One word: Chrismakkuh. While there are many good holiday-themed episodes of other shows, The O.C. has been the most consistent with four amazing Chrismakkuh episodes (complete with very creative episode titles). Each one has been one of the biggest episodes of the season. The show has single-handedly launched the new holiday into the world of pop culture.

Where to begin, where to begin. Oh yeah, Buffy definitely does the holiday season best. Amends anyone? I would say that Amends is the best holiday episode of any tv show that I have ever seen. I've seen three Chrismakkuh episodes of the OC and although I will admit they aren't too bad, they don't bring tears to my eyes like Amends does every single time I watch it. Watching Angel trying to commit suicide by staying outside after sunrise because he is being haunted by the victims of his past who are telling him to kill Buffy is a great hour of television. Lines that make me tear up every time:
Angel: "I'm weak. I've never been anything else. It's not the demon in me that needs killing, Buffy. It's the man. "
Angel: "Am I a thing worth saving, huh? Am I a righteous man? The world wants me gone!"
Angel: "Buffy, please. Just this once... let me be strong."
Buffy: "Strong is fighting! It's hard, and it's painful, and it's every day. It's what we have to do. "

While I'm sure you'll get a lot of support because of the Whedon fans, I would hardly consider this episode to be a holiday episode. It is a GREAT episode, yes, but I would not classify it as a holiday episode. Simply, it takes place during the holiday.
But, let's say that it is a holiday episode. Buffy then has one great holiday episode... but what other episodes? I mentioned that there are many other holiday-themed episodes (okay, let's say "Amends" is one of them), but I then made a point to say that the O.C. has been the most consistently good.
Plus, there is the fact that they made their own holiday. And not only did they make their own holiday, but now the holiday has entered the world of pop culture. It is even mentioned in Grey's Anatomy.
If you were arguing that Amends is a great episode of Buffy, I would have to agree. But this is one example of a loosely-holiday-based episode out of seven seasons of a show. At least give me Grey's Anatomy as it has one of my favorite quotes of all time-- "'Cause it's what Jesus would friggin do!"
I'm a big Buffy/Angel fan but when I think of holiday episodes, Amends does not come to mind. It's good, but not holiday-themed to me.

It is a Christmas episode and was advertised as a Buffy Christmas...so it definitely qualifies as a Holiday episode...and it also has good Halloween episodes...Halloween and Fear Itself. Both of those I would consider to be better than the Chrismakkuh episodes as well. Also Roswell had some great christmas themed episodes. The one where Max cures all of the kids with deadly diseases at the end really tugs at the heart strings and who doesnt love Katherine Heigl's Isabel as the Christmas ****? And to go back to Amends...most definitely Holiday themed as it is Christmas and it was called a Christmas miracle when it snowed in California and stopped Angel for dying...

"The Best Chrismukkah Ever"- This one is amazing if only for the fact that it introduces the world to Seth's new creation: Chrismukkah. The holiday brings Ryan closer to the family (the picture of the four of them by the fireplace is very heartwarming, I believe). Also, the great Anna/Summer rivalry reaches its peak at this episode. Also reaching it's peak is Marissa's drinking problem; and where else but the psych waiting room does she meet Oliver Trask?
"The Chrismukkah That Almost Wasn't"- Linday's a Cohen??!
"The Chrismukkah Bar-Mitzvahkkah"- Seth's craziest plan ever equals having the non-Jewish Ryan having a Bar-Mitzvah to raise money for Johnny. Say wha?
"The Chrismukk-huh?"- My absolute favorite Chrismukkah episode. Ryan and Taylor fall into a "coma lite" and have to resolve the problems in the alternate universe. I'm a sucker for any It's A Wonderful Life-themed episode, and this one goes above and beyond. Taylor's humor along with the interesting "altverse" give this episode its charm.
The Thanksgiving episodes are amazing as well, but the New Years episode where the gang deals with a pregnancy scare on the road is amazing as well.

And all this in just one show..

