So all around the tube i flip i see the same teen girl over and over again! Tall , blonde (yes veronica is blonde) and modle worthy but not too bright. Then i watch Veronica Mars. She is petite, witty and tough. Yes she has sex but not without feeling or manipulation; she cares about people even though she doesnt want to. I love her character because she is someone that i can say i want to be like her. She has an integrity that isnt seen by any teen female!

So I can only assume that you never watched Buffy? Because there are 2 on that show right there with Buffy and Willow.
Or there was Angela Chase, please don't forget her, she was perhaps the realest (is that a word?) female character on tv.
They were all smart, funny, opinionated women who I would be proud to have my children (even the boys) look up to.

Ok Buffy was a strong character as well (yes i have all seasons of both shows) but Veronica Mars started off a strong character it wasnt until the 2nd season where Buffy really started to mature. People seemed to trust veronica right off the start where only a limited amount trust buffy. Veronica also had a lot to deal with in the first season (being raped, the death of her bff and the subsequential allienation of her /peers) where as Buffy dealt with the paranormal. Both were allienated by their peers but while buffy was maturing, veronica was mature way beyond her years

Perhaps that's what makes Buffy that much more interesting to me...she evolved.
Instead of being this built in wonderful character of wonderfulness she had to learn how to ****, well, job. Evolution is the mark or true character to me. She learned from her mistakes and went forward dealing with all of those things in a way I only WISH I'd been able to. Same with Willow, started out as such a meek girl on the side and grew into the 2nd most powerful (some would argue most powerful, but that's for another throwdown!) woman in Sunnydale. I would also argue that the plotting of the two shows were such that we were supposed to grow with Buffy while VMars was already an established character. We don't see her deal with the death of her Mom or the fallout from her Dad, we see Buffy through those. Maturation.
Let's not forget Angela Chase. She only had one season to touch the lives she did.
In terms of evolution there are tons of television characters that could fight for this crown, Summer Roberts evolved from a vapid waste of space to a woman who went to Brown and wanted to save seals...how great was that.

Buffy though turned into an adult show in the 4th season, that is when her character really evolved. Actually the same with willow. She was stretching her wings throughout the 3rd season but it wasnt until the 4th where she became her own /person. Veronica was given three seasons, i believe in those three she showed a maturatity beyond Buffy (I am not a buffy hater believe me). It would of been interesting what they made of her after that. As i said this throw down is not about the best woman on tv but the best teen and as a teen Veronica mars showed us more de/pth and was a more complex character than buffy (minus the whole demon killing thing). As an adult we do not know because unfortunately the stupid network cancelled VM. Death is after she is teen. Actually if there was a next season there could be a big fall out with her father (VM) due to honesty and integrity.

Well if season 3 of VM is when she's a freshman in college, that's season 4 of Buffy, so there goes that adult show comparison...i don't know where everyone else's age fell/fall, but I wasn't out of my teens until my 3rd year of college, roughly season 6 of Buffy.
There is really no way you can say that Buffy didn't go through as much, if not more on screen as Veronica did. We saw a sister, a death (a major one and many many minor ones), heck even Buffy died a couple times in there, let's see VM come back from that! Twice! It's impossible to separate Buffy from the demon killing...she is the slayer after all.
Besides VM is a spawn of Buffy, without BtVS there would have been no show VM, let alone the character VM. Plus Kristen Bell the actress is better than SMG the actress. True mark of a character is their abilty to shine past their portrayers weaknesses.
Enough with the Buffy though, I think the far more important factor is that while those 2 may be neck and neck, there are many OTHER qualified candidates out there. We can't forget that this isn't a 2 horse race. I argue Buffy because you picked up on her, but please ANGELA CHASE, she deserves to make this a 3 way race.

This conversation begins and ends with Bufy.

I love Veronica Mars, but I do have to give Buffy the edge here. That show (and character) defined the HS/teenage experience.
The Counteragent 03/26/08
I must support Veronica Mars simply because I'm tired of people talking about Buffy. I need to rally some Alias fans one of these days, I swear.
OzzieAlThor 03/26/08
"Being tired of Buffy" isn't a very well though out argument.
loglady 03/26/08
hey--big alias fan here, but alas sidney isn't really a teen character!
hmorsey 03/26/08
This is so hard...I love both shows...and I prefer Buffy the show to Veronica Mars...and Buffy is one of my favorite characters on Buffy...but Veronica is funnier and snarkier...I have to wait til all the arguments are done to make my choice...I almost took this throwdown and was going to pick Buffy, lol...but I was torn...
The Counteragent 03/26/08
I'm well aware that Sydney (not Sidney) Bristow is not a teen character, I only meant that it'd be nice to have some Alias fan solidarity.
And Ozzie, if you're going to quote me, do it right, and please explain to me what a "though out" argument is.
HoneyBunny 03/26/08
I've never watched Veronica Mars. But Buffy isn't my ideal teen girl either.
I worshiped Angela Chase and her friends from My So Called Life. Outstanding acting and writing.
I loved the cartoon character Daria from the early GOOD MTV animation years.
I even enjoyed watching the girls from the sitcom Roseanne, who blossomed into real teenagers who argued and had sex and got drunk and cut class and worked crappy jobs and dropped out of college and got pregnant and got married - showing interesting lives filled with young women who explored the possiblities, made mistakes and moved on, but were wiser from their experience.
Heck, I still remember the geek girls from Square Pegs, starring a very uncool Sarah Jessica Parker! I thought they did a fair job representing the non-glamorous teen girl.
Veronica sounds nice but BEST ever on TV, I don't think so. Do you mean just for her generation? Most teen shows now have **** and vamps. So it's pretty easy to say the lone strong female character is the best. Is Veronica Mars still on TV? Strong teen girls certainly don't dominate the television universe, never have.
loglady 03/26/08
hmorsey--wouldn't you say much of the wonderful funny and snark on VM is a direct product of the funny and snark that Buffy had brought! Buffy had already wrapped when VM was on (maybe one year of overlap?), almost a little blonde stepchild to buffy!
counter--knew you'd be aware that sYdney (my bad!) was not a teen, just wanted to get a shout out to the Alias love that seems a little lacking...
hmorsey 03/26/08
Loglady--yeah I only tuned in to VM becuz I heard of all the buffy comparisons...and basically the only similarity i saw was great writing and main female characters with great wit...so yeah VM's wit is very similar to Buffy's and Buffy came first...but its still so hard for me to pick. I will wait til you are both done with your arguments :)
hmorsey 03/26/08
And as for the Alias comments....I love Alias and would be down for some Alias throwdowns :)
hmorsey 03/26/08
Both of you gave great arguments and I'm still completely torn...both Veronica and Buffy are great female characters...I'll have to think on it more and vote soon.
LisaD 03/26/08
You know what i hate the CW. It has cancelled some of the best shows out there for fluff. Loglady good arguments...i love both shows , big fan of both. I still miss my VM though. Buffy ended amazingly but VM left you hanging, again stu/pid CW.
charinator 03/27/08
Kristen Kruk's character is the best looking teenage female on TV...wait what was the question?
OzzieAlThor 03/27/08
"Being tired of it" was the jist of your point. Or forget it, Jack Bauer is better then Chuck Norris because I am tired of the Chuck Norris jokes.
