The Spartans were born and bred to fight and die in battle.
Yes, Achilles was blessed by the gods but he did have some weaknesses:
1)his heel, of course
2)his arrogance
Leonidas & his 300 were ready to sacrifice themselves for their families and their community while Achilles just seemed to be interested in fame and fun.
Plus the fight scenes in 300 were way more exciting, bloody, gutwrenching, and cool. Sorry Troy.

Yes, which is all very exciting in a low-life, uneducated way but wouldn't really work in real life. First of all, having lived in Greece I should tell you it was Not Leonidas and his 300 but Leonidas, his 300, and about 10000 other soldiers whohelped him in the battle. Anyhow, you can see that 300 Spartans went up against 50000 persians and lost. Obviously. Might I add here that though Spartans were raised to become killing machines, there were only about 800 of them.
Achilles, on the other hand, had the might of Ancient Greece at his disposal; you see, unlike the Spartans who were totally unsociable the Myrmidons( because that's how its written) had always sought to establish allies all over Greece. So it would be 100000 soldiers against 1000 spartans. that's 100 myrmidons for 1 Spartan. Leonidas would be DOOMED.

I'm talking about the MOVIES, not history or literature.
This is TV Throwdown, a pop culture site! Let's play.

Well, the movies were actually as fake as it gets. But again, Spartans lost after confrontingthe full persian army. Spartans were 300. Myrmidons were about 30000 alone. The logic is that 300 against 30000 loses every time. No matter how heroic the spartans were, Achilles was immortal except from his heel of course. Spartans were simply human.
HoneyBunny said
That's why 300 is more heroic and exciting. It's about "simply human" guys who fought and died for what they belived in. Hard to get thrilled about an arrogant god-man with nothing to lose.
I'll take Leonidas over Achilles. Haroompf!!!!!

Well, excuse me but I thought the throwdown was all about how 300 guys could beat 30000 ones. Anyway, the Spartans were outnumbered to say the very least. I am not saying that they could not beat the crap out of any passer by, but it would be simply impossible to beat the crap out of 100 people at the same time.
And come on, he wasn't that arrogant. Confident perhaps? I mean he was half god, and he did have an army that was feared by most. The issue here is numbers.

lol. fun throwdown. I like both movies. I think Gerard Butler's Leonidas vs Brat Pitt's Achillies would be a good fight. Hmm.
Butler's Pros: pointy beard; abs
Pitt's Pros: golden tan; abs
Both of them have really cool helmets...
results: tie
Zack Snyder's visual direction turned Leo into a hulking supersoldier on par with Captain America or Thor.
Wolfgang Peterson's direction made Achillies indestructable on the battlefield, with uncanny moves (check out that awesome fight against Hector)
results: tie
In the movies, both were killed by bow and arrow. But whereas Butler goes down in a blaze of glory, Pitt was bested by... Orlando Bloom
results: Leonidas

300 kicks ****!!
RobGrizzly's point about the mighty Achilles being brought down by the wimpy Orlando Bloom really robbed Troy of it's steam. 300 ends on a glorious thrilling surge to victory. And Leonidas goes down in an incredible hail of arrows while Achilles is taken down by one lowly lucky shot.
Both films are great works of myth & heroism but 300 reigns supreme for me.
Haroomph!
