The best sitcom set in a radio station was WKRP in Cincinatti.

WKRP was great fun with a wonderful array of characters including:
Les Nesman-nerdy news reporter
Wacky Johnny Fever
Cool & Sexy Venus Flytrap
Selfish Greedy Herb
Home-spun Wise Andy
Gorgeous Loni Anderson
Cute Smart Bailey
Goofy Clueless Gordon Jump as the boss

There were lots of funny situations that included flirting among the staff, jockeying for more air time, banding together to save the station, sneaking back nude photos of Loni (one of my favorite episodes), and many ill conceived stunts/contests aimed at getting more listeners

A good cast and fun writing gave viewers an all around enjoyable show.

News Radio was okay. I only watched to see the late great Phil Hartman. But the cast of that show never seemed to come together as well as WKRP.

Let me start by saying that I work in radio. I host the morning show at 96 Rock in Raleigh, NC. I admit that WKRP was very true to the radio world, but I'm sorry News Radio was ten times funnier.

Sure, no one wore headphones, it was a news station without a producer and Bill and Katherine were apperantly on the air from 9 AM until 6 PM, but the show was great. Stephen Root as Jimmy James was not only a great TV boss, he's just like a lot of the station owners I have run across. He's got a lot of money. Radio clearly was a passion of his at some point, but now he's content to just watch his investment make money.

Andy Dick was not only tolerable, but truly funny as Matthew. Maura Tierney was the perfect know-it-all as Lisa. Phil Hartman stole every scene as jackass Bill McNeill, and Dave Foley brought the wide-eyed idealism that everyone brings with them when they move up in market size as Dave Nelson.

Sure, the show took a hit after Phil Hartman died, but the farewell episode managed to tug at your heart strings and still stay true to the spirit of the show and to the Bill McNeill character. Even the addition of John Lovits as journeyman Max Lewis was good.

News Radio was hysterical. I'm a big Kids in the Hall fan, so I loved Dave Foley as the star of a mainstream show. That in itself was hysterical.

I do have to disagree with demetri on one point--a decision involving putting Jon Lovitz is never good. Just never. I would've preferred if they hadn't brought in a new character when Phil Hartman died.

So...are we gonna finish this?

With props to WKRP (I'll never forget the Turkey episode!), NewsRadio is by far the funniest show about a radio station ever. I would even go so far as to say it is THE funniest comedy of any type. Every episode was golden, every character was unique and every cast member indispensable (with the exception of Lovitz who, through no fault of his own could not hold a candle to his late buddy Phil's performance.) Hartmans death combined with NBC's total mishandling of the show added up to its final demise. But it still has millions of loyal followers as any searching on YouTube will show. Just check out the clip from the 'Smoking" episode if you don't believe me. When you have the likes of...

Phil Harman
Dave Foley
Maura Tierney
Khandi Alexander
Stephen Root
Joe Rogan
Andy Dick
Vicki Lewis

You can't miss.

News Radio was classic. Radio station shows or any other show, NR was loads of fun to watch

LOL, sounds like you are describing the eight dwarves there! We have nerdy, wacky, cool (last name sexy), selfish, wise, gorgeous, cute and goofy. NewsRadio was an ENSEMBLE that fit together like a wonderful puzzle. WKRP while definitely being groundbreaking was not realistic, at least to me. NR was HYSTERICAL and probably the only show that ever made me leave the room I was laughing that hard (and I am a tough critic1) AND they did it consistently, week after week.

"Bill: Is Matthew superior to me?
Dave: Do you mean genetically?
Bill: No, I mean in this office.
Dave: No.
Bill: Good. How about genetically?
Dave: Well he is ambidextrous.
Bill: Freak!"

LOL!!!

"Mr. James: "I've got so many lawyers standing in line to see me now you'd think I have tobacco leaking out of my breast implants."

LMAO!! Sorry, I am on a roll now.....

OMG the memories! Now you got me surfing for quotes! Remember the episode with the security door????

"
"Matthew Brock: Dave, we have to get rid of that door.
Dave Nelson: No, we don't.
Matthew Brock: Yes, we do. A bird just died flying into it.
Dave Nelson: Really?
[They go look]
Matthew Brock: See? There it is.
Dave Nelson: Matthew, that's a Cornish game hen.
Matthew Brock: The poor thing.
Dave Nelson: You didn't even bother to defrost it."

