Ben's the bigger and better-looking star. And some may say that Casey is not normally cooler; he just had a great run last year with "The Assassination of Jesse James . . ." and "Gone, Baby, Gone" (which was directed by Ben, which makes it his success as much as Casey's).

However, I think Casey has always had the more interesting career, choosing mostly bigger roles in smaller movies ("Desert Blue," "Lonesome Jim") and smaller roles in bigger movies ("Good Will Hunting," "Ocean's" films).

Plus, though Ben's making smarter choices now, for a long while after "Good Will Hunting," he was in some pretty terrible flicks: "Reindeer Games," "Gigli," and "Surviving Christmas," to name a few.

I hope Ben returns to the level of cool he had in Kevin Smith films like "Mallrats" and "Chasing Amy," and in other movies like "Hunting" and "Shakespeare in Love" (he was hysterical in that). But I don't think he's been there for about a decade now, and I think Casey's always been cool.

casey is a pretty cool guy, but really most of his success, at least until this past year was a direct result of his trading on the affleck name, famous only because of big bad ben.

sure ben has made some crap movie decisions, but his career has been a bit longer than casey's and it's hard to tell if little bro will fall into the same traps. i know my little brother didn't make some of the same mistakes i made because he learned from me.

that said i also didn't star in the train wreck that was gigli.

i think at this point it really does come down to the fact that casey really hasn't been in as many movies as ben, so clearly his choices look better.

at let's just stop and look at real life decisions for a second.

casey=married to summer phoenix who may be the most unfriendly bia--

ben=married to jennifer garner who may be the nicest most real person ever.

at least in real life ben makes some great decisions!

all in all they're both red sox fans so that wins big points in my book!

I disagree about Casey trading in on his name. If that were true, I believe instead of so many thoughtful indies, he would made more big-time popcorn flicks--"Put me in the one where the asteroid is about to hit, and it's up to me to save everyone! I'm an Affleck! I'm a Big Deal." Yes, Matt and Ben definitely had a hand in Casey's being in "Hunting," but other than that, I believe Casey has been determined to carve out a career for himself. He can't help his name is the same as his brother's.

Actually, I think Ben is the one who traded in on a name: the name Oscar. After he and Matt won the screenwriting award for "Hunting," his attitude is the one that seemed to scream, "Put me in the one where the asteroid is about to hit, and it's up to me to save everyone! I'm an Affleck! I'm a Big Deal." Thus, "Armageddon" was born.

I'll say two things in my defense about their personal lives:

1. I am super-excited to see what kind of actor a little Affleck-Phoenix would produce. I think Casey's being married to the sister of River and Joaquin is as cool as it gets!

2. Bennifer.

Well I suppose there is some truth to not trading on the name you can't change but I still say that Casey only learned his lesson by watching his brother get nailed repeatedly for his bad choices. Armageddon was crap, but he can only work with what he's got. There are more films with Ben in them that I'd rather watch than Casey.

Ben: Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Hollywoodland, Smokin Aces (bit of a mess, but a fun movie none the less), Jay and Silent Bob, Boiler Room, School Ties and let's not forget the awesome dee-eye-cee-kay that Ben was in Dazed and Confused.

Casey: Assasination, and Gone Baby Gone. Ocean's 11 was good, 12 was really not good.

Now if you want you can go ahead and list their mis-steps and yeah, Ben will come out on top, but we can really do that with any actor (really name an amazing actor and find me a crappy movie they were in, I'll start Marlon Brando in the Island of Dr Moreau remake). It happens to everyone.

True character is learning your mistakes.

And Summer Phoenix isn't much of an actress so as awesome as the boys are, they can't make little phoenix/affleck actors...

and Bennifer 1 was a disaster, but Bennifer 2 is awesom

Ben and Jen 2 do seem happy, but they do not make up for Ben's two-year stint on JLo's arm, both of them showered with bling. That was decidedly uncool. Both he and Jen 1seem to have learned from that media overload and are more low-key in their current relationships. Perhaps Casey learned from his brother, and that's why he's kept his private life private. Still, I think it's much cooler that I don't know a thing about Casey's marriage. Maybe the media just doesn't care, but Casey's not encouraging any attention.

Plus, though Summer is not well known for her acting, it's gotta be in her genes. River AND Joaquin in one family? Can't be a fluke. I still hope those kids become actors!

As for movie choices, I could name Ben's missteps, but they're well enough known. I've already said that he used to be very cool, so I totally agree with your Kevin Smith and "Dazed and Confused" references.

And Casey's career didn't start with "Assassination." "To Die For" and "Desert Blue" are terrific, and he was the best part of the disappointing "Last Kiss." The great thing about Casey is that, after years of slow and steady, his momentum is just now starting. His best is still to come.

okay, so i've clearly been saving this for my last hurrah if you will:

i'm frakkin jimmy kimmel.

c'mon the guys was downright hilarious. it really honestly did make up for many of his mistakes.

and i really do know that we are talking movies, but casey and summer have long held this reputation for being inaccessible and...well, jerks. now don't jump all over that (not that you would) because maybe they're just very very, to the point of rude, private, but they just aren't that nice. ben and jen are both wonderful people who are out in the community using their fame for something good, and that to me is wonderful.

obviously this is just a personal thing, many people could care less if their favorite star ate small children for breakfast lunch and/or dinner, but as for me, i like to know that the people i watch on tv/in the movies are just like me, perhaps a little bit better looking (but only a little!!! hah) but still i don't know....people....

all that said, i do like both boys as actors, i just like ben a little more!

I like both Affleck brothers so I'm gonna wait for all arguments to vote on this one...good arguments on both sides so far...

May192006_877_lg

Casey just comes across as a better person to me. I loved Virgil in the Ocean's movies, and he was the perfect choice in great character studies like Assassination... or Gone Baby Gone. He may have had his big break this year, and I think he'll soon be bigger than Ben.

Mar142003_700_lg

grr...awesome was clearly that last word, just wanted to clarify that i'm not that bad a speller!!

Mar252005_812d_lg

loglady, I hate it when I re-read one of my arguments and see a typo, too. To point mine out: I couldn't decide between "would have made" and "would make," so it came out "would made." I teach English--it's embarrassing!

Mar142003_700_lg

yeah--i saw one in my first argument also (substituted "at" where i meant to say 'and') and it just makes me crazy...i'm totally that person who sees misspelled things and kinda freaks out! good to know i'm not alone!

Mar252005_812d_lg

As for a great actor in something crappy: Meryl Streep in "Death Becomes Her."

Dec122003_741_lg

I waited on this one because I like both guys...it really was his video with Jimmy Kimmel.

Hehe, just thinking about it makes me giggle!
