I think that Christina Applegate, more than any other actress on tv right now deserves the emmy award for best actress in a comedy series. She has more range than Tina Fey who always plays every role the same way, she's a better physical comedian than Julia Louis Dreyfuss and her show is simply much funnier than any other sitcom on tv right now.

Ah yes, but we cannot forget that the fact that the show is funny does not make it worthy of winning best actress. And, may I submit a couple other reasons why she shouldn't?

-Felicity Huffman high on drugged brownies at a game night on "Desperate Housewives."
-Tina Fey destroyed in her wedding dress stuffing food in her face and accidentally impersonating Jerry Seinfeld in "30 Rock"
-Yvonne Strahovski flawlessly pulling off dinner with her supposed boyfriend's family and friends while proving she is not a double agent on "Chuck."
-Anna Friel coming back from the dead and learning she can never touch the man she loves in the "Pie-lette" of "Pushing Daisies"
-Tichina Arnold's always perfect mix of mania and love on "Everybody Hates Chris"
-Jamie Pressley trying to take care of Randy earlier this season on "My Name is Earl"
-America Ferrara high on chemicals from her perfume going crazy in Mode on "Ugly Betty."

Applegate is good, no questions about that, but really, the show is still finding its footing and she is still getting a grasp on her character. Next year maybe. This year, notsomuch.

See here is why i have no doubt applegate will not only get a nomination but win... The Academy seems very much so to be over "Desperate Housewives"---last season the only major acting nod they got was for Felicity Huffman and i just don't think her one comedic tape is enough to get her a win. Sure she has tons of dramatic stuff, but that won't fly in the comedy race. Ferrera mostly won last year because the show was so hyped up as the funny new show and now that the buzz has died down i doubt she'll be as high a priority for many voters. "Chuck" is so not a factor in the race at all--no way is the Academy going to vote for such a show. Fey i'll give you may be a threat---as she does have tapes to submit and was given the SAG and Globe's this season... I am not sure if Friel will be much of a factor, PD has been off the air for so long i'm betting many voters have forgotten about it by now. Tichina Arnold has managed a nod so far for her show and i see this year being no different. Pressley competes in Supporting Actress, so she's not a factor at all.

the fact that the show is a hit with critics is also a big plus for it.

You seem to be arguing why she WILL win the award, however the title of the argument is that she SHOULD win the award. In that, I humbly disagree...and I also think that "30 Rock" will ride the freight train to victory this year again unless "Pushing Daisies" upsets.

See i just don't think that 30 Rock or PD are all that deserving... all that Ana Friel does in every episode is sigh because she cant' touch anyone or see her family and act morose and sullen, and all Tina Fey does is scream and act like a witch in every episode, whereas Applegate has to basically play two different characters--- Old Sam and New Sam---both of which at totally different--she plays both extremes---the over the top, total witch and the down to earth do gooder... and she does so with the utmost hilarity and restraint. She has this category sowne up because she gets to show twice as much range as anyone else because ultimately she is playing two different characters- the horrible, selfish old sam and the caring, do gooder new sam.

Tina Fey SHOULD win this one easily...

I think this one should go to Jamie Pressley or Tina Fey.

Oct192007_959_960_lg

Pressley competes in Supporting actress, not lead actress.

Technically she competes in whichever category she decides to enter.

Oct192007_959_960_lg

true, but considering that she has only ever competed in supporting actress and is a supporting actress on her show i'd say she's going to do the same this year.

Does no one ever give love to Mary Louise Parker in weeds???

I might be wrong (it's like 6 am right now....don't ask), but as far as i can remember she maybe has only won a golden globe, right? She's gotten a nom (maybe 2), but her understated AND overlooked performance should bring it home for her this year.

I agree....Christina Applegate shows wonderful comedic timing in her role on Samantha Who. She was wasted for 10 years playing Kelly Bundy. Now she's found a role where she truly shines.

And don't forget her guest spots on Friends, they really introduced us to her comedic skills.

Although I do love Tina Fey, and would be delighted if she won, I really can't argue against Christina Applegate winning an emmy. In Samantha Who, she really cracks me up. Even sometimes just her facial expressions are enough to make me giggle.

I think she's an underappreciated comedic actress.

I would love to see Chi McBride, Blair Underwood or Tichina Arnold, but let's face it....african-american actors aren't really recognized by emmys in the best lead actor/actress categories....1985 was the last time a black actress was nominated for the lead (The Cosby Show) and 2002 was the last time a black actor was nominated (Bernie Mac Show)...winners? there have only been 1 male black actor to win the best lead comedy and that was Benson (Robert G.) in 1985and only one for actress and that was The Jeffersons (Isabel Sanford) in 1981....you want diversity....stay home and watch the Oscars or the SAG awards...
