The Office has lost so much of its momentum this season. There have been the few exceptions, including, in my opinion, The Deposition and Branch Wars, but overall the writing has been sub-par. I'm not sure if its the amount of focus on relationship troubles, or the diving into Michael Scott's tragic psyche, but something about these episodes are extremely lacking.

Are you kidding? The only thing lacking this season was the number of quality episodes due to a completely worthless writer's strike. The Office has hit it's stride in it's 4th season. For me, this season has been one of the best, if not the best!, of the series thus far. "Fun Run", "Money", "Local Ad", "Branch Wars", "The Deposition" and "Dinner Party" are nothing less than series classics! And the show has only benefited from Jim and Pam FINALLY getting together. They ARE the perfect couple! Plus, I have to admit, the exit of Rashida Jones has been a big factor in the greatness that is Season 4. Karen was totally un-necessary from the beginning and was not a very likeable character. I am so glad that she is gone! Ding-**** the witch is dead! I hated seeing her for even one second in "Branch Wars", but I did LOVE Jim's awkward interaction with her. Plus, the Michael/Jan relationship collapse story is downright HILARIOUS! Yep, I have to say that I am really glad that The Office is FINALLY back to bless us with more episodes from one of it's funniest seasons ever!

Yes, The Office still reigns supreme over most of the sitcoms on t.v. today. But, considering the present season, that says a lot about the programs that are on t.v. And I don't think that blaming the WGA strike is a good enough argument against the lack of quality writing that has been seen in season's past. I'll agree with you on the Rashida Jones factor, i couldn't stand her character as well. But the Michael and Jan relationship is just terribly depressing now. It went from funny-disfunctional to suicidal levels. There has atleast been one funny moment in each episode, which is good, but not consistent. A good season of a show should be judged on consistency. This season just doesn't have it.

I STILL have to disagree with you on this. The show has NOT lost it's quality or it's consistency. This season has featured some of the best moments of the series. The scene where Jim comforts a heartbroken Dwight in the hallway and then immediately kisses Pam is done so beautifully! The acting, the writing, everything was perfect in that moment..."Jim is VERY passionate about Italian food." ..."Actually I'm in LOVE with Italian food!" CLASSIC moment! Plus, you can't tell me that Jim and Pam staying at Schrute farms was NOT comedy gold! and who didn't get a kick out of seeing Dwight and Moes playing ping pong at lightning speed! This week's episode, "Parking" is yet another example of proof that the series has NOT lost "it" in Season 4. Michael's awkward blind date, Jim LITERALLY showing us the ring! Then faux proposing to Pam at the end! My heart stopped! Plus Kevin and Andy Vs. The Five Families just to get their parking spaces back! OMG this year has been funny! and JUST as funny if not MORE so than the other seasons! How many more reasons do you need to finally realize how good Season 4 is?

I may be fighting a losing battle, but your counterargument is full of tiny, funny moments within episodes. Remember the times when whole episodes were funny? I'm not disagreeing with you on the funny parts you mentioned - i completely agree, in fact. And i'm not saying that a fair amount of the episodes in this season weren't funny, because a good amount have been. But by comparing this season to seasons past, it simply pales in comparison. The writers still know how to keep us viewers on edge (i.e. Pam and Jim), and deliver funny lines (most of the ones you mentioned), but it feels as though they're at the end of the toothpaste tube. They are squeezing out the last bits that they have until cancellation. Hopefully they buy a new tube next season, or atleast before this season ends. I have always had high hopes for The Office, and still do. I've enjoyed the season, just not as much as the previous 3.

I don't mean to sound cold, I really don't, but maybe you are right and you are fighting a losing battle here. I mean 20 votes in my favor so far and 7 votes in your favor...well, that pretty much sums it up: People DO REALLY like this season of The Office! It's not just me! People still enjoy the quality of this show very much, which means it is NOT the worst season of the series thus far. And as far as this throwdown goes, I only have one final thing left to say...I will leave you with a great quote from Kevin: "It's just nice to win one!"

Yeah, it hasn't been as funny this season and those hour-long episodes were a drag. I feel the 4th season is moving more towards being a dramedy than an actual comedy.

Apparently not.

The fourth season has had its far share of hilarious moments and other moments worthy of the other seasons, but it just doesn't match up.

Oct52007_957d_lg

It's not really fair to judge this season because of the strike. Sure it hasn't been as funny, but it's still one of the best shows on TV right now.

ya i dont love season 4 but its ok i kindda stoped watchin

Oct52007_957_lg

It is certainly one of the best shows on tv right now. The acting, writing and producing are top notch. I think all other seasons will pale in comparison to season 2 just because that was the season where everyone (fans, critics etc.) stood up and took notice to how genius this show was and how it became original on its own and still managed to stay true to the British version.

Oct52007_957_lg

Jim and Pam together is far less interesting than I expected

Apr152005_815_lg

I agree that Season 4 is the weakest season of The Office, but it is still better than practically every other sitcom. I think where they're having trouble is in continuing to come up with semi-plausible office-related plots, & so are losing focus a bit, with episodes based on Jim & Pam going to Dwight's beet farm or Jan & Michael's dinner party.

Apr182008_987_lg

The thing that makes season 4 so weak is the constant departures from the actual Dunder Mifflin office building (which is a slippery slope that really started last season, but whatever). I want to see the whole cast and know what they're doing at work-that's why it's The Office, not The Personal Lives of People Who Work at Dunder Mifflin. Maybe they're just running out of ideas, I don't know.

Did you folks not even SEE this week's episode? Mindy is a GENIUS! Hobbits? Jim's Blunder? DWIGHT SCORES? Come on. The genius of this season is the fact that we are now finally OUT of the office on occasion - it makes the sitations the occur in the office that much more unbearable and stifling because we have seen the characters in the fresh air AND THEY ARE EVEN MORE CRAZY OUT THERE!

Watching Toby fondle Pam, stammer about Costa Rica and then hop the fence was the greatest moment so far this season - it even eclipsed the false proposal with PB&J...if that is possible. My only gripe is poor Michael - get the man laid, already...its getting pitiful...

Oct52007_957_lg

My only complaint for season 4 was the number of hour long episodes. "Fun Run" might just be one of the funniest episodes ever, but I didn't find the rest of the hour long eps this season to be as consistently funny. All offer some classic moments, but stretching jokes out for an hour doesn't always work.
