Avatar-30 The Throwdown ended in a tie, 2 to 2

Gilmore Girls would have had a much more satisfying ending if Luke and Lorelai had married on "June 3" in Season 6 as planned.

TPTB think that once a couple is together on a show, viewers will lose interest. Why else has shows like "Cheers," "Friends," and "Grey's Anatomy" always had a "Will they or won't they" couple? However, I am actually frustrated with these on-again, off-again couples; I eventually lose interest and stop caring. I am more interested in how TV couples can keep viewers entertained without them having to break up over and over. That's why I loved Clair and Cliff Huxtable, Monica and Chandler Bing . . . and, for some time, Lorelai Gilmore and Luke Danes.

Many "Gilmore Girls" fans thought it would be wrong for the show's last episode to be a Luke and Lorelai wedding. I actually agree, because I feel the focus should've been on Lorelai and Rory, which I'm glad to say it was. However, I really wish Lorelai and Luke had married on that June 3rd as they'd planned--which would've been the Season 6 finale--and then the entire 7th and last season of the show could have focused on the mom-and-daughter team. I would've loved to see how Luke-as-stepfather would have affected the girls' dymanic. It would've been much more interesting and believable than Lorelai's short marriage to Chris.

Honestly, I dont think that season 7 would have been good no matter what happened in the season 6 finale for one reason: No Amy Sherman Palladino. Season 7 is by far the worst season of Gilmore Girls and the reason for that is no Palladino. No season 6 finale would have saved that. Even if Luke and Lorelai would have married then I'm sure Christopher would have still found a way to screw it up since we saw 6 years worth of times that he screwed up Lorelai's love life. I really don't think that anything short of brining Palladino back on would have redeemed season 7.

I hear you about missing ASP; Season 7 is definitely the worst season, and I know a big part of that is because the creator left the show before its final season. However, I actually think she is partially to blame for what happened in the last season because she wrote the characters into a corner, then left. She wrote the Season 6 finale of Lorelai giving Luke an ultimatum, then going to Chris's and waking in his bed. I don't know what the remaining writers were supposed to do with that. However, if she'd written episodes where Lorelai actually explained to Luke why she was upset instead of exploding at him after holding it in so long--very out of character for Lorelai, I thought--perhaps Season 7 could have had a shot. I feel the first part of Season 7 was handling the mess of ASP's last episode.

As harsh as I may have sounded, I don't mean to disresepct ASP, as she is responsible for my favorite years of a terrific show. However, I can't help being disappointed that she left, especially given the state she left the characters in!

As far as I know, she didn't really leave by choice...I could be wrong on that though. I think she might have been a little bitter about being forced out and thats why she kind of ended season 6 the way that she did. Although the writers had plenty of ways they could have dealt with that better than the way they did....but the thing is, no matter how hard they tried the show wouldn't have had the same feel as previous seasons. ASP is a genius.

Here's Amy and her husband Dan's official statement:

"Despite our best efforts to return and ensure the future of Gilmore Girls for years to come, we were unable to reach an agreement with the studio and are therefore leaving when our contracts expire at the end of this season," said Amy and Dan in a statement. "Our heartfelt thanks go out to our amazing cast, hard-working crew and loyal fans. We know that the story lines from this season will continue into the next, and that the integrity of the show will remain long after we leave Stars Hollow."

I'm not sure why they couldn't reach an agreement with the studio, and I agree with you that the final season would have been lacking without ASP, no matter what. However, my argument isn't that the show would've had a more satisfying ending if ASP had stayed on board. I think you and I both agree that it would have. My argument is that the show would've had a more satisfying ending if Luke and Lorelai had married, and I still think that's true. Instead of Lorelai's ridiculous marriage to Chris--and backtracking after that mistake--we would have finally gotten to see Lorelai have something real and grown-up.

I still think that the new showrunners would have broken Luke and Lorelai up in the beginning of the next season if they had gotten married in the season 6 finale. I believe Lauren Graham had a lot more influence over the show and from what I read her and the actor who paid Luke did not get along and that's why their storylines went in different directions. She thought that Lorelai and Chris belonged together, which I believe a huge majority of the fans would not agree with. Luke was not that great of a guy to her once he found out about his daughter(insert my hatred for that storyline here) and I think that the blowout him and Lorelai had was inevitable with the way he was treating her. They would have had to change a lot of the story in season 6 in order to make what you are suggesting not feel forced at all, so I'm going to stick with my argument that it wouldn't have changed much.

Great points, hmorsey! This was my first throwdown where someone posted all three arguments, and it was a lot of fun. I do agree that I hated Luke's long-lost daughter storyline, and I thought it was out of character for him to treat Lorelai badly. I also thought it was out of character for her not to say anything about that to him. I still like to think that if she had spoken up, they might have been able to get through it as a couple. Communication is so important, and she was not expressing her feelings. So frustrating to watch!

Yeah it was a fun throwdown! I love this site...I just joined a few days ago and I'm obsessed with it ;) Yeah the daughter storyline was quite obnoxious. But I dont think it was much out of character for him to treat her that way, I think he just became self involved due to the random daughter storyline. I like that Lorelai gave him an ultimatum becuz he was treating her like ****. But I wish that ASP wouldve stayed on the show so that season 7 would've been good and I wish that Luke and Lorelai would've married at some point since they're a good couple. Also I'm still dying to know the last five words that were supposed to be in the series finale....ASP has always known what they would be but wont reveal them in the hopes of a movie someday...

Mar252005_812d_lg

I'm dying to know those, too! If she ever decides there won't be a movie, I think she owes it to us fans to reveal what those last words were.

Agreed!
