So You Think You Can Dance: Cirque du Mark
Michael's guest stint on Eli Stone???okay, yes, as himself???had more conviction and truthiness than Spears' turn on How I Met Your Mother. And when that girl can't play needy, clingy, and unhinged, something is wrong.
Let us not forget about Will & Grace!!
There's absolutely no doubt about it that Spears' stint on HIMYM was atrocious, to say the least, from every standpoint. But Spears was a knockout when she guest starred as Jack's ridiculous co-host. Of course, never will she be considered a 'good' actress (Crossroads, anyone?) but she definitely held her own back in her heyday.
George Michael has yet to wow me, methinks.
Let's look at this from a different angle: George had to sell PREPOSTEROUS idea that not only would a major celebrity fund some high school fan's legal battle (which one might), but that he'd fly all the way across a big pond, seek out some attorney's he's heard of IN A DREAM, and commit to doing a benefit concert so that teenagers know how to use Astro Glide. And he did it convincingly. Again, Britney had to do what? Make us believe she was needy and fragile? Big stretch, Stongie. Big Stretch.
But again, WILL AND GRACE! She did ultra-conservative talk-show host Amber-Louise, and she held her own against Sean Hayes. That's a feat right there. Who did George Michael have to outact? Loretta Devine? Super-serious Victor Garber? Were they even in a scene together? Spears pulled her weight around Hayes, and that's not an easy act!
And who can forget about the boob job monologue she did? Donning mechanical knockers is definitely worth some points here!
Also, we can't forget the VMA's last year. Acting is the only word to describe it, since girlfriend sure wasn't singing.
Will & Grace: This is a prime example of that-was-then Britney. I'm sorry, but we have to do deal with this-is-now Britney, and this-is-now Britney was tap-dancing so fast you could see the flop sweat bursting through???even in an easygoing, comfortable environment like HIMYM. It's practically an acting spa. Besides, do we give awards for the stuff we did two years ago? Um, is anyone still laughing at a Two and a Half Men joke I made in What to Watch in 2006? I don't think so. Of course, that could be for other reasons.
Boob job monologue: Will ANYONE argue that the **** did all the acting? Moving on...
VMA's: That was not acting. That was a public cry for help. Flaming out in front of swaths of people and still being beloved may be the modern definition of celebrity, but it ain't what they get paid for.
George Michael, on the other hand, came onto a freshman show that's still finding its way, and made a potentially laughable plotline work. He sold the lines, looked convincing spouting stats and theories on sex education, and almost made us forget about the public restroom escapades. (Oh come on, I said "almost.") Britney just made us want to hire someone to hug her.
I can't believe I'm advocating Britney Spears. Oh, Chris Crocker, where art thou?
I suppose then that if I can't talk about SNL or Will & Grace, then there's nothing left to redeem Britney. I will say, though, that you can't just eliminate old-Britney's acting work because she's a new person now. Julie Andrews can't sing anymore, so can we not call her a singer and examine her old singing work because she's not the same anymore?
Yeah, Britney has transformed into the personality and sanity equivalent of a bag of hair, but I still think she pulled off some much better acting tactics in her prime than George Michael is doing currently.
Fun throwdown though, Alynda, I'll give you that. Matching wits with an EW writer, hoo daddy...
What was the best cop show on TV from 1998 to 2008?

I think they are about even. While Britney was horrible on HIMYM she was excellent on "Will & Grace", but her atrocious performance in "Crossroads" just about wipes away any chance of her being considered a good actress.
While George was good in his role of himself i wouldn't call him a good or bad actor.

I'm a better actor than Britney Spears.

Britney has proved in the past that she has pretty good comic timing. She was pretty good on Saturday Night Live. I'm not calling her one of the greats, but let's forget talent - it takes guts to play something other than yourself as George Michael did last week on Eli Stone.

While Sarah Chalke was the real guest STAR on that episode of "How I Met Your Mother," I credit Britney for not going overboard in her role. In my opinion, she didn't try to take attention away from the main Ted-Stella storyline, and the role was nicely self-deprecating. I agree that Britney was funny on SNL, too. I agree an Oscar isn't in her future, but I was genuinely worried she would bring the quality of HIMYM down a notch, and I don't think she did. May not sound like high praise, but I think it actually is for Britney at this stage!

This is like choosing between dog crap and cat crap.
At the end of the day, it's crap.

Britney wasn't bad on SNL, but she was more like a prop that talked than anything I'd call a "good" comic actor...

Donning mechanical knockers does not an actor make. See my previous post.
And I felt her turn on Will & Grace was rather...well, terrible, as acting standards go. Am I the only one who couldn't understand why an "actress" from the South had such a terrible southern accent?