I'm not denying that the ones that I've seen of the ones that you've mentioned are good...I just think that Buffy does the holidays better....Amends....heartwrenching episode where it snows to stop Angel from committing suicide.....Pangs....Xander gets syphillis from the Chumash tribe, Angel makes an interesting return...Spike is tied down to a chair while fighting ensued...."You made a bear! Undo it, undo it!.....Halloween....Buffy as a helpless damsel, Xander as an army dude....Fear Itself....Anya's fear of bunnies....bunnies?....seriously?...and the pint sized demon....pure genius...I think that Buffy beats the OC in the holiday season...although the OC does the season well...Buffy just does it better

well, i don't want to use my next argument for this because we need to give people time to vote, but i just wanted to say that what i meant by "holiday season" in my throwdown statement, was the holiday season-- as in thanksgiving, christmas, etc. it's politically incorrect to consider halloween a holiday within the holiday season. make your own judgement, i guess.

Mar72003_699_lg

Its politically incorrect to consider halloween a holiday? seriously?

May112007_933c_lg

do you suffer selective reading? the holiday SEASON. the holiday SEASON does not include halloween. the holiday SEASON starts with thanksgiving and ends with new years.

Mar72003_699_lg

I certainly wouldn't consider "the holiday season" a matter of political correctness since it is not "a term used to describe language, ideas, policies, or behavior seen as seeking to minimize offense to racial, cultural, or other identity groups." I apparantly did not have the same interpretation of your question as you did...so if you feel the need...disregard my Halloween Buffy eps and instead put in the wonderful Thanksgiving ep of Pangs if that will make you feel better...so I say Amends and Pangs on Buffy and the wonderful Christmas eps of Roswell are better than your OC eps...

Mar72003_699_lg

And also...there are plenty of websites that say Halloween marks the beginning of the holiday season...here's an example... http://www.dmnews.com/Halloween-marks-the-beginning-of-the-Holiday-season-says-Oneupweb/article/94094/
so you're Dbag comment was completely unnecessary

May112007_933c_lg

okay, well the award for avoiding the fact that halloween is not a holiday within the holiday season goes to...

Mar72003_699_lg

Did you not see my last comment...Halloween marks the beginning of the holiday season, so therefore....it is within the holiday season....but if you can't accept that, like I said, you can replace Pangs with the Halloween eps

May112007_933c_lg

fyi- i began posting the comment before you had posted your halloween one.

and if you feel my comment was a "dbag comment"... it was only in response to "Its politically incorrect to consider halloween a holiday? seriously?"

Mar72003_699_lg

yep, still think its a dbag comment bcuz i just didnt think the term politically correct belonged anywhere near this discussion.

May112007_933c_lg

sorry, i did not mean to offend you by my use of the term.

Mar72003_699_lg

you using the term politically correct didnt offend me, it just seemed out of place, what offended me was: "do you suffer selective reading? the holiday SEASON. the holiday SEASON does not include halloween. the holiday SEASON starts with thanksgiving and ends with new years."

Mar72003_699_lg

And wow...they put an asterick(sp?) in my second argument when I called Isabel the Christmas N-A-Z-I ...the words of the writers...not me

May112007_933c_lg

i was only condescending because i believed the seriously to be condescending. lets label it a misunderstanding and leave it at that please.

Mar72003_699_lg

well....since u said please.... ;)

May112007_933c_lg

and thank you

Mar022007_923_lg

Did everyone forget about Aaron Sorkin? The Sports Night and Studio 60 Christmas specials were damn near perfect!

Oct52007_957_lg

I like Friends' Thanksgiving episodes

Oct212005_846_lg

Suggesting the OC does anything well is grounds for voteing for the other person.

May112007_933c_lg

RobGrizzly-
I do LOVE the Friends' Thanksgiving episodes! What I am trying to say though is that annually The O.C. saves BIG things for their Holiday episodes (mainly, obviously, Chrismukkuh). But on top of this they have had amazing Thanksgivings and their fourth season New Year's was one of the best episodes of the show, as well ("Earth Girls Are Easy"). I can just always depend on The O.C. (well... i could always depend) when it came to the Holidays. And, it's even become a tradition in my house to watch the O.C. Chrismukkuh's every Christmas.

Feb242006_865_lg

I think this is an unfair throwdown to scarsandstories. Yes, hmorsey, that Buffy episode may have been great, but the point of the throwdown is really, "Who has the best holiday/Christmas episodes?" PLURAL. AND ABOUT THE HOLIDAYS.

I think it's unfair to just argue about one single episode of Buffy. The OC has a fabulous trend of great Christmas episodes. Where's Buffy's Christmas trend?

And I've never seen 'the holiday season' include Halloween.
