There are plenty of places a show like The Office can go, so I say bring it on!
Have to disagree with you on that one. An Office spin-off is as bad an idea as Joey was.
Charinator! So Happy to see you again! Now I will *crush* you (said with my best Ivan Drago voice)...
One of the things I love about the Office is that I really feel there are a collection of characters that can each carry episodes and have meaningful story lines. As our two avatars suggest, The Office is not a one trick pony. I can't say that I could imagine what an Office spin off would look like, but there's plenty of places that characters like that could go...
Dem fightin words! Let me show how bad an idea it is through a list of possible spin-offs
1) PBJ move to Wisconsin to open up a bead store and learn that television relationships are always injected w/ too much drama (see Ross & Rachel). Soon the audience loses interest and focuses on all other remaining characters (in this case we're only left with PBJ's talking parrots)
2) Destined to meet future Dwight, current Dwight begins a monk-like existence in the hills of Scranton, shutting himself off to the world completely until he successfully creates a time travel machine. After years of frustrated attempts, current Dwight loses control and goes ninja crazy on unsuspecting local villagers. The now violent and controversial show gets transferred to FOX where it is subsequently canceled
3) Kelly and Ryan get married, have a family, and nobody cares
4) Creed and Kevin start their own band and successfully become the modern Blues Brothers. Creed, unaccustomed to his newfound fame, is found sprawled out on his kitchen counter, having overdosed to a potent amount of mung beans. Afraid of its effect on young viewers, NBC cancels and creates a "TMYK" feature on the benefits of the mung
Wow, charinator, I'm getting handed here. :)
I agree that most of those ideas are largely prone to fail, though I personally think that any pitch meeting including both "Dwight" and "Ninja" is worthy of serious consideration.
I'll admit that I may be wrong, but when I read the words 'Office Spinoff,' what I really think is 'Karen Filippelli Spinoff,' and there ain't nothing wrong with that.
Rashida Jones is going to be a big star someday soon, and if this is the thing that does it, I'm on board.
To be honest, I would welcome a spin-off. But history indicates that spin-offs to a great show rarely ever pan out.
What was the best cop show on TV from 1998 to 2008?

What is so great about the office is the use of the peripheral characters. I love Creed and Kevin, but I love Creed and Kevin in their current roles. To expand them would be a mistake.

The creative team of The Office already has to work on what, 30 episodes for next season? I know that includes some hour long episodes in there, but still. They have a lot of work. Now add on the spin-off. Which, being a midseason replacement (or is it?? NBC's year long line up is bizarre) means that they could have 13 episodes on there hands to create. All this pressure could lead to the main show faltering story wise. And I don't want to see that happen at all. Down with the spin-off.

You can count on one hand the number of successful spin offs. I have a hard time imagining that this is one of them.

Why mess up an already good thing?

I am so darned torn on this issue that I'm just voting in favor of a spinoff so at least someone will. After, we could get lucky and have the Karen Phillipelli show!

I enjoy spinoffs for the most part...after all...my favorite show is a spinoff...love me some Angel

spinoffs are never as good as the originals. the wit and charisma the office gives can't be mimicked in any way.
huzzah 04/04/08
I'm definitely on board for the spinoff. While I'm not expecting it to be on par with the original, I'll keep my hopes up.

When I heard "The Office spinoff" I immediately thought we'd view Scranton from the perspective of the Warehouse guys. Either that, or another Dunder Mifflin branch as seen by the warehouse. To me that's a reasonable jump, different enough from the original, but still maintaining familiarity. If you change too many of the variables, you end up with crap and the audience hates you (see: Joey).

I really can't see this working out... for one thing, it would be pretty hard to set the show in another branch & not reuse a lot of the plots they've already done -- only so many things can happen in an office, even one as crazy as Dunder Mifflin. And much as I liked Karen, I can't really see her being able to anchor her own show.
But what worries me the most about this spin off is that I'm pretty sure no one -- including NBC & the the creative team -- has any idea yet what the premise is going to be, even though I first heard about it 6 months ago. Better think fast guys, your high-profile launch is less than a year away! (I'll actually be pretty surprised if this ever gets to air)
ConfidenceMan 04/08/08
As much as I would love a good spin-off, the phrase I just said is in itself an oxymoron. It's highly unlikely, so I'm not getting my hopes up.
huzzah 04/09/08
I dunno ConMan.
"Buffy" begat "Angel". "All In the Family" begat "Maude" and "The Jeffersons", the former of which begat "Good Times"...
"The Mary Tyler Moore Show" ---> "Rhoda"
"The Daily Show" ---> "The Colbert Report"
"Cheers" ---> "Frasier"
"Happy Days" ---> "Mork & Mindy"
There's plenty more. Some weren't great, some weren't successful, but there are enough successful spin-offs to believe this one has a shot.
