I will admit that, though completely unrealistic for a show that was supposed to be based in reality, the time travel storyline spawned some great moments of much-needed humor in an otherwise extremely serious and dramatic final season. I especially loved how carefree and flirty Ben and Felicity were able to be with one another because this was a reality in which he'd never had a child with another woman--or cheated with yet another woman.
Even so, the final episode as it exists is not great for me. It's mostly a flashback episode, which I would rather have had in a special before the final episode aired. I think it can get pretty murky to work an episode around fitting in all those flashback scenes--and this was no exception. Felicity pouring her hear out to the author of a time travel book? Pretty contrived, especially when compared to . . .
The last episode before the time travel storyline. I love that episode and believed it would have made a perfect series finale. No gimmicks, no two-hour extravaganzas. Just a simple tying up of all loose ends. In a parallel to the pilot, Ben finally follows Felicity across the country instead of the other way around.

Although I think that The Graduate was a great episode...the time travel storyline was my favorite of the entire series and is actually what drew me into the show. I had watched a few episodes here and there but it was the advertising of the first time travel episode that got me watching the show and then later buying the seasons of the show. It's been a coupla years since I've seen the eps so forgive me if I mess up a few of the details, but I pretty much loved the sci fi like quality thrown into the series. Ben cheats on her so she wants to go back in time to pick Noel instead....love it! Especially since I'm a Noel fan ;) And also when her changing the past led to Noel dying in a fire I was heartbroken...and I love it when a show breaks my heart, lol. I thought it was an excellent conclusion to a great series, even though The Graduate was its original series finale and the time travel bit only came around when the WB gave them more episodes at the last minute due to its replacement show doing poorly.

I love Noel, too, but the time travel episodes showed that the ending in "The Graduate" got it right--Felicity belongs with Ben. While I understand that something had to be done in the additional five episodes the WB gave the show--and I admit I found the idea of having Felicity time travel fun and inventive--I ultimately think it was not the best way to use up those extra episodes, for two reasons:
1. It did, in fact, just reiterate what "The Graduate" already told us--that Ben and Felicity belonged together. Now, if Felicity had time traveled for Noel because she had made the wrong choice, there would have been more of a point to it for me. It would've been interesting if these last few episodes really affected the outcome of the show.
2. The time travel episodes created a lot of confusion; for example, people thinking the storyline was a dream. It wasn't. In the 1st time travel episode, Elena had died. In the series finale, she's alive and well. In a DVD featurette called "Lost Elena," we see (vital!) scenes that were deleted from the last episode, where Felicity tells Elena to go to Duke so she won't get in the car wreck that kills her, which proves this was real.

They do create a lot of confusion...but if it wasn't a dream...why is Noel alive? I know that Elena is now alive and I've watched the deleted scenes...but I still think it could go either way, otherwise why is Noel alive?
I'm fine with Felicity ending up with Ben...it is the reason that she went to college in NY after all...but I just think that the time travel episodes were an inventive, entertaining way to conclude a great series...and I'm unsure how they could have done a better job of randomly throwing a few episodes in at the end of the series. It didn't bother me that the last few episodes didn't effect the outcome fo the show because the creator didn't want to change the outcome. He already picked how he wanted the series to go out and I'm glad we got a what would've happened if she would've went after Noel instead of Ben.

Your question of "Why is Noel alive?" illustrates my point about these episodes: They create confusion! Time travel shows or movies ("The Butterfly Effect," "The Lake House") almost always leave people scratching their heads, trying to figure out the logistics.
I guess that, unlike Elena, who'd died before Felicity time traveled, Noel died in this "alternate universe" that Felicity had time traveled to. When the spell was broken, Noel had never died.
However, Felicity was able to warn Elena while she was in her alternate universe and prevent her death. If Elena had never died, then Felicity wouldn't have become distant, which was Ben's reason for cheating on her with Claire. This means that Felicity wouldn't have had a reason to travel back to her senior year and choose Noel--and the whole thing never would've happened!
That's why, as much as I enjoyed these episodes, I can't help but think of the perfect little ending they had with "The Graduate"--none of these confusions existed!
It makes sense that the creator didn't want to change the outcome--but because it didn't change, I can't help but wonder what the purpose of this confusion was. . . my head hurts.

Haha, I agree that time travel can be very confusing in every form it is used in. It really makes you think...and sometimes when you're done thinking you realize that it just doesn't seem to make sense...maybe its you who is understanding it wrong, or maybe the creator...or maybe both, lol. The first episode of the Sarah Connor Chronicles drove me crazy for many reasons, the connection to T3 in particular, until I read that T3 was not supposed to be included in this time line. Time travel can be confusing as hell...but I can't help but love it in every form I see it in. And I can't help but love that it got me to tune in to this great show. It doesn't make sense that Elena can be changed by the alternate universe but Noel can't. Doesn't make one bit of sense...but I have to say I still absolutely love it. And I dont care that its confusing...I love that the show made me try to figure it out, and I love how we got to see what would have happened if she went after Noel instead of Ben in that season. I just plain love it! :)

i'm a felicity/ben fan, and i hate when realistic shows go unrealistic. that bugs me to no end.

however, after reading both arguments, i'm sort of split. sorry.

I believe it all ended up being a dream...which is still in the land of reality if that makes it better for ya ;)

I remember being so upset when I watched the last show. It was so out of place with the rest of the series.
scarsandstories8 03/25/08
my mistake. i did not remember it being a dream. in that case, it was a good ending.
Melissalane 03/25/08
If it ended up being a dream, then Elena still would've been dead. I believe that was J.J. and Matt's way of showing us it wasn't a dream.

Watch the deleted scenes on the DVD. They inexplicably cut a scene (no doubt, to include all the flashbacks!) where Felicity tells Elena to go to Duke instead of another college. That means instead of getting into a car wreck and dying, she goes to the same college as Tracy and they get back together. That's wy Tracy is with her at the end of the show.

Oops, "why." Why do I always check for typos after I send something?
