So You Think You Can Dance: Cirque du Mark
I looked forward to Monday nights just to watch this show. It might not have been perfect, but as far as first year shows go, it was really, really good.
Let's hope FOX doesn't hit that big red "cancel" button as they're accustomed to doing.
WHO'S WITH ME!?!
Obviously not me. I know Whitney received a lot of tongue lashing for some of her critiques, especially with the episode where we constantly shifted into Derek Bag's future (which I thought did a horrible job with the time shifting), but I have to side with some of her trepidation. Ever since the lukewarm pilot, the show never shook off the feeling of being little brother to the movies. The writing, though sometimes decent, was mostly shoddy and the action never reached the pinnacle of the films. That wasn't any more painfully obvious than in the season finale when the FBI Agent Ellison went to get Cromartie in that motel room (on a side note, the fact that I had to look up half these names shows my aloofness to the characters besides Sarah, John and Cameron). That entire scene was supposed to pass off as 'artistic' but instead, it screamed 'budget cuts.' One SWAT member plunging into the pool...okay, cool. But doing it repeatedly with no variation? Commence eye rolling.
Granted, during some of its slower moments, it's not so bad, but I can't shake the feeling I only watched it because I was bored on Mondays during the strike (RIP 24 2008). I wouldn't miss it.
Well I don't think the motel room scene screamed "budget cuts" more so than it did "TV-13"
Again, I'm not saying the show was perfect. But for a first year show, and having to try and meet the expectations of the movies, it did pretty good. The show has great value and is worth bringing back for at least one more year.
I don't buy the TV-14 excuse, especially after seeing Cromartie augmenting a dead guy's skin with blood everywhere (which was pretty cool and creepy). This is the same network that showcased [Prison Break's] Michael Scofield's toes getting amputated from lawn clippers by Abruzzi and an agent on 24 [season 2] getting tortured by a buzz saw, and now they're holding back from graphic violence? Nah.
I don't expect perfection, but I want something that keeps me coming back. T:SCC doesn't do enough for me to warrant that (unlike the recently departed Jericho). There's no real tension in the events that unfold like the films and I have no emotional investment for any of the protagonists, which is further hampered by the fact that we know where John and Sarah end up anyway. Oh and don't get me started on the bad subplots, like that suicidal high school blond.
Lastly, while I admit it's a bit unfair to bring this up because of the strike ending this season early, the cliffhanger T:SCC left us was the biggest insult to the audience's IQ. A car explosion with Cameron inside? After seeing the Terminators self repair all season long, is anyone worried that she might die? I didn't think so.
The bigger cliffhanger to me was not whether Cam would make it out of there--in fact, it didn't even cross my mind--the bigger question is what is that guy gonna do to Sarah and John, and whether Cam would fix herself in time to save them.
As for the "we know where John and Sarah end up anyway" line. No, we don't. If that were the case, and fate and destiny were unavoidable, then why send back robots from the future to alter the past in an attempt to change the future? That is the whole essence of time travel, and is what makes the Terminator franchise so compelling. We know what's supposed to happen, but with both sides time traveling in attempt to alter the future, we don't know whether the future, as it is currently known, will ever happen at all.
The ultimate question is whether this show, for what it's worth, is your cup of tea or not. I really wanted this to be a petition more so than anything, to see where all the T:SCC fans are and how many would actually like to have this show back.
When the Terminator producers aren't shy about admitting T:SCC takes place between T2 & T3, while T4 launches the apocalyptic future that Sarah and John tried to prevent, it does affect how I see T:SCC. Ironically enough, that was one big reason I wanted to view it; to see how John morphs into the charismatic leader we'll hopefully see in T4. Unfortunately, I don't see that on this lukewarm show.
I wanted to like T:SCC, I really did. Occasionally, it showed signs of being decent and despite my irritation with several plot points, it wasn't always bad. However, not once did it convince me that it's a smart action show like some of you viewers claim (the car explosion undermined the claim for me). At the end of every episode, none of them made me want to return, but I kept giving it a chance anyway. After seeing how the season ended, I don't think I will.
To answer your last statement, from the votes and comments, it sounds like enough people enjoy it to warrant a 2nd season. Its ratings are on par with Prison Break's these days and that got renewed...again. But whether you like T:SCC or not, we can all agree that for the franchise's sake, it doesn't overstay its welcome.
What was the best cop show on TV from 1998 to 2008?

As someone who hasn't ever seen a Terminator movie, I actually found I really liked this show. I hope it sticks around for at least another season.

I think the show really gained some momentum after the introduction of the Derek character and I hope it sticks around for another season.

You have to have another season of T:SCC. The writers wrote this series correctly. You had the slow start were everyone could get to know the characters. Then you had the story line develop when they found out about the Turk. The season finale was great because it left us with a look at "The Man". Also, John, Derek, and Sarah have finally sewn the gap between each other to make the group much stronger and more organized. Now with everyone on the same page, I can talk about Cam. Summer is doing an excellent job as playing the terminator. She has her facial expression down and her witt has a kind of Arnold likeness. We still need to know more about her and John connection. If the bring it back Season 2 could be awesome.
