I know I may be poking a bear right in the eye on this site, and while I should preface this debate that in my mind, those two are THE two best season one cliffhangers I've seen, but as far as delivering the 'Holy cow the world is blowing up' feeling that is a hallmark of a good season cliffhanger, West Wing brings it home, again and again. I mean, the president gets shot! All they do in Lost is open a hatch. :)

I'm sorry but i would have to disagree with you on this one! you state that BOTH are amazing Finales then discard LOST as if it wasnt good...
In the season one finale of LOST we finally see the "monster", the hatch is opened, the first interaction [actually 2nd (ethan) or third... if you count Goodwin too] with the others....
it seals off an amazing season... that goes on to win BEST DRAMA so im sorry but i think LOST is wayy better!
[thos 2 y's in way is intentional]

Such passionate response from the comments so far...
For me, any good cliffhanger is one that leaves you with the 'You can't end it now!' feeling. It should leave you with a sense that it's almost unfair that you're going to have to wait all summer for something that is effectively an easy answer.
The Lost season one finale was quite, quite good, even a little bit emotional, but on some level, I knew that the answer of what was in the hatch could be answered easily or quickly.
With West Wing, the release of tension could have been triggered by a much more simple answer; has the President been shot.

Blast! it appears I'm on the losing end of this one, but let me just say this. I spent all summer freaking out about that West Wing finale, and while I was very impressed with Lost, I didn't lose any sleep over it.
That said, I'm coming up on the season two finale now as I'm catching up on dvd. Maybe there's another throwdown coming...

Of the two, I prefer Lost, but they pale in comparison to Alias. I mean, Sydney finding out that the man is not Khasinau but actually her shoulda-been-dead mother (and Vaughn appearing to drown!)? I'd ask you to top that, but obviously the season 2 Alias finale does.
shaggydan 03/31/08
Alias, eh. I have to admit to having never watched it. Are you making a recommendation Counteragent?
greywolf17 03/31/08
As far as LOST and West Wing, I hve to go with LOST. As far as Season 1 finales go, I'd have to say that JERICHO was fantastic, Jakes dad died trying to protect the town, Hawkins is prepared to stop a train from getting into the town by using a Tank with no ammo, a new government army that appeared in the blue is now going to Jericho to investigate a terrorist that may be containing a Necluar bomb, and at the end the people of Jericho are outnumbered against people of an opposing town and as the ending credits start coming up all you hear the gunshots.
The Counteragent 04/01/08
Not even a recommendation--I command you to get your hands on the complete series ASAP (yes, even season 4). And I apologize for spoiling some season 1 details. Seriously though, best show ever and sole reason for me wanting to write TV.

I agree with Shaggydan on this one...the west wing season one finale was absolutely brilliant...it had me itching to watch the next episode...whereas the lost finale just brought up a bunch of new questions without answering any and made me lose some interest in the show...and interest that wasnt completely renewed until the season 3 finale...
hmorsey 04/01/08
And I have to agree with the counteragent...alias is amazing...i need to get my seasons out and rewatch them asap
outlatrbdr 04/01/08
while it kills me to have to agree with shaggydan, having lost to him twice, when you are right you are right. i spent that entire summer hoping that they did not kill charlie.
RobGrizzly 04/01/08
damnit shaggy, you're right
Moononastring 04/01/08
Can't vote, never having seen The West Wing, but I have to say that...
#1 Lost's Season 2 and 3 finales were way better than the season 1 one,
and
#2 I agree that the Alias season 1 finale was amazing
shaggydan you HAVE to see Alias...the first 2 seasons are some of the best TV ever made
hmorsey 04/01/08
I'm in the minority who loved the last three seasons of Alias as well :)
shaggydan 04/01/08
Counteragent, Moononastring, your Alias support is inspiring. I'll have to find myself a copy of the first season after I get through my current show of obsession.
Until about a week ago, I'd never watched an episode of Lost (I know, I know), and know that I'm little more than a season in, I'm just, you know, blown... away. I'm going to write a blog about it later tonight, I think.
shaggydan 04/01/08
By the way, whose up for a best season premiere episode throwdown, cause I can talk about "In the Shadow of Two Gunmen" all day...
The Counteragent 04/01/08
I loved the last 3 seasons, just not as much as the first 2. Well, and the first half of 3 (up until "Full Disclosure") and 2nd half of 5 (from "Maternal Instinct" on) are up to my high, high Alias standards. God, I just need to make a bunch of Alias throwdowns and stop talking about it here, lol.
The Counteragent 04/01/08
Also, I'd defend season 3's premiere "The Two" as the best (and yes, I'm talking Alias. AGAIN.)
huzzah 04/02/08
Yeah, shaggydan, West Wing's Season 1 finale and Season 2 premier was about as good as it gets, and that's coming from a LOST fanatic. My favorite part was probably how President Bartlett and Josh were both shot, but it was Moira Kelly's character that died somehow...
shaggydan 04/02/08
Yeah, Moira just kind of went away, didn't she. Disappeared like a garden gnome.
outlatrbdr 04/03/08
Was there anything better than her dissaperance? the weekest link on the entire show and she just was gone at the beginning of season two. on of the truly great moves in tv history.
randomlove36 04/04/08
There is no contest...Lost all the way
double_agent 04/07/08
1) Some guy blew up
2) It reeled us into a new world of LOST-ness.
3) It kept us guessing about the hatch
4) We saw smoky, in a rare screen appearance
I don't think the West Wing, an excellent show, gave us such wonder and such crazy ideas about something as simple as a hatch in the ground. End of story.
ConfidenceMan 04/08/08
Lostttt.
Also, Counteragent, I'm probably going to harass you about borrowing Alias sometime soon - after I get my hands on BSG from Andy, that is.
