Oct192007_959_960_lg ABCSOAPS55 wins! ABCSOAPS55 beat huzzah 8 to 4.

Although Amy Poehler and Seth Meyers are very funny on "Weekend Update" they are not nearly as funny as Tina Fey and Jimmy Fallon were.

Amy and Seth are cute and get a few laughs but thier act is not nearly as thought out, enjoyable or charismatic as Jimmy Fallon and Tina Fey's was. Tina brought a more well rounded quality to the desk and Jimmy Fallon simply had more charisma than Seth Meyers ever will.

Wow. OK, if memory serves I also really liked Tina and Jimmy as Update anchors. Of course, ever since Dennis Miller manned the update desk I've found Weekend Update to be the most reliably funny part of SNL. Yes, including Kevin Nealon. And Norm MacDonald. And Colin Quinn. And I love Tina Fey. And everything she's done from her time as SNL head writer to 30Rock, including Mean Girls. Which I watched as a 27 year-old guy.

With that out of the way, I just have to disagree with you. Were Fallon and Fey funnier than Myers and Poehler? Maybe, but neither to the degree nor with the frequency that you apparently believe. I'll agree that Fey brought something new and different to the desk, but I think your comparison of Fallon and Meyers is way off base. Tina played the "straight man" to Jimmy's manic, ADD nutcase. Seth does the same with Amy.

I'm not going to argue that Amy & Seth are BETTER than Tina and Jimmy, but if they aren't equal they sure aren't tTHAT much worse. All I know is that I rarely find myself waxing nostalgic about the Fey/Fallon era of Update...and whenever I do, I am always watching 30Rock.

But the thing is that each of the people you mentioned Tina and Jimmy, Dennis Miller, Kevin Nealon, Colin Quinn, Norm MacDonald each brought something different to the table, but Amy and Seth are simply doing exactly what Tina and Jimmy did---they have brought nothing original to the table and there jokes simply lack any sort of genuine personality. When Tina was on-screen you knew where she was coming from--a feminist point of view, and jimmy was coming from the point of view of an airhead, with Amy and Seth it's simply Amy and Seth reading jokes somebody else wrote.

As Melissalane noted, The "Really?" segment is great. There's also Amy's drunk dials. I totally disagree about their jokes lacking personality. And since Meyers is Head Writer now, I find it doubtful that the two are just "reading jokes somebody else wrote".

In addition, you are comparing 4 years of Tina/Jimmy to a little over 1 year of Amy/Seth. It's going to take a little while to get up to speed, and it didn't help that the WGA strike took out the middle 4 months of the SNL season this year.

I prefer Seth to Jimmy because Seth treats it dryly, like a newscast. Jimmy's perceived "charisma" and "personality" stems from the fact that for him Update was just doing stand-up while sitting at a desk.

Are you sure this isn't just a case of "Who ARE these people?" Nostalgia for bygone days? That's a natural feeling, one I remember several people voicing when Will Ferrell & Co. first joined the show, and he & his cohorts ended up doing some classic work. I don't mean to discount your opinion or anything, but I can't help but think some of your dislike of Amy & Seth is simply because they replaced Tina & Jimmy. They aren't nearly as UNfunny as you seem to think...

I definetly do not think it is a matter of nosalgia, because i was equally as critical of Tina Fey and Jimmy Fallon when they first started. I just think that Seth Meyer's as head-writer as you mentioned lacks a point of view and the worldly intellect that Tina Fey had, and i think it shows in the lame, frat-boy esque jokes that they spew out each week. I will take Jimmy Fallon's airhead, surfer boy routine anyday over Seth's far too cynical dry sarcasm anyday... I also think that Amy while great in sketches simply isn't as adept at the news segments as she should be... or maybe she simply hasn't gelled with Seth yet, because she was actually rather good opposite Tina Fey...

"Equally critical"? Really? When Tina & Jimmy first started you were critical of them? But Seth & Amy have pretty much just started and they're nowhere near as funny? Really? You admit that, yet you're not going to compare the two pairs on a handicap allowing for the difference in experience in the seats? Really? You prefer the airhead routing to Seth's dry, cynical sarcasm? Even though being dry and cynical seems more like an newscaster, better fitting the role? You prefer Jimmy's clownishness? Yeah, the same demeanor he brings to EVERY SINGLE ROLE he has? Really? Really? You like an anchor who can't make it through a 10 minute sketch without laughing at himself like he's the funniest thing to hit the Earth since the platypus? "Frat boy-esque?" Really? I don't particularly agree, but even if I were to concede that point, you'd still prefer Jimmy's "frat boy-esque" delivery of arguably more intelligent jokes to Seth's dry delivery of these supposed poorer jokes? Really?

I'm sorry, but I agree with Counteragent below. Tina was a 10, Seth & Amy each 7s. But Jimmy was at most a 3, and 14>13. Even if not equal, Seth & Amy ARE **NEARLY** as funny.

Here's one original thing Seth and Amy bring to the table: The "Really?! with Seth and Amy" segment. I think that's the funniest thing to hit "Weekend Update" in years. Those two could win an "excellence in sarcasm" award.

I do agree with Melissalane's statement about "Really?!" Anytime they do that, I am extremely happy!!! However, they are hit-and-miss a lot of the time. The Jonah Hill episode, they were really solid. But, I miss Tina's smarts and Jimmy's airheadedness.

Weekend Update hasn't been funny since Norm MacDonald! Tina Fey should have hosted the news alone. Seth Myers should host alone. Why on Earth did SNL decide we needed two Weekend Update hosts to begin with? The new title of Weekend Update should be "We now take time out of a show that hasn't been good in ten years to bring you political humor that's not as funny as the Daily Show or the Colbert Report."

Apr182008_987_lg

Tina Fey, as much as I idolize her, cannot make up for how terrible Jimmy Fallon is. Since Amy Poehler and Seth Meyers are both funny, they win by default.

July272007_945_d_lg

Jimmy Fallon worked well with Tina Fey. By himself, he would have made a terrible anchor. But why is nobody mentioning Tina & Amy together? Now that was a team!

Hilarious final argument, huzzah.