"The original title of this book was 'Jimmy James, Capitalist Lion Tamer' but I see now that it's... 'Jimmy James, Macho Business Donkey Wrestler'... you know what it is... I had the book translated in to Japanese then back in again into English. Macho Business Donkey Wrestler... well there you go... it's got kind of a ring to it don't it? Anyway, I wanted to read from chapter three... which is the story of my first rise to financial prominence... I had a small house of brokerage on Wall Street... many days no business come to my hut... my hut... but Jimmy has fear? A thousand times no. I never doubted myself for a minute for I knew that my monkey strong bowels were girded with strength like the loins of a dragon ribboned with fat and the opulence of buffalo... dung.
...Glorious sunset of my heart was fading. Soon the super karate monkey death car would park in my space. But Jimmy has fancy plans... and pants to match. The monkey clown horrible karate round and yummy like cute small baby chick would beat the donkey.

Question: Mr. James, what did you mean when you wrote bad clown making like super American car racers, I would make them sweat, War War?
Answer: Well, you know... it's LIKE when a clown is making like a car... racer... it's sorta... like... the FCC. The CLOWN... the clown is like the FCC... and I was opposed to the FCC at the time, right? So it was like I was declaring War. WARRRR!.
Question: So then did the American yum yum clown monkey also represent the FCC?
Answer: Yeah, it did. Thanks a LOT!
Question: What did you mean when you said, "feel my skills, donkey donkey donkey donkey donkey?
Answer: (Sigh)
-SUPER KARATE MONKEY DEATH CAR :-)

Ok, ok this is the last one....

"Dave: "Alright, I take the complaint box very seriously and I seem to be the only one who does."
Bill: "A complaint about the complaint box... delicious."
Dave: "Bill, I'm serious. I am not amused, alright. I happen to be the one who has to deal with all these complaints no matter how stupid they are."
Beth: "Well Dave, how stupid could they be?"
Dave: "Well, let's have a look here... You Suck... You Suck... Howard Stern Rules... If you can read this you are a dork... Coupon for one free kiss from Joe if you are a girl... Need more complaint cards... Coupon for one free kiss from Joe if you are a GUY... You will go on a journey happy long time [fortune cookie]... Matthew is a moron... no I'm not... yes you are... no I'm not infinity... yes you are infinity plus one... and this one... I have doobie in my funk (which I assume is from some reference to the Parliament Funkadelic's song Chocolate City... You got peanut butter in my chocolate... you got chocolate in my peanut butter... together they taste like crap... Matthew has been staring at me all day - - - and I love it... and this one says, "I try to be good hard worker man... but refidgamator so messy - so so messy..."
Lisa: "I think that ones probably from the um... janitor."
Dave: "Ohhh, oh then that one's legitemate.... uhhh, who's the black private dick the sex machine with all the chicks?..
Staff: "SHAFT!!"
Bill: "I thought we'd all enjoy that one."
Dave: "and... Help, I'm being held prisoner in in a complaint box."
-COMPLAINT BOX"

LOL! Refridgamator.

grew up with a father who worked in radio for 17 years. i agree that WKRP is one of the truest portrtayls of radio on television. News radio also did a serviceable job. that being said i would have to say that WKRP is by far one of the best shows of all time!!!!!!
oh yeah and Booger

Oct12004_786_lg

Oh man oh man, I remember the episode where Bill used the word **** repeatedly just to piss off NBC. I don't remember the actual **** count but it was well above average (what is the average **** count in a sitcom anyway?) I have the original somewhere. But I digress....

NewsRadio was basically the Mary Tyler Moore show in a radio station. You had Ted/Bill, Mr. Grant/Dave, Mary/Maura + Beth, Sue Ellen/Catherine, Murray/Joe and....ummm.....Mr. James who probably could be said to have been Mr. Grant meets Chuckles the clown. If Phil was still alive the show would have had a long and huge run. Even Seinfeld who at the time reigned understood how good the show was when he decided to make a guest appearance to help boost the ratings amidst NBC's screwups. Now if Jerry knew it was worth saving, hell who are we to argue?!

Cast my vote in the NR ring and jumping on the NR quoting bandwagon....

"It's like my father used to say... when I was a child, I thought as a child and spoke as a child... and when I became a man, I took that child out back and had him shot." - Bill McNeal

Oct12004_786_lg

Whoops I guess the powers that be don't like that word either! Anybody in the mood for pea nuts? hehe

Apr182008_987_lg

Nope. I've got two words: FREE RADIO!

Mar022007_923_lg

Free Radio is pretty funny too. I like that show.

Apr152005_815_lg

What about Fraiser? Kelsey Grammer turned his popularity from Cheers into a highly successful show.
WKRP is in a class all by itself. That's HISTORY!!!

Oct192007_959_960_lg

Newsradio or Frasier would be my choices by far.

Oct82004_787_lg

News Radio forever!!!!
