Why?
1) The absence of Joel Surnow
2) The extended period inbetween filming
3) Viewers have to wait a year to watch
4) Writers' minds sapped of fresh ideas
5) The show hasn't quite been the same after the unbelievable season 5

Blasphemy! 24 is still gonna be one of the most kickin' shows in prime time. If anything, the writer's strike helped with getting more creative ideas and coming up with clever plot lines.
And, let me respond to each of your points:
1) Jack Bauer
2) Jack Bauer
3) Jack Bauer
4) Jack Bauer
5) Jack Bauer
As long as the sultan of butt kicking is still around, this show is definitely going to be worth watching

Jack is only as good as his writers are. They seemed to be running out of fresh ideas last season, so, based on other good shows that have taken the same route of mediocrity (you know what I'm talking about), 24 may take the same long, rough road to the bottom. I certainly hope not, and I still hold some faith in this season, but it certainly seems that way (see reasons above).

I agree last season was not very good. But this season is showing great promise. No CTU. Tony as a villain. No ticking nuclear bomb. All the producers are saying this season is going to be a lot different from the others... Just watching the trailer so far, I agree. I can't wait!
double_agent said
Don't producers who finance the show always say good things about their program? That way people actually watch the show and the producers get a profit? And sure, the writers were thinking of new ideas over the strike...but that doesn't mean they are good ones. We'll never know until it airs...in a year!

All I can say is this. 24 overall is an awesome show that simply had a bad season last year. It's natural to assume that the one bad season is a foreshadow of things to come. But let's not jump to such a hasty conclusion and keep in mind that 24 did give us 5 extraordinary seasons and Jack Bauer is still around doing the things he does best..
You're right though. Whether or not Day 7 will be worth the wait can only be answered in time. Personally, I can't wait!

I agree that it might be hard to top past seasons, but as long as the world is in crisis, as long as there are baddies out there, Jack will be there to save the day.
And have we forgotten that Tony is back this season in a new shade of evil?

Tony? Back? He's...he's dead, though...what's going on?

I think 24 has already descended into mediocrity, but for the sake of rooting against this lame show, I'll say it will become even more mediocre.

I actually stoped watching 24 about four-fifths through last season, but I'm going to have to disagre with double_agent. This long hiatus has actually got me itching for a new 24 season, and I don't think that they will ever run out of ways for America to be terrorized. It might sound bad, but it's true.

Sure, I'm anxious for a new season to come around, but I just don't think it will be very good, especially based on last season.

24 is going to be huge in 2009! You can't tell me that writers weren't thinking of ideas while they were on strike. 24 has to be huge, because so many of us hardcore fans are going to start to lose interest if we get another crappy season.
outlatrbdr 03/25/08
24 is done. unless this season is absolutely amazing.

also lets remeber the drop in the Sopranos after their 18 month hiatis.

Season 5 and season 6 really could've taken the show to a new, innovative direction, but the writers stuck with the same ol', same ol' routine. I didn't mind so much with season 5, since it turned out to be very good, but it definitely showed in season 6. But hey...better late than never.
Time will tell if Joel Surnow's absence will affect the show, but I'm sticking by the show to the bitter end. I even chose it over Heroes season 1, despite my Heroes watching friends saying I'm wasting my time (now ignoring the fact that it took 24 five seasons to show signs of fatigue, instead of one). I watch the reruns constantly and it provided me too many great thrills to give up now. Bringing back Tony, absurd as it is, is a nice start. Same with taking away CTU. I'm skeptical over the terrorist plot, which seems ripped off from Die Hard 4, but time will tell before we see how this unfolds. At least the writers will have a nice head start to develop the plot this time, but if they screw up again almost two years after season 6, I don't think it can bounce back.
P.S. Has anyone read the 24 magazine? Good lord, I don't want to be associated with those gushy fanboys/fangirls.

I dont think 24 could get worse than it was last season. i think it will only get better
Jaclin Hyde 03/25/08
This is an easy one since I lost interest in this show after its first season.
bookgirl2632 03/26/08
It had an off year last season. After being off the year all this time, I think it'll come back strong. Moreover, the writers are mixing things up a bit, changing locales and such. I'm excited to see the changes. Besides, even a mediocre season of 24 is better than most other shows.

The fact that Tony is SOMEHOW able to return from the dead in the upcoming Season 7 is a sign that this show has already descended into mediocrity.
Remember when this show used to have a shred of credibility and characters actually stayed dead once they were killed? Except for Jack, of course. I mean who else is going to save the day, right?
In my opinion, 24 jumped the shark last season and has already long surpassed it's expiration date.
Remember when 24 used to be groundbreaking, edge-of-your-seat entertainment that you couldn't stop watching week to week? Remember when you could no longer hold your breath from scene to scene and the nervous energy that came with the anticipation of that dreaded ticking clock? And the excitement you got from hearing that sound - CHEUH CHEUH CHEUH - knowing the the commercial break was over?
Yeah, I miss those days too. Pun intended.
