it's Whedon. It's just that I can see TPTB discussing the show after it was pitched and deciding that they don't want to pony up the dough for a genre they feel like the viewers are bailing on.

I agree that the CW would likely have little problem with the show's image or financing. I like Whedon's shows. I also agree that Fox has a terrible track record regarding early cancellations. But I'm guessing it was Whedon who made the pitch and subsequent sale, and I'm going to defer to his judgement here.

I was just hoping that it would be on a network where it would actually stand a chance...I'll still watch it because Whedon is excellent, I just don't have high hopes for it lasting very long.

I think, given the existing fan base from Whedon's previous work and the fact that everyone familiar with BTVS knows Eliza Dushku, that it stands quite a good chance of staying. I trust the material to be engaging; everything else Whedon's done has been entertaining and original. It all depends on if it draws enough viewers to meet Fox's dubious expectations. IF all the Buffy, Angel, & Firefly fans come out and watch, IF it draws in some more people, IF it has a time slot that is decent and without some major competition, then I think it has a good chance at a long run. Don't count it out before it's even begun production.

BTW, it wouldn't surprise me if Whedon, knowing Fox's history of premature cancellations, insisted that he retain all rights so he could shop it to the CW et al in the event of cancellation.

Fox=Cancellation.
I'll take crappy special effects over only half a season. Best example for me is Point Pleasant. Stopped it at it's peak. And really, what was up with Dark Angel? How did it make sense to cancel that? You just never know with Fox.

Mar72003_699_lg

Im hoping Fox doesnt add SCC to its list...I really hope that show gets renewed....

I still miss Reunion. That show only had to go one season, and they couldn't even give them that!

Fox pretty much sucks at life...

Peter Griffin: [after "Family Guy" returns to Fox with new episodes, after a few years off the air] Everybody, I got bad news. We've been canceled.
Lois Griffin: Oh, no! Peter, how could they do that?
Peter Griffin: Well, unfortunately, Lois, there's just no more room on the schedule. We've just got to accept the fact that Fox has to make room for terrific shows, like "Dark Angel", "Titus", "Undeclared", "Action", "That '80s Show", "Wonder Falls", "Fastlane", "Andy Richter Controls the Universe", "Skin", "Girls Club", "Cracking Up", "The Pitts", "Firefly", "Get Real", "Freaky Links", "Wanda at Large", "Costello", "The Lone Gunmen", "A Minute with Stan Hooper", "Normal, Ohio", "Pasadena", "Harsh Realm", "Keen Eddie", "The Street", "American Embassy", "Cedric the Entertainer", "The Tick", "Louie", and "Greg the Bunny".
Lois Griffin: Is there no hope?
Peter Griffin: Well, I suppose if all those shows go down the tubes, we might have a shot.

Mar72003_699_lg

haha, i love that quote...im surprised fox let it air...

Jan132006_858_lg

I agree Melissa. All Fox had to do was give Reunion ONE full season to finish the mystery and then they could've ended it. The fact that it ended in a great cliffhanger (i.e., the detective getting run over by a car) angers me even further.

I like that Family Guy quote as well. I guess Fox felt guilty for letting it slip by, so they took it with a grain of salt.
