Say what you will about Syd and Vaughn walking off into the sunset--I loved it. Given everything that unfolded in the last two seasons, I feel like they really did they best they possibly could with the finale. Major mysteries were more or less solved, and characters got their due, all while still being highly entertaining and unique.

Alias' ending had to be one of my biggest TV disappointments. It seemed disjointed, tacked together, and disrespectful to longtime fans of the show. I remember turning it off (after five years of loyal viewership) and being like pffft. whatever. All of the actors on the show seemed so ready for it to end, and had seemed that way ever since Syd became prego. That was so dumb (pregnant super spies...not so entertaining) and so obviously unexpected for writers who were left scrambling for the rest of the season. The whole introduction of Rachel and Tom gave me the same feeling as when Mulder left "The X-Files"- the feeling that the show had wildly veered off course and was just struggling to stay afloat. Painful to watch.

I hated the "sunset ending"- please. Babies! Vaughnie! Yippee! Ugh. Where was the Sydney of yesteryear? The one I loved in the premiere who got engaged AND kicked ****- all in the same day?

What else happened in the finale? SpyDaddy had a pointless death that didn't even upset Syd that much. And Irina was turned into a villain caricature that went from being compelling (Season 2, anyone?) to laughable.

Nothing worked for me. I still get mad just thinking about it.

From the moment of Sydney and Jack's last interaction on, I was in tears and didn't stop crying until an hour after the finale was over. So it at least emotionally appealed to this chick.

It's not the fault of Alias that Jennifer Garner got knocked up, and since it obviously had to be dealt with, I give them a lot of credit in the execution. For me, Sydney prioritizing Isabelle over the CIA is what differentiates her from Irina, and ultimately defines her character: the people she loves are the most important thing in the world to her.

Rachel and Tom made enough sense to me, especially given that the point of them being there was to introduce characters who'd take over had the show gone on for another season without Garner. Tom was fairly flat, I'll admit, but Rachel had a pretty good arc and was a great actress---dare I call her an asset to season 5.

Jack's death wasn't pointless-he was going to die anyway, might as well trap Sloane for eternity! I mean, it had to happen, given the strong emotional moment with him and Sydney finally saying those 3 words. And Irina wasn't a caricature so much as just evil, obsessive, and crazed. Such is the life of a Rambaldi follower.

I see your point about Alias having to deal with the pregnancy- but I almost wonder then if the show should have just stopped with season 4. Everything from then on was pretty ridiculous- and why stretch out the plot and add all these new characters and beat the dead horse? They should have just ended the show- it kind of reminds me of the "what not to do" that I think shows like Battlestar Galactica have learned from. BSG's creators know they have enough solid plot for four seasons (presumably) so they're stopping there, on their own terms at a strong stopping point (finding earth).

This finale problem seems to be prevalent with JJ Abrams shows- Felicity ran out of steam and ended up in a crazy time travel episode, Alias ran out of steam and dissolved into soapy bubbles at the end, and I worry for Lost as well- it seems like Abrams is great at conceptualizing an idea, but awful at bringing it to a sensible, well thought out ending. He said himself the Rambaldi thing was originally just a McGuffin, and the final season showed how shaky the show was on its own mythology.

And since you brought up the whole Sloane trapped for eternity- the ridiculous "Nadia ghost" thing? So. Dumb.

Forfeited Turn

My only other argument would be that Alias set such a great precedent for finales, and then ended on such a disappointing note. The first season finale with Vaughn trapped underwater and Syd coming face to face with her mom was one of my favorite finales EVER. I am in no way saying that Alias was a bad show by saying it had a bad series finale- Alias was one of my favorite shows of all time, and that's why its bad ending was even more disappointing.

agh..... I'm not sure who I agree with more. While I loved seeing Syd and Vaughn happy, and finally together for good, I do think the finale was incredibly lackluster. I too, found myself wondering where the old Syd was...

i've spent a couple of days thinking about this and i'm ready now. I liked it. I really do think there wasn't much else of a way to end the show. from the minute she found out that she wasn't CIA and actually working for sd-6 waaay back in season 1 she'd always said she just wanted to bring down sd-6/sloane. In the finale she did just that, so it was almost a given that she would walk away from it then.

i certainly like finale's like that, giving some sense of closure better than a non-finale like Angel or even Buffy....both of those left many unanswered questions, thank god for the comics!

I think the ending to Alias was fantastic...a great 2 hours of tv...
